Mvemjsunpx wrote:Despite their surprising loss to NAU tonight, today's other results still clinched them home court advantage. North Dakota & Montana are the only two left that can still tie the Wildcats. NoDak can't win the tiebreaker, however, because Weber swept them. Montana is also out because they would need Sac to finish ahead of NoDak & NoCo to win the common games tiebreaker. That means UM would need Sac to win out, but Sac plays Montana so…
Too bad we need other teams to win us home court in the tourney
SAC 67-80 ISU; Dylan Garrity went 8/16 from the arc, but it wasn't nearly enough NAU 73-71 WEB (OT); Quinton Upshur's OT dagger couldn't quite prevent Weber from clinching the title
SUU 54-82 UMT; Jamar shoots 71% and puts up 25 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals, and 0 turnovers PSU 77-68 UNC; NoCo is shooting 23.5% from the arc in their last 3 games (all losses)
EWU 67-69 UND; Eagles lose at the last second despite double-doubles from both Seiferth & Jois
Women
UND 61-57 EWU; Eastern takes a 57-54 lead with 3:22 to go and doesn't score again
UNC 51-57 PSU; Kate Lanz gets a double-double plus 3 steals and 3 assists in her final home game
ISU 53-56 SAC; Sac's previous season low for points scored in a win was 74
MSU 60-70 SUU; The last two seasons, Montana State is 5-17 after January 24th. WEB 74-73 NAU; Weber overcomes a 13-point deficit to end their 54-game road losing streak
Despite the loss, Weber did clinch the regular-season title as mentioned above. North Dakota also clinched a tournament berth because they can't lose a 4-way tie for 5th. with EWU, PSU, and the MSU/Sac winner.
The NoDak women all but clinched home court with their win today. The only way SUU hosts is if they beat UND & UNC, Sac wins out, and EWU loses out (UND swept EWU, SUU swept Sac, EWU swept Sac). Sac State also clinched a tournament berth from their win & NoCo's loss. NAU is still technically alive, but they need a pretty decent miracle to get in: they need to win out, they need MSU & NoCo lose out, and they need SUU to win the title.
Things couldn't have gone any worse for us yesterday. Now we need MSU to lose out so that the final spot showdown is between us and them next Saturday.

Griz pull one out of the fire tonight....opened up a comfortable 12 point lead 6 minutes into the second half, then held on for a 53-50 win. UGLY UGLY UGLY.

Not sure how it works when they split with UND during the season, so root for UND to lose to UNC on Thursday.
Griz will get the #2 in that scenario because they beat Weber once & NoDak did not. There isn't really any substantive difference between #2 & #3 in the tournament bracket though.

Aren't there any 1st round byes in the tourney?

Only the 1 seed gets a bye, the other 6 teams play in the 1st round.
Are all rounds in Ogden? Or just the 2nd and beyond?
And thanks for the win Griz, we needed that badly.

All rounds in Ogden. They ditched the home QF games with the format change last year. It's looking like the Sac/MSU game will be a win-or-go-home contest, especially if UM wins in Sacto Thursday. My prediction is that the teams left out (other than Suutah) will be ISU, MSU, and EWU. NoCo could actually find themselves left out if they're not careful, though.
What I'd like to see next year with 12 teams is an 8-team tournament with a double bye format (#s 3 & 4 get one bye, #s 1 & 2 get two byes). Regular-season champ would still host.
Tonight's Griz/Cat contests didn't really resolve much. MSU's men fell firmly into the clusterfuck over the last tournament spot and they appear to be in dire straits with two road games left. The Montana men, meanwhile, weren't quite able to clinch a tourney spot because there's still at least one convoluted scenario that would leave them out.
The Lady Griz retained sole possession of third with their win, while the Bobcats remain on the bubble. NoCo would have to win in Cedar City to prevent MSU from making the tournament, though, so MSU's freefall likely won't cost them a berth even if they get swept at home.
Tonight's win by NoDak means Montana will likely need to sweep on the road to get the #2 seed, though there isn't really any meaningful difference between 2nd. & 3rd. in the tournament format. The Griz could fall a bit lower if they lose a game, though.
Could NoCo lose to Southern Utah? I doubt it, mainly because Suutah hasn't been as competitive lately as they were in the middle of conference, but UNC's recent struggles make this outcome at least plausible. If that happens, we may see the early leaders do the unthinkable & miss the tourney entirely.

I like that. Any idea if the BSC is considering this?

I have no idea if the Big Sky has even considered anything for the tourney next year. It appears the regular season will be 18 games with 6 regional pairs (EWU/ID, PSU/SAC, UMT/MSU, UNC/UND, ISU/WEB, NAU/SUU), but I haven't heard anything about the tournament.
Big road game tonight for the Griz and possibly a bigger game for MSU @ NAU as MSU is playing for their playoff lives right now.

And I'm stuck in meetings tonight and will miss all of the action tonight.
No. No you won't. You will have a live feed up on your computer with an earbud in so you don't miss any of the action.
Who schedules meetings at night anyways?
If you want, I can send you text updates every 5 minutes

Despite a convincing loss in Cedar City, the FormerSioux officially clinched home court due to Montana's win over Sac State in Missoula. SUU needed Sac to finish ahead of EWU, which is now impossible. If SUU gets an expected win over reeling NoCo Saturday, though, it will be a shared title—that opens up a greater possibility of shared awards.
