Youngstown State @ #3 Southern Illinois
Youngstown State 4-2 (2-1)
@ Southern Illinois 5-1 (4-0) [Likely to be ranked #2 or #3 come Monday]
Saturday | 4pm/et
Could someone update the title to reflect the rankings come Monday
SIU is coming off an E-N-O-R-M-O-U-S upset at the UNI Dome over Northern Iowa, winning by the final score of 27-20. SIU scored two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter to defeat the previous #2 Northern Iowa Panthers.
HISTORY
YSU is just 3-5 against Southern Illinois in the Heacock era [Wins in 01-02-06]
In 2001, YSU won @ SIU 31-7.
In 2003, YSU lost @ #3 SIU 24-17
In 2005, #15 YSU lost @ #5 SIU 31-17.
In 2007, #10 YSU lost @ #6 SIU 24-17.
-History shows that YSU has been in every game, at least through 3 quarters, against Top 10 Saluki teams at McAndrew Stadium.
-In 2006, YSU beat a #1/#2 Illinois State team on the road 27-13, so it is not out of the realm of possibilities to win in a hostile environment.
KEYS TO a YSU Upset:
Penguin's do everything right.
Saluki's turn the ball over.
Play like we did in the 1st half vs. WIU.
THOUGHTS?
[Edit: I had the YSU vs. SIU record wrong, we ended up winning in 2001 and 2002.]

SIU's victory over UNI was not an upset.

I think any time you go into a highly ranked teams home stadium and win, it's somewhat of an upset. Don't get your panties in a bunch, old man.houndawg wrote:SIU's victory over UNI was not an upset.

Can both teams lose..? That's how excited I am....

You had lost 11 in a row at the pUNI Dome, therefore it is an upset in my eyes.houndawg wrote:SIU's victory over UNI was not an upset.

Don't kid yourself. Beating the 2nd ranked, 14 time conference champ in a building that you haven't won at in over 25 years IS an upset.houndawg wrote:SIU's victory over UNI was not an upset.

Coach Chuck did seem a bit upset after the game. Does that count?

Back to the original topic.
I'm sure the Penguins will be highly motivated heading into Carbondale. They know a win here would shoot them into the rankings. I just don't think they have the hosses to hang with the Dawgs. They won't be able to slow down Karim. I expect the Penguin QB to be both sacked and picked. It will be a long day for the flightless birds.

There are two reasons why I think YSU can pull the upset:skinny_uncle wrote:Back to the original topic.

1) Our Quarterback Brandon Summers. Last year, SIU did not face Summers who was out with an injury. The kid has shown signs of brilliance at YSU when he does not force his passes.
2) The YSU Defense. Since the Pitt Game: 14 vs. Austin Peay, 14 vs. Northeastern, 0 vs. Indiana State, 17 vs. Missouri State, and 21 vs. Western Illinois... For an average of: 13 ppg.
If the YSU Defense can hold SIU to 24 or less points, YSU has a chance.
And listen, the history of the past three meetings in Carbondale tells the story. SIU was tied with or had a 1 touchdown lead going into the 4th quarter, where they eventually won. If YSU can keep it within a possession into the 4th quarter, they could pull the upset.
And remember... YSU Head Coach Jon Heacock is fighting to keep his job. A win and he survives another week. A loss and he may as well end up begin packing his bags.

Except that nobody but Marshall has scored more than 23 on us. Even UNI only had 20 and they averaged over 40 ppg. Maybe next year.guinzone wrote:There are two reasons why I think YSU can pull the upset:skinny_uncle wrote:Back to the original topic.

We'll see come Saturday. I expect some new offensive looks on the field, such as running qb Dailyn Campbell coming in on short yardage situations, perhaps some option plays, and of course the occassional trick play.houndawg wrote:Except that nobody but Marshall has scored more than 23 on us. That isn't new, you tried that in '07 with Ferlando Williams. Your biggest plus is that we'll likely be a little flat after UNI.guinzone wrote:We'll see come Saturday. Re: Youngstown State @ Southern Illinois
Williams was a wide receiver. He was 6 foot 195 pounds.
Campbell is a quarterback. He is 6'1 foot and 215 pounds, although he looks a lot bigger.
And it is worth noting, Summers is a mobile QB, but our coaching staff has not let him run the ball because he if were to get injured, we would be 'screwed'.
It will be interesting to see if they let him loose for the first time all season. His mobility was a huge reason we beat #2 NDSU last year, even though they turned out to suck come years end.

I think a large reason you beat NDSU was they sucked balls.guinzone wrote: It will be interesting to see if they let him loose for the first time all season. His mobility was a huge reason we beat #2 NDSU last year, even though they turned out to suck come years end.
