Best Performance: (#3) Eastern Washington 42, (#14) Cal Poly 21 - Superior special teams play and a 3-1 turnover advantage give the Eagles a surprisingly sweat-less win in SLO.

Most Surprising Result: Portland St. 51, UC Davis 29 - The Vikings throw for 425 yards on just 21 attempts, their highest passing-yardage total since Jerry Glanville was the coach in 2008.

Worst Performance: Indiana St. 6, Northern Iowa 39 - Not only were the Sycamores outrushed badly, their normally potent passing game threw for just 113 yards on 31 attempts.

Most Surprising Result: Illinois St. 31, (#12) Western Illinois 26 - Their preseason expectations were unfair due to how much they lost in the offseason, but the Redbirds have finally been living up to them the last couple weeks.

Just my opinion but I think the best Southland performance was by Central Arkansas. Sam Houston State got a lot of yards passing but McNeese has a bad pass defense. Everything else was weak for Sam Houston State. They ran out to a 28-3 lead then allowed McNeese to come back to close enough to have a chance to win at 49-43 with just under 7 minutes left in the game. They got 28 first downs and 630 yards but McNeese got 28 first downs and 574 yards. It was McNeese's top offensive output of the season. Sam Houston State could not run the ball effectively. And even though McNeese has had problems running the ball this season they were able to notch 217 yards at 6.6 yards a pop vs. the BearKats. Sam Houston struggled with McNeese playing at home even though they didn't turn the ball over and had only 2 penalties for 20 yards.

Central Arkansas won by 20 points on the road in spite of committing 6 turnovers and having 12 penalties for 126 yards. They held SFA to 59 yards rushing at 1.9 yards per carry. There was no 4th quarter drama. No real indication that SFA had any shot late as McNeese did vs. Sam Houston State.

Yes, I know you could say that making that many mistakes...6 turnovers and 12 penalties for 126 yards...is not impressive. But they won by 20 points on the road while doing that while Sam Houston State had McNeese within 6 points of it with 7 minutes left while committing zero turnovers and only two penalties. I'm just a lot more impressed by what Central Arkansas did. You dominate like that even with all those mistakes and that's impressive.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
