NDSU to host Chuck South in FCS Kickoff Game

Post by dbackjon »

As if North Dakota State and Charleston Southern weren't playing enough tough competition at the beginning of the 2016 season, they've added yet another rugged matchup - against each other.

The FCS powers will get the subdivision's football season underway by facing off in the third annual FCS Kickoff on Aug. 27 at the Fargodome. The start time for the spotlight game on ESPN is 7:30 p.m. ET.

Missouri Valley Football Conference power North Dakota State has won a record five straight FCS national championships. Charleston Southern exploded onto the national scene last season, winning the Big South title and reaching the playoff quarterfinals.

Both teams will return veteran cores, especially within their run game and defense. The Bison are 71-5 over the last five years, including 13-2 last season under coach Chris Klieman. Charleston Southern, which is 28-10 in three seasons under coach Jamey Chadwell - only five of those losses are against FCS opponents - went 10-3 and finished sixth in the final STATS FCS Top 25 last season.

That's what they said when we scheduled App State in 2013. That's what they said when we played Citadel in 13...14...15...15 again in playoffs. That's what they said when we hosted #1 Coastal Carolina last year.

NDSU will probably win. Probably.....

But NO ONE in FCS does more with less than the swashbucklers at CSU. Don't write us off so easily. Especially with NDSU losing their QB who is possibly a top 10 NFL pick...maybe 1st QB taken. He's gonna leave a huge void.

Ah....fuck it....it's March.....YOU'RE GOING DOWN NDSU!!! BRING IT ON!!! WE'RE GONNA SHUT THE FARGO DOME DOWN!!!!

The QB doesn't matter. They will just run the hell out of the ball.

CSUs DL averages 260 lbs

LBs average 214

They run a 3-3-5 defense with that size

Imagine the NDSU run game against that front.

Rumor on the JMU board is ESPN wanted it JMU @ NDSU. It was gonna happen but NDSU didn't want to give a return game (I'm assuming JMU didn't want to do a one and done). 2 pretty reputable posters claiming that from a "source" in the AD dept.

True it's gonna be tough. But CSU D is very strong against the run. The Citadel in 2015 was one of the best running teams in all of FCS....shredded an SEC defense. CSU completely dominated their run game.

I'm a CSU fanatic but being realistic....NDSU should win this game by 10-14 points. We are a legit top 25 team but NDSU is 5x champ for a reason.

If this is at all true and NDSU didn't want to do a H-H (JMU is perfect option for a H-H), then NDSU is going to find it tough pickings to find any program that wants to schedule a game with them.

NDSU is a fuck of a lot better than 14 points better than CSU.

Here's a list of teams that have played in Fargo and lost by less than 14, or won
2015:
South Dakota won by 3 in one of the biggest FCS upsets maybe ever
UNI lost by 3

2014:
#3 Coastal Carolina lost by 7 in the quarters - second time playing in the dome...beaten the year before by 34 in the dome
#10 South Dakota State lost by 3...one of the biggest FCS rivalries there is. SDSU plays in the dome every other year. Lost 4 weeks earlier in the dome by 20
Montana lost by 22 in the dome that season

2013:
UNI lost by 1

2012:
#3 Georgia Southern lost by 3 in the semis. Their second trip to the dome in the playoffs in 2 years. Lost in the semis by 28 in Fargo year before
#5 Wofford lost by 7 in the quarters
South Dakota State lost by 3...see earlier note about SDSU...they were also a 2nd round playoff team that year
Indiana State won by 3...see note about USD upset...

Noticing a trend here? It's all MVFC teams that play there frequently or top 5 teams that have played there real recently.

Teams stepping into the FargoDome for the first time since 2010? Well...
NDSU 35 Morgan St. (MD) 9
NDSU 43 Robert Morris (PA) 17 Division I-AA 1st Round Playoff Game
NDSU 42 Lafayette (PA) 6
NDSU 56 Saint Francis (PA) 3
NDSU 26 James Madison (VA) 14 Division I-AA 2nd Round Playoff Game
NDSU 24 Lehigh (PA) 0 Division I-AA Quarterfinal Playoff Game
NDSU 35 Georgia Southern 7 Division I-AA Semifinal Playoff Game
NDSU 52 Robert Morris (PA) 0
NDSU 66 Prairie View A&M (TX) 7
NDSU 56 Ferris St. (MI) 10
NDSU 51 Delaware St. 0
NDSU 38 Furman (SC) 7 Division I-AA 2nd Round Playoff Game
NDSU 48 Coastal Carolina (SC) 14 Division I-AA Quarterfinal Playoff Game
NDSU 52 New Hampshire 14 Division I-AA Semifinal Playoff Game
NDSU 58 Incarnate Word (TX) 0 Gale City Bank Field
NDSU 22 Montana 10 Fargo Dome
NDSU 35 Sam Houston St. (TX) 3 Division I-AA Semifinal Playoff Game - Keep in mind SHSU played NDSU in 2011 and 2012
NDSU 41 Weber St. (UT) 14
NDSU 34 North Dakota 9 First time in a D1 game
NDSU 37 Montana 6 Division I-AA 2nd Round Playoff Game - second time playing NDSU that year and 2nd trip to Fargo in 2 years
NDSU 37 Montana 6 Division I-AA 2nd Round Playoff Game

That's MOVs of 26, 26, 36, 53, 12, 24, 28, 52, 59, 46, 51, 31, 34, 38, 58, 12, 32, 27, 25, 31, 31...yep...won more games by 55+ than by less than 25. NDSU hasn't lost a home OOC game since 2002...hadn't even started their D1 transition.

They lost Wentz. Yep. Easton Stick played more than Wentz last year....had better numbers too. Oh, that defense returns 8 starters.

Walking into the FargoDome for the FCS Kickoff event on ESPN, on another banner raising day, with that lack of size? Holy shit it'll get ugly quick.

CSU has no idea what it's in for.

The only team to consistently play NDSU close is UNI. UNI is one of about 2 or 3 teams in the country that can match NDSU's size/strength. I believe UNI is the only team to beat NSDSU more than twice since they moved D1 - UNI is at 4

NDSU doesn't want to go on the road. You couldn't pay them enough to make up their lost revenue for a home game.

It's tough for them to schedule in general. They've gotten too good to schedule, add in the demands they'll put in and it'll be tough.

Last year they were willing to go with 11 in a 12 game year and this year they were willing to ride 10 in an 11

Hey to be the best you have to beat the best. I applaud CSU for scheduling the toughest team in the FCS right out of the gate. Might be a little better game that most of you think.

No one expected the Griz opener against them to be close. Of course playing the FD is an entirely different animal.

They are willing to schedule one game less in the regular season because they expect the will play an additional 4 games after the regular season like they have the last 5 years.

Wentz's efficiency rating was better than Stick's, plus Wentz had way more pass attempts per game. Stick may end being pretty good, but he isn't Wentz and likely won't ever be Wentz.

Remember, Stick was a freshman last year

His numbers in 11 games he saw action in

Passing
90-147 (61%)
1,144 yards
13 TD
4 INT

Rushing
85 attempts
498 yards
5.9 YPC
5 TD Long
60 yards

That includes NDSU completely taking the ball out of the air for 2 plus quarters against Indiana State, WIU, MSU, Montana, and Richmond due to the score

Is he going to be a top 10 pick like Wentz? Likely not. The reality is Stick is real fucking good. It came down to UNI and NDSU for landing him. The two have a lot of recruiting battles and typically landing one or losing one isn't a "huge deal". Losing him to NDSU was a big deal that hurt.

Also, remember when everyone said "Yeah, Wentz might look good, but he isn't Jensen and likely won't ever be Jensen"?

Jensen almost never lost as a starter. Jensen had a football IQ nearly unseen at the FCS level. Jensen didn't have the physical gifts that Wentz does, but he was every bit the mental guru.

People didn't think Wentz could match that. Thought he was talented but Brock's ability to diagnose, audible, check down, etc... Was thought to be unmatchable for Wentz.

We can say Wentz won't be matched by Stick in terms of physical freakishness, but dude is a baller.

If anyone is counting on beating NDSU because they don't have Wentz next year I'd call them a moran to their face. They didn't lose with him at QB this year. I think he was 8-0

Well, NDSU's defense was a big reason Jensen almost never lost as a starter, but anyway… Starting record for a QB is overrated. John Edwards almost never lost a game for Montana, but I don't even think he should be in the top-10 among Griz quarterbacks all-time.

I'm not suggesting CSU will beat NDSU, especially since they're going with a new coach, but I don't think it's anywhere near hopeless. They aren't Delaware State.

The schedules may not have worked out for NDSU and JMU for the home and home to work. NDSU just finished a home and home with Montana and Weber St. They are currently doing home and home with EWU. Bison have a road game with EWU next year.

Is there some reason to believe football IQs at the FCS level are different than those at other levels?
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

North Dakota State and Weber State just ended a home and home that even started in Ogden, and it's not like Weber is just crawling in money. I have a hard time finding that statement to be true. If anything North Dakota State has proven to me they are willing to play anybody in any stadium.

There have been times I had wanted Weber to schedule the Grizzlies or Bobcats when they didn't play each other in conference that year, but I don't know if there has been any communication between Weber and the Montana's, I always figured Montana and Montana State could make more money playing an OOC home game than playing and OOC road game at Weber. Which I'm sure would be a huge factor.

I do know that the AD at Weber and the AD at Sacramento State are friends and that may be why Weber and Sacramento State have continued to play each other despite 4 years in a row not playing each other in conference, which is fine with me since it continues to build on the rivalry that has kind of spawned between the two schools, and it may just continue in other seasons the Cats and Hornets don't play each other in conference play.
