NAU players prepare for Pro Day

Post by dbackjon »

03/18/2009) TEMPE, Ariz. – Northern Arizona senior football players K.J. Gerard and Robbie Dehaze will participate in the Pro Day at Arizona State University on Friday, March 20. It will be a prime opportunity to showcase their skills for a host of NFL scouts and coaches scheduled to attend the event.
“I am pretty pumped to see how I do,” said Gerard who has been training at St. Vincent Sports Performance in Indiana. “I worked on all my training drills to prepare for the combine drills.”

Gerard was able to put on 20 pounds and improve his 40-yard dash time during his training.

“I am pretty confident,” said Gerard. “I have been training for this for a long time.”

Gerard, a native of Fountain Valley, Calif., was a two-time All-America selection at NAU. He holds the NAU school record for interceptions with 19, tied for the fifth-best total in Big Sky history, and finished his career ranked tied for first in interceptions among active career leaders in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and Division I overall. He was a Buck Buchanan Award Finalist List for the best defensive player at the FCS level in 2008, finishing the season with 47 tackles and a five interceptions.

Dehaze, who hails from Sherwood, Ore., has been working just as hard to make sure he impresses the scouts, spending his time kicking three days a week to keep his leg in shape. Specialists do not participate in the drills associated with the professional combine so Dehaze is just worried about his kicking.

A versatile kicker who could potentially punt, kick field goals or kickoff for an NFL team, he just wants to do what the scouts want to see.

“I will do whatever the scouts want me to do,” said Dehaze, who signed with the agent for former Montana kicker Dan Carpenter. “I just want to have a shot in a camp.”

Carpenter was a free agent signee of the Miami Dolphins last year and made the roster, replacing the veteran on the roster.

Dehaze was named a first-team All-American by the AFCA at kicker and Walter Camp Foundation at punter in 2008. He made 56-for-74 field goal attempts (75.7 percent), finishing his career with a school-best 56 career field goals, the sixth-best total in Big Sky history and tied for 16th in NCAA history. He was among the national leaders in punting at 45.1 yards per punt.
