San Diego drops NAU game, schedules San Diego State

Post by dbackjon »

Fuck the Toreros - they took money from SDSU to play them instead of NAU.

SDSU was looking for a game to replace the cancelled UAB game.

Why is SDSU playing a non-scholarship team? They seriously couldn't find a single, full-schollie, bowl-counting FCS team to play? My only guess is that, since they play 13 games (Hawai'i rule), they basically had to go 7-6 to get a bowl anyway. :?

Hahah! You got Furmaned!!!

Well maybe not a true Furman, which involves hosting the first game of a home and home and then bailing.

I'm not sure I see how this profits U of SD. Sure, there's the payout. But there's more to scheduling than that. Given what NAU did last year, that game COULD have been seen as raising RPI (or whatever they're calling it these days) over what the Pioneer would generally get, while maintaining a semi-reasonable shot at a win. While I'm not a guy who thinks that every FCS-FBS game is an auto-loss for the FCS team, in THIS case, it probably is barring a ton of Aztec injuries.

Given the scarce nature of Pioneer at large bids, I think U of SD just scheduled themselves out of the playoffs. Dumb....

Has USD ever played SDSU? Seems like it would be a game with a lot of local interest. I mean, if SDSU picked up Dayton or Drake or some other non-scholly then that would be silly, but at least this game has a little bit of local flavor.

The Pioneer is a one-bid league. They MIGHT have been able to change that (see Liberty/CCU in 2014) by beating NAU. (Again, that's only a POSSIBILITY; they're nowhere near a lock to beat NAU). But there's no way in heck they're going to beat SD State. The ONLY way U of SD gets in is to win the Pioneer (the at-large was going to be iffy anyway, even if they DID beat NAU), and there's no guarantee that they'll be able to do that, particularly if they come out of the SD State game with a ton of injuries, because Jacksonville and Dayton (and perhaps Drake) will likely be in position to shut the door on the Toreros....

I'll be honest... I didn't read this past the first sentence because that's all I needed.

The PFL will not see an at-large bid for YEARS unless something crazy happens. The PFL is an amazingly weak conference that only deserves it auto.

The only way a PFL team is getting into the playoffs is by winning the auto bid...period...end of story.

How does losing to SDSU, a non-conference game, affect their status with the automatic bid?

Setting aside common knowledge of the PFL's inaptitude, let's just look at the best predictor of at-large worthiness, the GPI.
  • Last year, the Pioneer was rated 14th out of 14th in FCS conference strength and it wasn't even close. That's after Ivies, after Independents (ie., Charlotte who was just awful), after the MEAC and after the SWAC.

Of the eleven teams in the Pioneer, seven of them had GPI ratings in triple digits. In the GPI -- as in golf --, a high score is not a good thing.

Outside of teams named San Diego and Jacksonville, the highest-rated team in the Pioneer was Drake at 88th.

The Pioneer has sent a champion to the playoffs twice and, in both cases, the PFL representative has lost by 30+ points in games that were not as close as the final score would indicate.
Honestly, the only way a PFL team gets an at-large bid is by playing teams not in the PFL.

Back in like 1961 or something. Seeing as USD has all of 693 fans, this won't generate much at the gate. I'm sure the local press will eat it up though and try to hype this abortion of a game into something its not. The SDSU home slate is beyond crappy.

Also SDSU was put into this situation when their previous scheduling agreements with Navy and SJSU were tossed due to conference realignment. Still, scheduling USD...

Isn't that what everyone said about the Big South? Yet it happened.

I never said a second Pioneer bid was likely. I'm just saying that the ONLY way it happens is for U of SD to play a decent FCS school that's good enough to have SOMETHING of a reputation but NOT in the stratosphere like NDSU. If this unlikely money-grab (it will likely fizzle at the gate as one of you has already mentioned) results in a ton of injuries, the Toreros won't even SNIFF the auto-bid. If there's to be ANY shot at a second bid, it will HAVE to go down like the Big South did last year. And with the injuries likely to result from playing the Aztecs, it's not even CLOSE to a possibility.

The only chance was keeping the NAU game. And even THAT was more like a shot in the dark than a done deal....

Coastal was the best team that's been in WaGriz in years. Possibly since App State in 2009.

San Diego was the worst. Ever. Period.
