Sam Houston in Tough Spot Now, Starting QB Gone

Post by JohnStOnge »

Not only lost the game but lost starting quarterback Brian Bell. From what I saw after he went out they do not have a backup that's ready to win games for them. From the looks of the way Bell was writhing in pain after getting his shoulder injured I don't think it's likely he'll be back next week and they go to Central Arkansas next week with an 8-3 record. They could very well lose that game and end up at 8-4 with three of their wins being over Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, and Texas Southern. The win over Eastern Washington is a quality win but I'd say they'd certainly be on the bubble at best.

Tough game for them. They were trailing 31-21 and drove down into the red zone. Had a guy wide open for a TD. Ball hit him right in the hands but he dropped it. Then they threw an interception Southeastern returned to deep in their territory to set up a field goal making it 34-21. Next possession they drive again. Bell breaks off a long run deep into Southeastern territory but that's when he gets hurt. Put a backup in and he throws an interception in the end zone.

Nightmare night. They're in serious trouble without Bell.

If you're talking about seeing Sam Houston State i the playoffs they very well may not be there. Central Arkansas is a decent team playing at home even with all THEIR injuries. One thing they had was a solid backup quarterback who could step in in Wynrick Smothers went down. Doesn't look like Sam Houston State has that. I'd have to say I favor Central Arkansas to win next week. And if that happens there's a real question about whether or not Sam Houston State gets into the tournament.
