Griz coach Bobby Hauck signs new one-year contract

Post by dbackjon »

University of Montana head football coach Bobby Hauck has agreed to a new one-year contract to coach the UM football team, Athletic Director Jim O'Day announced Friday.

The contract was signed earlier this week by Coach Hauck, UM President George Dennison and O'Day, but is subject to final approval by the Montana Board of Regents, who have it as an agenda item for their March meeting.

"We are excited to have Bobby leading the Griz again this year," O'Day said. "He recently completed an outstanding season in coaching UM to the national championship game. Bobby and his assistants are to be commended for a fantastic job in guiding the team both on the field and in the classroom."

In addition to their many successes on the field, the UM football team compiled an impressive 2.90 grade point average in the fall semester.

"We expect a great deal of our coaches, and Coach Hauck has lived up to those standards," said UM President George Dennison. "I appreciate his attention to detail and efforts to improve an already quite successful program, athletically and academically. The involvement of his players in and around the community also merits comment, as they spend countless hours volunteering their time for the betterment of today's youth."

Hauck's new contract calls for a base salary of $144,500. In addition, it increases the pool for assistant coaches by $16,500. Also, the pact calls for an additional $40,000 for television and radio coach's show appearances; a country club membership; and $500 per month for a car stipend. Additional income comes in the form of camps and/or clinics, as well as annual performance incentives.

The incentives include:
* $5,000 for achieving a team GPA for the previous three academic
years of 2.85 or higher;
* $5,000 for maintaining a four-year average academic progress
rate score of at least 950;
* $5,000 for maintaining season attendance;
* $5,000 for attending requested UM Athletics and Grizzly
Scholarship Association functions;
* $7,500 for being named Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year;
* $5,000 for defeating a FCS team during non-conference season
that has been a qualifier in the FCS playoffs within the past two
years;
* $5,000 for finishing the season as Big Sky champs or co-champs,
or qualifying for the NCAA football playoffs;
* $2,500 for each victory in the FCS playoffs;
* $30,000 for winning the FCS championship.

So this bastard is gonne get BASICALLY about 230,000 gross income for 1 season. i would say very well deserved.

2. this bastard only signed a ONE YEAR DEAL! He fvcked up... he shouldve got his ass outta there to a div1a . he probably couldnt find a position he wanted so he signed a 1 year deal until next year when some div1 head coach is gonna lose his cash flow to 2-9 season. then old bobby boy is gonna kiss missula goodbye and cash that 144,000 into 1 million!

It's a likely scenario BF. i am not sure if it has changed or not but in Montana due to the legislature (I believe) the universities can only sign the coaches to 1 yr. contracts unless that has changed.

That's a good question and I don't know the answer to it but Iheard that the 1 yr. contract thing back in the Joe Glenn days and I don't know if it pertains to all coaches in the Montana Universtiy system or not. I would assume it does but I'm sure someone will have more complete information on the subject than I have provided. i would think you would want to be able to sign a contract for a longer period as well and can't remember the reasoning behind it.

Arizona used to have that rule for all - changed it to help retain coaches.

It is standard for all non-tenured university employees in many states

Ursus I thought that rule had changed and they offered him a 3-year deal last year and he turned it down....could be wrong though...either way, BF is right, when it's all said and done it'll be well over 200K. Not too shabby! :shock: :shock:

It very well may have and I remember something like that as well and that's why I am fairly tentative about my information.

I can't speak for other States but here we have a one year contract. At GSU the booster office sweetens the deal with a 3 year guarantee. It looks like a 4 year contract, but it is only a one year deal.

UM and MSU can offer 3 year contracts now and do. However, the buy-out is the complete remaining salary, so it is scewed so far in favor of the Admin., that there is little incentive for a coach, not worried about being fired, to sign it. The buyout can be a deterrent to new opportunities, so there is little reason for BH to sign it. It is no mystery that BH will move on when the opportunity is right, like his predecessors. The UM program will go on, as it has before.

I agree but I have a hard time believing that if a Pac-10 team or some BCS school wanted BH that a couple hundred K buyout would be a problem

agreed, putter. That's chump change to a Pac-10 school.

if thats the case... then the question is:

Is Bobby Hauck a GREAT football coach? :)
or
Is UM's football PROGRAM a gravy train w/ biscuit wheels? basically a dominating force no matter who at the controls :twisted:

...up to a certain point, I think it's the latter. BH has NOT been able to get them over the top in the NC game, however. :( :(

Yes, and like it or not, that will be his legacy if he leaves before getting the ring.
