Week 9 - Conference by Conference Breakdown

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Big Sky

UND 10-14 PORTST
NAU 17-13 CP
IDST 9-19 SUU
EWU 42-37 UMT
UCD 17-34 MTST

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 18-22

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 5-7

Best Performance: (#3) Eastern Washington 42, (#10) Montana 37 - They almost blew a 25-point fourth-quarter lead, but the Eagles still win in Missoula for the first time in 8 years thanks to a career-high 457 yards and 6 TDs passing from Vernon Adams.

Worst Performance: North Dakota 10, Portland St. 14 - In typical bad team fashion, the No-Nicks finally get a solid performance from their weakest link (defense) only to see their greatest strength (passing offense) mysteriously disappear.

Most Surprising Result: Suffocating D - Though the EWU/Montana game exemplified how we usually think of the Big Sky, three of the other four BSC games had teams winning with fewer than 20 points.

Southland

NWST 10-44 SHSU
SFA 31-66 UCA
LAM 34-56 SELU
MCNSE 55-30 NICH

  • NConf Record: 0-0

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 14-5

Best Performance: (#23) Central Arkansas 66, Stephen F. Austin 31 - Ryan Howard has already made Bear fans forget about Wynrick Smothers after throwing for 403 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 30 attempts against SFA.

Worst Performance: Stephen F. Austin 31, (#23) Central Arkansas 66 - The Maginot Line the Lumberjacks call a defense is allowing 535 yards-per-game and 48 points-per-game this season.

    Most Surprising Result: (none)

Missouri Valley

UNI 34-37 SDKST (2OT)
SDK 14-28 ILST
MIZST 38-27 WIU
NDSU 56-10 INST

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 20-17

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 14-7

Best Performance: (#25) South Dakota St. 37, (#17) Northern Iowa 34 (2OT) - The Jackrabbits keep faint playoff hopes alive after holding UNI to just 2 touchdowns in 5 redzone trips.

Worst Performance: Western Illinois 27, Missouri St. 38 - Several special teams miscues send the Leathernecks to their 4th. straight loss.

Most Surprising Result: (#17) Northern Iowa 34, (#25) South Dakota St. 37 (2OT) - Following a stellar September, the Panthers are 0-4 in conference play for the first time in 35 years.

OVC

EKU 31-7 SEMO
EIU 34-16 TSU
JAXST 34-14 TTU
UTM 38-14 AP

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 19-15

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 13-5

Best Performance: (#2) Eastern Illinois 34, (#21) Tennessee St. 16 - Even TSU's relatively good pass defense couldn't slow down Jimmy Garoppolo as he provides 100-yard days to 3 of his receivers.

Worst Performance: Southeast Missouri St. 7, Eastern Kentucky 31 - Redhawks fall to 1-11 all-time against EKU at home.

    Most Surprising Result: (none)

Pioneer League

BUT 14-42 USD
VALPO 10-23 DRAKE
STET 0-27 MARIST
MER 38-31 CAMP
DVDSN 13-56 JU
DAY 42-14 MHEAD

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 14-24

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 3-16

Best Performance: San Diego 42, Butler 14 - Mason Mills throws for 407 yards and 5 TDs in a surprisingly overwhelming win.

Worst Performance: Davidson 13, Jacksonville 56 - Wildcats give up 56 unanswered points and fall to 0-8.

Most Surprising Result: Butler 14, San Diego 42 - A brutal result for the Bulldogs creates a virtual 5-way tie for first in the most important Pioneer League standings ever (four teams are 4-1, Mercer is 3-1).

Tomorrow: the rest of the playoff conferences.

Yeah no kidding Garoppolo threw for nearly double the amount 410 of passing yds for TSU QB Butler 212.Plus the Tigers didn't help themselves in the area of penalties 13 for 110 yds. Also German is out with a serious injury.

Worst Performance: Holy Cross 23, Lafayette 41 - The Crusaders allow Lafayette QB Drew Reed to go 21/22 for 283 yards and 5 touchdowns, a 278.5 efficiency rating.

    Overall: 22-7

Best Performance: (#11) Maine 37, (#18) Villanova 35 - Marcus Wasilewski completes 82% of his passes & puts up 423 yards of total offense to just barely offset an equally strong performance by RB John Robertson on the other side.

Worst Performance: Rhode Island 13, Delaware 35 - Rams allow two 100-yard rushers and two 75+ yard rushing touchdowns in an uncompetitive loss.

    Most Surprising Result: (none)

Big South

LIB 24-0 GWEBB

Worst Performance: Gardner-Webb 0, Liberty 24 - This time a month ago, the Bulldogs were 4-1 with two top-25 upsets. Now they're completely out of any sort of hunt for anything.

    Most Surprising Result: (none)

MEAC

MORG 14-28 HOW
DSU 7-30 HAMP
ODU 27-24 NFOLK
NCCEN 24-10 SAV

Worst Performance: Delaware St. 7, Hampton 30 - Hornets commit 4 turnovers and lose rushing 225-42.

Most Surprising Result: Norfolk St. 24, (FBS) Old Dominion 27 - The first—& almost certainly last—intracity battle at Dick Price Stadium nearly results in an out-of-nowhere upset thanks to some salty redzone D by the Spartans.

SoCon

ELON 24-27 WCU (OT)
FUR 16-48 LSU
SAM 34-27 WOFF
CIT 24-28 UTC

  • NConf Record*: 0-1

    Overall: 4-8

    Best Performance: (#22) Samford 34, (#12) Wofford 27 - Bulldogs hold Wofford to 3.7 yards-per-carry in offsetting a 4-0 turnover deficit.

Worst Performance: Elon 24, Western Carolina 27 (OT) - Elon "wins" the SoCon version of Russian Roulette by ending WCU's 26-game conference losing streak.

Most Surprising Result: Furman 16, (FBS) LSU 48 - The Paladins ended up losing yardage by almost 500 as one might expect, but they somehow managed to play the top-15 Tigers within 4 in the first half.

* - I know App State & Georgia Southern are still technically in the SoCon this year, but I'm counting them as FBS and as a non-conference opponent for SoCon teams (same idea as Georgia State last season & UMass the year before).

Tomorrow: Ivy, SWAC & Indies.

    Overall: 7-11

Worst Performance: Charlotte 14, Charleston Southern 36 - 49ers are outrushed 375-81 as they lose for the 1st. time in 3 games against the Big South

Most Surprising Result: Abilene Christian 29, (FBS) New Mexico St. 34 - The Wildcats end up 6 yards short of a monmumental upset (see below).

* - Old Dominion is a first-year transitional, so I'm counting them as FBS and not counting them as an FCS Independent.

The LSU Bulldogs?

And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?
