Week 5 - Conference by Conference Breakdown

Post by Mvemjsunpx »

Big Sky

EWU 34-49 SHSU
CP 38-34 PORTST
IDST 13-30 UCD
SAC 31-3 WEB
UMT 16-34 NAU
SUU 27-21 NOCO
MTST 63-20 UND

  • NConf Record: 0-1
    Overall: 18-21

    vs. FCS: 0-1
    Overall: 5-6

Best Performance: (#24) Northern Arizona 34, (#7) Montana 16 - The Lumberjack defense fustigates the Griz offense figuratively—and Jordan Johnson literally—in picking up their first win over UM in Flagstaff since 1997.

Worst Performance: Idaho St. 13, UC Davis 30 - Allowing a 200-yard rusher to UC Davis of all teams should make a Bengal fan wonder if Mike Kramer is making any progress at all.

Most Surprising Result: (#24) Northern Arizona 34, (#7) Montana 16 - An impressive win like this brings us to our annual question: how long before the 'Jacks collapse this time? ;)

Southland

Worst Performance: Stephen F. Austin 48, Prairie View A&M 56 - Stephen F. Austin continues their push to be the most inconsistent team of all time in committing 5 turnovers & losing to a SWAC team a week after knocking off ranked Montana State.

Most Surprising Result: Stephen F. Austin 48, Prairie View A&M 56 - Oh, yeah, did I mention the Lumberjacks gained 827 yards in this loss? How the fuck do you put up 827 yards & lose!? No, seriously, how is that even possible? :ohno:

Worst Performance: Illinois St. 10, Missouri St. 37 - The Redbirds barely manage 200 yards and commit 5 turnovers in revealing all of last year's momentum is gone.

Most Surprising Result: Missouri St. 37, Illinois St. 10 - Bears win their first MO-Valley opener in 9 years.

OVC

UTM 17-7 SEMO

Best Performance: (#8) Eastern Illinois 42, Eastern Kentucky 7 - Jimmy Garoppolo throws for 322 yards, which is actually a season low.

Worst Performance: Eastern Kentucky 7, (#8) Eastern Illinois 42 - The Colonels suffer their worst I-AA/FCS loss in 10 years.

Most Surprising Result: Tennessee Tech 38, Indiana St. 37 - The Golden Eagles somehow dodge Shakir Bell's 269 total yards and a 290-yard deficit in total offense.

Pioneer League

CAMP 42-49 VALPO (OT)
MARIST 31-20 DAY
DRAKE 17-31 MER
BUT 45-27-JU

Worst Performance: Davidson 14, Morehead St. 45 - The Wildcats have now been blown out twice in a row by a team they'd won 3 straight over previously.

Most Surprising Result: Drake 17, Mercer 31 - The Bulldogs, now off to their worst start in 22 years, commit 7 turnovers against a program that's only been playing football for less than a month.

Tomorrow: the rest of the playoff conferences.

You said it yourself in the loss to PVAM (5) timely turnovers.Again that was the biggest win in the history of the Panthers. Also they allowed the Panthers to gain 202 team yds.Lovelocke hurt them with his arm and legs.

Most Surprising Result: Central Connecticut St. 7, Rhode Island 42 - CCSU looks to be the minor league version of Stephen F. Austin; their win over Albany is sandwiched between utterly humiliating losses to Holy Cross & Rhody.

Worst Performance: Presbyterian 21, Charlotte 45 - After going up 14-7, the Blue Hose allow the neophyte 49ers to score 38 straight points.

Most Surprising Result: Charleston Southern 27, (FBS) Appalachian St. 24 - The Big South is now 7-1 against the SoCon. :o

MEAC

NFOLK 27-21 MORG

    Overall: 8-16

    vs. FCS*: 0-1
    Overall: 3-8

Best Performance: Furman 24, The Citadel 17 - The Paladins hold the option-based Bulldogs to just 132 yards rushing.

Worst Performance: Western Carolina 23, Samford 62 - The Catamounts haven't won a DI game since 2010 & this result doesn't suggest they're anywhere near ending that drought.

Most Surprising Result: The Citadel 17, Furman 24 - The Bulldogs have now lost 14 of the last 19 in this series.

* - I know App State & Georgia Southern are still technically in the SoCon this year, but I'm counting them as FBS and as a non-conference opponent for SoCon teams (same idea as Georgia State last season & UMass the year before).

Tomorrow: Ivy, SWAC & Indies.

Best performance in the Valley was NDSU going into their rival's home field and shutting them out and holding the nation's leading rusher to 4 yards and team to -32.

UNI's was very impressive also but not close to NDSU's.

How was a 20-0 win impressive after defeating Delaware St 51-0.I would have thought the Bison would have poured it on the Jackrabbits like as in 40-0.

SDSU is a decent team...beating them 20-0 is impressive. DSU is an absolute pathetic team and NDSU could have made it 100-0 if they wanted.

The MEAC remains a joke of a league.

No. McNeese & SoDak State are about equal and the UNI/McNeese game was over right away while the NDSU/SDSU game was still just 7-0 heading to the 4th.

Ivy League

PENN 6-35 NOVA
MONM 37-14 COLUM
HC 31-28 DART
BROWN 23-41 HARV
COR 23-38 YALE
PRINCE 50-22 GTOWN

  • NConf Record: 1-3
    Overall: 7-5

    vs. FCS: 1-3
    Overall: 7-5

Best Performance: Harvard 41, Brown 23 - A 31-0 run gives the Crimson their 7th. straight home win against the Bears.

Worst Performance: Columbia 14, Monmouth 37 - Marcorus Garrett runs for 152 yards and both Lion TDs on just 16 carries, but gets little help.

Most Surprising Result: Dartmouth 28, Holy Cross 31 - A late fumble on a kick return dooms any hope of a last-second win against the inconsistent Crusaders.

SWAC

PVAMU 56-48 SFA
LAMAR 27-16 GRAM
JSU 19-14 SU
ALCORN 30-49 ALST
TXSO 10-12 AAMU

  • NConf Record: 1-1
    Overall: 2-17

    vs. FCS: 1-1
    Overall: 1-8

Best Performance: Prairie View A&M 56, Stephen F. Austin 48 - Panther QB Jerry Lovelocke didn't quite put up the insane yardage numbers of his SFA counterpart, but 380 passing yards and 7 total TDs is nothing to complain about.

Worst Performance: Texas Southern 10, Alabama A&M 12 - The Tigers are tackled for loss 11 times by the Bulldog defense.

Most Surprising Result: Prairie View A&M 56, Stephen F. Austin 48 - This was Prairie View's first-ever win over SFA, though perhaps more surprising is that these two nearby opponents hadn't played since the '80s.

Independents

tarl 41-34 ACU (2OT)
enmu 26-33 UIW
MONM 37-14 COLUM
CHAR 45-21 PRESBY

  • Non-Ind. Record*: 3-1
    Overall: 11-9

    vs. FCS*: 2-0
    Overall: 4-8

Best Performance: Charlotte 45, Presbyterian 21 - A strong running game helps 49er QB Matt Johnson throw for 269 yards and 3 TDs on just 23 attempts.

Worst Performance: Abilene Christian 34, (DII) Tarleton St. 41 (2OT) - ACU allows 251 yards rushing to Texan star (that's right, TSU's nickname is the "Texans" while their women are called the "TexAnns" :?) Jerome Regal.

Most Surprising Result: Abilene Christian 34, (DII) Tarleton St. 41 (2OT) - After crushing their first three non-DI opponents, the Wildcats are run over by a barely-ranked one.

* - Old Dominion is a first-year transitional, so I'm counting them as FBS and not counting them as an FCS Independent.

The only thing is that I think SDSU was kind of over rated. I think they got significantly outplayed by Southeastern Louisiana but got by because Southeastern Louisiana turned the ball over 6 times. I know teams have to be rated on won/loss outcome but they got outgained 506 to 345. Another thing is that, though they got 158 yards against Southeastern Louisiana, 75 of those yards came on one play. For the most part they couldn't run the ball. Same with Zenner. Yes he had 128 rushing yards but, again, 75 came on one play. Play in and play out he was not that effective.

Then you look at their other two wins. One is Butler. The other was by 35-28 over North Dakota. In its next two games North Dakota lost by 55-17 to Montana and by 63-20 to Montana State.

I can understand thinking McNeese was also overrated given what UNI did to them. But I do think South Dakota State was kind of an illusion and I especially thought that because of the Southeastern Louisiana game. I don't think the better team won that one and expected North Dakota State to handle the Jackrabbits pretty easily.

I wouldn't say South Dakota State is overrated ... they're very sound in what they do and do a great job playing to their strengths. That said, we match up extremely well with them and physically and athletically dominated them for most of the game ... we could have easily blown that game wide open, and should have. But to SDSU's credit, they made us pay for our mistakes and did what good teams do when you don't put them away when you have the chance ... in crunch time, they executed better than us. That said, when we hit our stride and string four consistent quarters together, we're going to blow somebody off the field. We have a chance to be very, very good by season's end.

Agree to disagree.

SDSU/NDSU games are always battles because the teams know each other so well. Does not matter what the records are.
