Chadwell names Chad Staggs as Bucs' Defense Coordinator

Post by CSUBUCDAD »

Looks like Chadwell is bringing in all his North Greenville/Delta State coaches. Heck, with the success he brought to both of those programs I have no problem with the changes he is making.
Chadwell names Chad Staggs as Bucs' Defense Coordinator
February 20, 2013

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern head football coach Jamey Chadwell has named Chad Staggs as his defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, the Bucs’ new head coach announced on Wednesday.

Staggs comes to CSU after spending last season on Chadwell’s staff as the defensive coordinator at Delta State in Cleveland, Miss. This will be his fifth season on staff with Chadwell.

"I am pleased to announce Chad Staggs as our linebackers coach and defensive coordinato," Chadwell said on Wednesday. "Chad brings four years of experience of coordinating a defense and has had our defenses consistently ranked at the top of the standings. His aggressive style of defense will fit perfectly with our desire to have a defensive team that plays with purpose and passion. Being from the state of South Carolina, he has several contacts throughout the state that will pay dividends on the recruiting trail. Chad and His wife Kelli will be great ambassadors for Charleston Southern......."

Easy there, compadre. The NGU turnaround was impressive but Delta was 42-14 in the four years prior to Chadwell and 3-7 in the one season he was there. Not saying he's not a good coach but don't choke yourself on the Kool-Aid.

Most coaches would have gone winless with what he inherited. Delta lost nearly their entire offensive and defensive starting lineups from the previous 3 seasons. I know these coaches he is bringing with him. It is a pretty decent upgrade IMHO.

To assume that a perennial playoff contender would have suddenly gone winless is a pretty big assumption.

I wish them the best, and hope they win the Big South again like 2005!

But, the best D-Coordinator ever to coach at CSU was Todd Knight (current Newberry HC) from 1997-2002. If that man had any kind of offense to help him D out, they'd have been a 9-10 win team. I remember watching their D give Wofford hell every single year. I was in the stands of the 1999 CSU vs Wofford game. CSU lost 20-0. The D gave up 7 all night. Wofford's D scored twice. I wasnt there, but they shut-out Liberty in 2000 @ Liberty. And just looking at past scores, Knight's D only gave up 19 and 24 points to the Univ of South Florida in 97, 98. And the media guide says his 2000 D only gave up 250 yards per game!!!!!

A little perspective: USF started their program from scratch in 1997 and were extremely limited in scholarships and experience those first two years. Also, beating Liberty at Liberty wasn't a big deal in 2000. A lot of people did it.

I was there. The score was 25-0 and was a case of two horrible offensive teams who couldn't get out of their own way. I think there was maybe 500 yards of offense between the two teams combined. CSU got three short field TD's thanks to turnovers and two safeties on Liberty holding calls in their own end zone.

One sequence in the 3rd quarter that best illustrated the day: Liberty's drove to the CSU 30 but threw an interception. The CSU defender runs it back to about the Liberty 35 but is stripped of the ball, Liberty recovers and runs the fumble back to midfield. Three plays later, Liberty punts. Three plays later, CSU punts. Three plays later, Liberty punts. Yeah, it was that kind of day.

All true, USF did have some great 1-AA players in those few years before moving up. And also true, in 2000 Liberty wasnt that good. Those late 90's, early 00's CSU teams were exactly like you said- really mediocre offense, but a very tough defense that won them a few games and kept them competitive in the losses.

But remember, I clearly accept that Liberty is a better program than Charleston Southern, so even in a down year, a CSU win @ Liberty is big for us.
