FCS playoff expansion distinct possibility

The PFL would gain an automatic qualifier if the playoff field increases to 22 teams. Coaches across the FCS, though, generally support a 24-team field, which would add the PFL champ and three more at-large qualifiers.

At 24 teams, 16 could play in the first round, with eight earning byes. Such a bracket makes more sense than 20 or 22 teams.

"The playoffs are our subdivision's biggest asset," Viverito said. "Success in the playoffs is the primary goal of ours every season. Expansion to 20 teams was a very important step to giving more of our teams that opportunity. There's still more deserving teams that deserve that opportunity to play in the postseason. It's certainly our league goal to work for continuing bracket expansion."

"Playoffs are exciting, it just creates that atmosphere on campus that you want with your football program," Southern Illinois coach Dale Lennon said. "It's a fun thing to be a part of, so if you can make more opportunities, I think all the better."

The playoff system in NCAA Division II is 24 teams, while Division III invites 32 teams.

Every patsie we let into the playoffs makes the regular season that much less meaningful. :ohno: :ohno:

Auto bids to:

BSC champ
MVFC champ
CAA champ
Southern champ

and 4 at-large bids beyond that. Less is more. :coffee: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee: :coffee:

I personally think 2 teams are enough. If you can't be the very best team in the regular season, why should you have a shot at a championship? You just don't deserve it. Even better, the NCAA can take the corrupt committee out of the process & have the 2 championship teams decided by some sort of amalgam combining the top-25 polls & computer rankings; a nice combination of subjectivity & objectivity. I know what I'm describing is a bit radical & out there, but it's difficult to envision a fairer system than that.

I hope you just forgot to hit the sarcasm button, Venus. Otherwise, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Who decides just who those teams are? Computers are notoriously inaccurate, particularly since they depend on fallible humans for programming. You're essentially parroting the B(C)$ company line. Such a dumb thing eliminates the excitement of an upset. That's one of the things that makes a playoff so fun.

No, I actually just came up with the BCS system on my own 14 years after college football started using it. I've been frozen inside a glacier since high school.

 - Is that better. ;)

I couldn't agree more, as long as one of those two teams is always named Montana. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Nope. Nothing fair about that.
