Griz lose both coordinators

Post by putter »

First Jonathan Smith goes to Pitt and now DC Breske gets hired by Leach at Washington State....this hurts

Maybe Breske did better at Montana, but firing him was the best thing NDSU ever did. I am sure the griz will find a capable replacement

Yeah, this doesn't mention Smith, and I doubt he would take any other position than OC.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter. The fact Montana is one season removed from a 7-4 year and our coordinators are being looked at for other positions speaks volumes. I keep trying to remind everyone from other schools that 4 new coaches since we won our first championship equals out to a new coach every 4 years. Pretty damn impressive to have been as solid as we have been - look at what one bad coach did to GSU and how long it took them to get back. Now we have to worry about our coordinators after a solid season.

Montana is a top-notch program that hasn't had any trouble attracting quality assistants or head coaches. I don't believe this will be any different. However, there is always that concern of what if this time. I would say, "no worries." Montana will continue to be a FCS force.

He did better every where BUT NDSU. He's a good coordinator, not sure what happened at NDSU.

While losing Breske and Smith (if indeed Smith is leaving) sucks, I think the Griz will be fine. Gregorak could step into Breske's shoes with much the same attitude, and possibly philosophy. As for the offense, I was never really sure how much of the gameplan/playcalling was Smith's philosophy and how much of that came from Pflu. Remember, Smith was a totally untested quantity as an OC when he came to UM. I'm sure Pflu can find someone to fill the shoes. Not to lessen the loss by any means, but the Griz lose coaches to bigger programs fairly constantly and always find new ones to step up.

Just more of the downward spiral.

Eh...you guys need to try something different. Montana players have always looked pretty uncoordinated whenever they leave Grizzyworld stadium for a playoff game.

For D-Cord the Griz should look at Brian Ward the current D-Cord at Drake. He was our secondary coach last year and played a big role in getting our secondary back on track.

Here is a quote from our beat writer talking about Ward's impact...
For NDSU, it’s a short-term setback to the team considering Ward took a secondary that went from one of the worst in the FCS in 2009 with three interceptions to one of the best this season with 18 thefts, which tied for eighth in the country. Rare was the Bison d-back who was out of position and it was coaching that took a raw talent like Marcus Williams from No. 5 on the depth chart at the start of fall practice to one of the top cornerbacks in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, if not the entire FCS.

I thought this staff would make it through this off-season with no defections or firings. Add this to the keys for the 2011 season: the need to hire a good defensive backs coach

Got a link? If he is, he's not OC. WRs coach Robert Prince was promoted to OC two days ago. The site says NOTHING about Smith.

Thanks, SE. Too bad the TV folk can't proofread. They assign Mike Breske to the position of Defensive "Doordinator."

There may also be a typo in the last paragraph. They claim that Boise's previous OC was one "Bent Pase," who left for Florida. FL's website is in transition as the new HC builds his staff; no OC is listed. As I've never heard of anyone named "Bent," I suspect they meant Brent Pease.
