Zero FGs on the season?
Sorry if that has been discussed, but do the Guins really not have a FG all year?

Looks that way. Here is the team's stat summary showing they are 0-2 on the season:

Re: Zero FGs on the season?
I think we CAN kick field goals, but we have not been put in many situations to kick field goals this year. Our offense once it gets inside the 30 almost always scores a touchdown.
0 field goals on the year, but yet the #2 offense in the country.
I can assure you that Coach Wolford has the confidence in our offense from 4th and 5 out to get those 5 yards and the first down. He knows kicking FG's are important, but he has been outspoken in his belief that touchdown's win football games.

If I'm not mistaken, they are the only team in not only the FCS, but also the FBS and Division II to not have made a FG yet this season. (though there are a number of D3 teams w/o FGs)

Re: Zero FGs on the season?
I just found it funny the #2 scoring team in the country hasn't kicked a FG yet.

Is there much correlation?catbob wrote:I just found it funny the #2 scoring team in the country hasn't kicked a FG yet.
In 2010, here were the top three scoring offenses:
1 Jacksonville 42.18 ppg, 7 fg
2 Bethune-Cookman 38.17 ppg, 2 fg
3 Liberty 36.45 ppg, 20 fg

One important thing that stat sheet doesn't say on ANY page: the distance of the FGs. Missing a couple of chippies is an entirely different thing than if he missed a couple of Janikowski monsters.TribeFanInNC wrote:Looks that way. Here is the team's stat summary showing they are 0-2 on the season:

Just sayin'....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

They were somewhere in between those extremes: 39 at Michigan State (4th & 9), 41 vs South Dakota State (4th & 11)SuperHornet wrote:One important thing that stat sheet doesn't say on ANY page: the distance of the FGs. Re: Zero FGs on the season?
Eek! Down and distance probably too far to go for it, and in too close to comfortably punt unless you have a pooch or coffin corner specialist (both dying breeds today).
Perhaps it's a good thing they generally don't need that particular weapon. Kinda sounds like my Sirens, who went nearly 10 years in existence ignoring the presence of a kicker (except for KOs, of course) because they got so good at converting insane fourth downs. Heck, now that they have a kicker who can hit from better than 40 yards out, they STILL ignore her most of the time, and I can't figure out why (other than the fact that they can STILL convert 4th and 20 on a freaking stretch play).
I guess if you can get TDs practically whenever you want, the FG is irrelevant. I had a stat-geek-type friend in the dorms at Sac who wanted to ban the use of TEs, RBs, K's, and P's, and go Darryl Lamonica-style bombs-away on EVERY freaking play. That's similar, I guess.

Re: Zero FGs on the season?
One thing I didn't mention about the 2 misses: They were attempted by different kickers. Sounds like there isn't a lot of confidence in the FG kicking game. They are 8 of 11 on 4th down conversions, which supports your point.

easiest scholarship ever... YSU's kicker. It's like being Tebow in the NFL, except he gets to have his ass handed to him for a few games

If you don't have confidence in a FG kicker from 40 yards you shouldn't have him on the roster....40 yards isn't "that" tough for a D1 kicker.SuperHornet wrote:Eek! We've had two damn good ones, Paul McFadden and Jeff Wilkins. However this group... not so much.chris wrote:easiest scholarship ever... YSU's kicker. It's like being Tebow in the NFL, except he gets to have his ass handed to him for a few games
I have confidence from inside 40, but I am even more confident in our offense converting on 4th and 5 from the 25 yard line.

Re: Zero FGs on the season?
I'd agree with you except for the fact that one absolutely HAS to have at least a semi-accurate PAT kicker (whatever his effective range beyond PAT range) unless one chooses to confine oneself to going for two every time. Of course, that's something we Hornet fans have considered this season featuring "The Perils of Diniz 2.0"clenz wrote:If you don't have confidence in a FG kicker from 40 yards you shouldn't have him on the roster....40 yards isn't "that" tough for a D1 kicker.SuperHornet wrote:Eek!
