Nicholls State AD is a Douchebag

In 1998 Nicholls State was to play TXST in October. Instead, there was a flood all along the I35 corridor and San Marcos was impenetrable. The game was rescheduled and played in November.
The TXST administration/students, came up with a way to commemorate the flood by getting a paddle, painting one side TXST colors and the other NSU colors.
This started the annual "Battle for the Paddle.
The victory by either team has been added to their side each year and that team held the paddle until the following year.
Nicholls won, last year, in 4OTs
This year they come to San Marcos and their AD announced, today, that the paddle isn't coming. They intend to keep it no matter the outcome of the game.

A direct challenge to Fraternity Row or the engineering students at TX St... win the game - and go get it.

OR...

Win the game - and run over to their sideline and steal their headset cart and carry it out of the stadium - offer them a "trade"

Alabama State vs Tuskegee

Duke/NCCU only played one, rivals in the sense of sharing the same city like LSU/Southern
Idaho/Montana last played in 2003
Akron/Youngstown St haven't played since 1995

Alabama St/Tuskegee is the only one still being played and that's always the Hornets' homecoming.

FBS vs FCS rivalries never last once one of the schools moves up. Kudos to the Nichols State AD for giving TX State the finger.

In all fairness McMurray did beat FBS transition team UTSA.

Once you move from the scholarship limit of what you were at you are no longer that division team.

That's the way I see it. For example the NDSU v UND rivaly died with the Bison's move to 63 scholarships from 36.

I think my point is

The NSU AD made this decision all on his own.....during game week. Wasn't his decision to make. Had it been mutually agreed upon and they had decided this, say, over the summer, I wouldn't be complaining.
They beat us last year...one of only 4 wins they had (including a D2 win)
They just played ULL pretty damn close (they fell apart in the 4th q)
He, more or less, told his team they wouldn't be able to beat us, so why bother.

It's ok, bunch of us are bringing paddles to the game and the players are more than pissed.

I do like the "hold something of theirs hostage" and barter a trade idea.

FWIW - 31 people died in that flood....it is more than just a symbol of the game.

Kind of a dick move by Nicholls State AD. I would just tell him, "Oh you decided to keep the paddle? Nuts we decided to keep your teams locker room." Really isn't his decision to make considering it's a long term thing, my question is: is he really that unconfident in his own team?

On behalf of Appalachian, I would like to state for the record that quite a number of FBS rivalries still exist for us, the greatest of which may well be the Pie-Roots of EZ Carolina University (who got a bit too beeg fer thare breeches - LOL)

Another rivalry, possibly as great as that of EZCU, exists with the Demon Richards of Wake Forrest University, a mere 70 miles from downtown Boone. Even when playing in the Orange Bowl, they were never too big for their girly breeches; for they bravely turned-tail and ran away from scheduling the Mountaineers.

They have no issues, however, with scheduling the likes of Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, Elon and Liberty over the last 5 years. Wake FU simply grew tired of the fanny-spankings from Appalachian (and the hoards of Mountaineer fans who would annually descend upon Groves Stadium).

It seems to me that Nichols State and Texas State agreed to play for a trophy, on the understanding that they would be competing on a level playing field. It also seems that Texas State materially changed that understanding. If you choose not to be FCS anymore, you don't get to use FCS's nice things.

To translate these big words into Southern speak, if you agree to a duel using pistols, the duel will be cancelled if you show up with an AK-47 instead.

On the plus side for Texas State, you will have plenty of opportunities to foster rivalries with powers like New Mexico State and San Jose State in the future.

I'm with CatMom on this. The paddle really isn't that important, certainly not worth the ill will that a decision like this might create. This is a douchebag move.
