UTES vs. Sioux

Why is Utes o.k. but Sioux isn't? Apparently, the Utes are reasonable.

I found the combination of the blood red and two feathers very offensive. Are they trying to say that all Native Americans are blood thirsty?

Also note the feathers were hanging from a circle... Are they signifying that all Native Americans have drum circles? Or maybe they are saying all Native Americans have oddly shaped circular heads? :o

All in all, very offended... ;)

Fighting Irish is still the most offensive nickname in college sports.

No, Vikings is the most offensive, because I happen to be 75% Norwegian. Irish do fight, Norwegians did plunder, and Indians did what they had to, so they could survive. No Native American for me, they are Indians and they should be proud, no matter what tribe. I would be. Better than being a pirate and hoping for Val Hala after the Great Bar In The Sky closes. Go Sioux, and Go Utes.

Utah asked for the support of the Ute tribe and received it. As did Florida State and Central Michigan from the Seminole and Chippewa tribes respectively.

North Dakota asked for the support of the Sioux and did NOT receive it. That's the difference. The NCAA has publicly stated that tribal approval is the primary factor in determining whether these names will be approved.

They did not receive adequate support from the Sioux. If they had, we wouldn't be having this conversation. The Standing Rock Sioux tribe is on the record as opposed until they vote again, and they refuse to hold a new vote. I'm aware that there's another tribe which was more supportive. Apparently, that didn't satisfy whatever threshold the NCAA is looking for.

The TRIBE voted in favor of the name.

The crotchety old fucks known as the counsel members, or whatever they are called, said that they didn't like the results and refused to do as the majority of the voting members of the tribe wanted them to do.

Those same few members are not allowing it to go to another vote.
