The Griz played a great game & won as I predicted, but I definitely see why JMU was the #1 team. They came close to overcoming a 4-0 turnover deficit in a semifinal game.

The Griz don't beat themselves, though, & that's why they win these games.

Ooooh, Kaayyyy....

Mountaineer, this really isn't a smack thread as much as it is a reckoning for all the smack and patronizing the Big Sky teams have had to put up with the last few seasons. If I had a dime for every time I heard a smartass remark about the Big Fluffy Cloud in the Sky Conference...

The stats don't tell the story of tonight's game. Montana OWNED JMU, which rightfully gives them the privilege of silencing their critics. I can see why JMU made it to the playoffs, but once again, Montana's execution and coaching showed why THEY belong in the Championship Game.

I guess I don't get the whole thing of going crazy and talking smack when it always seems the poster doing all the talking is a fan of a team that's never done shit to begin with. Southern Utah. :wtf:

Now Griz fans have every right to crow and they should. :thumb:

Does everyone west of the Mississippi get Griz cookies or something in the mail tomorrow? :P

Well as travelinman said this is not a smack thread. This is a reckoning thread as he said. And it is not just only the "Big Fluffy Conference" comments its also the comments relating towards how all football is obsolete out west compared to back east, i just think its nice that montana proved them wrong!! And yeah i may an SUU fan but i am a Montana fan second, and i am pulling for the Griz this year. :D

I get where you're both coming from. Perfectly undestandable. :D

Personally, I still think the best football in the country is played here in the South (it's religion), but I have no problem giving you West Coaster's props for the Griz win. :P

...since I was a kid, I've always been a huge FBS SEC ACC fan...Neyland Stadium is the Vatican. Obviously, being around it my adult years, I love FCS, but Rocky Top...

...sends chills down my spine just typing it.

Get a couple of mags specifically on Southern recruiting and the SEC. I've been to every "major" stadium in the south...FBS and FCS...some for business reasons...some for recreation. I agree that there's a different fan base and community attitude towards fball in the South...but talent wise...that's tough. The kids out west aren't "born" into the game as they are in TX and the South, nor are they "bred" for athletic traits via trailer park eugenics, which is VERY alive and well in the south (...the stories I could tell...). There's night and day difference in attitudes towards youth development.
Example, I suspect that it's fair to say EVERY kid in the South, as he's growing up and playing sports...even just at grade school, at some point is "evaluated" for their ability to play football. Those with speed, toughness, athleticism, accumen, aggression, are "cultivated". Out West, unless a kid "gravitates" toward football, is introduced by his parents/teachers/coaches to the game, or is "accidentally" discovered by an adult with scouting experience, most kids never get evaluated. In CA, with a population of 30 million, the easiest way to discover the kid is via "size". Some coaches intentionally look for genetics (nepotism), while some honestly take the time to examine overall potential. In any event, there are probably a few thousand potential college LB's/Safeties in every graduating class out here, but only 20-30 get any hard looks, and those usually because they were promoted heavily by their HS coaches, took some nice angles, knocked some opponent's head off and showed well on tape.
Point is, Eastern/Southern analysts, coaches, and even players ASSUME Western players/teams are inferior, which is a pretty myopic view.

Pretty dead on, there are a few things i would love to add though... One thing is that just like previously stated kids aren't pushed to football in the west, and i'm not talkin bout cali, or even oregon or washington, i'm talking about home grown boys from montana. Football is just as much a religion here as it is in Texas, except for one thing, our fathers don't go crazy if we decide we don't wanna play. The players that are great from MONTANA are great because their fathers allowed them to be great by not pushing them, and taking all the fun out of the game. The reason Montana does so well is that they have players like Colt Anderson who grew up in Montana and knows what it takes to be a real champion. Whether Montana wins the championship or not I know that each one of those guys on the UM team know that they Deserved to be there, and that they are champions. The great thing about FCS football, and why i hate BCS and can't stand to even watch a NCAA game that includes teams from BCS is that on any given day a team can rise to a challenge and overcome adversary. The Griz did it tonight with their win... and i'm not saying they didn't deserve it, they deserved every bit of it. But i don't like leaving it to computers, let them do it on the field. Those GRIZ deserve every single bit of what they have achieved, expecially when they are a team in a so called "rebuilding" year. They have a running back that was a wide receiver and now has an uncanny ability to run the ball for huge yardage. Props to the Griz, and I hope JMU's beds are warm tonight, they played a great game, but someone has to win, and someone has to lose.

First, CONGRATS again to Montana...great game...Great Team...

The GRIZ always represent the BSC well, and all Montana Fans should be proud...

Now, for the rest of you western pretenders...when are you going to stop living your lives vicariously through the Montana Griz...

In the last 10 years, Montana, McNeese State, and Northern Iowa are the only teams from west of the Mississippi to have made or won the finals...and lots of you westerners don't even consider the MVFC a "western" conference...

MONTANA WON...and was I surprised...HELL NO, they are consistantly a great team...

What would shock me is seeing a team other than Montana come out of the Big Fluffy...that's right, I said it...

Really, we should just call it the Big Griz conference...since they seem to be the only team that can put together a consistant winning program...strong enough to come to the playoffs AND WIN...

Weber blew their chance...I know, they'll whine and say we had to play the Big Bad Griz...OK, but you didn't win...that's how you advance...

It's not our fault that 69% of the FCS teams are east of the Mississippi...you want to play us...have your AD pick up the phone and get on a schedule...

For those of you who feel Montana's victory somehow vindicates "western" football....NEWS FLASH...it vindicates MONTANA FOOTBALL...NO MORE...

MONTANA WON LAST NIGHT...THEY DEFEATED JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY...nothing more, nothing less...

If that makes you non-Montana fans feel your programs are somehow better...they aren't...but, please, go ahead and glow in the warmth that is MONTANA FOOTBALL...knowing all along that the last program from the BSC or any true western conference to make it to the finals that didn't have a GRIZ as a mascot and is still in FCS was.......MONTANA STATE in 1984

You have to admit that this years brackets were stacked against us 'westerners' proving otherwise.

Sorry, I don't make the NCAA rules, and I don't set up the budget for the tourney...

As long as the NCAA insists on the stupid "regionalization" and is footing the bill for the tourney, it will always be that way...not an east or west coast thing...

So, teams out west who know they are going to have to face the power house that is Montana better do one of two things...

1 - accept it

or

2 - BUILD BETTER TEAMS AND DEFEAT MONTANA...

Once again, congrats to Montana on an outstanding, nearly mistake-free game last night...
