Get a couple of mags specifically on Southern recruiting and the SEC. I've been to every "major" stadium in the south...FBS and FCS...some for business reasons...some for recreation. I agree that there's a different fan base and community attitude towards fball in the South...but talent wise...that's tough. The kids out west aren't "born" into the game as they are in TX and the South, nor are they "bred" for athletic traits via trailer park eugenics, which is VERY alive and well in the south (...the stories I could tell...). There's night and day difference in attitudes towards youth development.
Example, I suspect that it's fair to say EVERY kid in the South, as he's growing up and playing sports...even just at grade school, at some point is "evaluated" for their ability to play football. Those with speed, toughness, athleticism, accumen, aggression, are "cultivated". Out West, unless a kid "gravitates" toward football, is introduced by his parents/teachers/coaches to the game, or is "accidentally" discovered by an adult with scouting experience, most kids never get evaluated. In CA, with a population of 30 million, the easiest way to discover the kid is via "size". Some coaches intentionally look for genetics (nepotism), while some honestly take the time to examine overall potential. In any event, there are probably a few thousand potential college LB's/Safeties in every graduating class out here, but only 20-30 get any hard looks, and those usually because they were promoted heavily by their HS coaches, took some nice angles, knocked some opponent's head off and showed well on tape.
Point is, Eastern/Southern analysts, coaches, and even players ASSUME Western players/teams are inferior, which is a pretty myopic view.
