If A Tree Fell In The Forest....

Post by AZGrizFan »

If the unthinkable (in CAA apologists' minds) happens and BOTH CAA teams are defeated this weekend, will the bulk of the civilized not care about the game?

I mean, how will FCS EVER survive if BOTH teams in the final game are from the football wasteland located WEST of the Mississippi?

Don't let that crap bother you, Z.

One thing about a UNI/Montana champ game is that, for the first time in years, there will be a measure of civility among fans on both sides.

It doesn't "bother" me....in fact I find it kind of humorous. The holier-than-thou-we-play-real-football folks on the East side keep me in stitches most of the time...

In past years we weren't so much keeping you in stitches as keeping you out of the NC game......

Sorry, I was stuck in a staff meeting...

I'm not going to lose one second of sleep if the two teams from West of the Mississippi end up in the NC...

Most of my stuff has been in reaction to the BYU-lite (courtesy of Cap'n  ) crap that's been posted here...

Let's look at facts...50% of FCS schools are from west of a line drawn through eastern Ohio...YSU basically is the western most school on the east side of that line...ASU almost doesn't make it...

So, if you want to use the Mississippi as the demarcation line for east-west...less that 30% of FCS is in the west...

So, really...it's us eastern teams who should be complaining that the committee gave too many slots in the tourney to teams from west of the Mississippi...

Id Est, the tourney was very fairly selected...western teams have nothing to bitch about...and if eastern teams don't win, they have nothing to bitch about...

Anyway, JMU is gonna win it all, playing Richmond in the NC...

Texas State, Montana, Weber Cal Poly, UNI = 5/16 = 31%. Which means, it's as close to a perfect distribution as you're gonna get. And funny, but if the 50% line goes through Youngstown, then there' STILL only 7/16 teams from West of THAT line (adding in EKU and SIU). You can stop feeling "screwed" now.

It wasn't so much about WHAT teams were selected, but how they're bracketed. But, with Montana going to the semifinal game, I'm over that now...

Ya know, T...I agree with you on the bracketing...but since the NCAA is paying the freight, regionalization is going to remain with us for the forseeable future...

Unless we can figure out a way for some deep pockets to put up the $$$...and can get the NCAA to simply seed all the teams then go 1 - 16, 2-15, etc...I don't know what to do...

and in, what, 2010, when the field expands...the complaints will expand too...

No, you're pretty much right on...math isn't my forte, but the committee did get it correct...just the regionalization thing screws it up in some people's minds...and I won't argue that point...

AZ, he is just a little upset that the entire CAA didn't get bids.

I made an FCS teams map a few weeks in Google Maps. Still a work in progress, but it really is amazing to see the disparity between all the teams littering the east coast compared to the west.

I don't know why, but THAT map makes it look so much worse than the one Col. posted...

That, sir, I one outstanding product...my compliments...

I use GIS at work (I'm not great with it, but the best in my office), and I create stuff like that on a regular basis...

I know how much work goes into it...you say it's a work in progress...

May I suggest that you contact Chris and have him put a link to this somewhere on this site...

it's the 3 dimensional aspect of the balloons that makes it look so stacked on top of each other. Now if we can just get Mounty to put a little helmet in all the balloons then we'll really have something vibrant to look at and go "HOLY SHIT!"

I think the FCS map you have is linked here already but Mountaineers would be a great addition to it. I think I saw the other one in the FCS Stadium database or something like that.

Thanks Col, I appreciate it. I wish I could afford a copy of ArcGIS for personal use (had a student copy at home while at ASU). I'd be able to spin out some wicked FCS analyses with Spatial Analyst  GIS, map, and geography talk in general gets me excited (was my major afterall). :?

Tried it already and the results were less than desired. The Helmet Project helmets are on solid white backgrounds that overlap something awful on the map when zoomed out (I'm big on aesthetics :D ). I don't have the time to erase the white from all 120+ helmets. I also tried it with the MG's Helmets and they're way too big. So I shrunk them down for a test and the text and image became so muddled I've decided to stick with the balloons for now. I do have the Helmet Project samples in the info box when each ballon is clicked on though. :P

This is probably not the thread to ask this question in, but I will anyway. Why is San Diego in the Pioneer? One would think they, and the rest of the Pioneer would save a ton of money on flights, if they were to just move to the Great West. Thoughts?

If you still have my email then send me the Big Sky and the SoCon Helmets and tell me what you need done and I'll lend a hand and work on a few conferences for ya. If you don't have my email I'll pm it to you. I assume the white can be erased in paint, if this isn't correct then let me know. There's enough of us on here with a little acumen that we could help you complete the thing.
