NFL Draft Tidbits- Updated on Taiwan Jones/Pro Day Notes

Post by SmallCollegeFBFan »

Here are a few notes from around the league.

Delaware SS Anthony Bratton might have gotten himself drafted at his pro day with the following results: 6001 HT, 213 WT, 4.50/4.54 40, 4.09 short shuttle, 6.70 3-cone, 37-inch VJ, 10'5 Broad Jump, 15 reps, and 32 1/4 arms.

Delaware QB Pat Devlin did not look good throwing the ball and was actually late throwing. Not saying he won't get drafted but I could see him going undrafted or in the 7th round. He won't go higher than the mid 5th round from what I'm hearing.

App State FS Mark LeGree has a private workout with the Ravens on March 29th. I'm thinking 5th or 6th round but if he runs at ASU's pro day and clocks sub 4.5s I would say 4th is possible.

Citadel CB Cortez Allen had a private workout with the Patriots recently.

EWU RB Taiwan Jones will hold a private workout for all 32 NFL teams on April 14th at 11am at Los Modanos College.

Portland State TE Julius Thomas had a great pro day where he worked out for two position coaches and was 6043, 248 pounds. His 4.64-4.68 hand times in the 40 from the Combine and his workouts have folks buzzing. I'm hearing 4th-5th round.

Central Arkansas DE Markell Carter is projected as an OLB in a 3-4 scheme and mostly 3-4 teams have him as a late round possibility. He ran in the 4.79-4.84 range at his pro day and I'm told is likely a PFA.

Fordham S Isaiah Abdul-Quddus ran a 4.41 at Fordham's pro day from what I heard and could go in the late rounds now.

Wofford S Tommy Irvin is running in the 4.70 range at pro days and projects as a box safety. Strong kid who benched 20 reps.

I would be surprised if DJ Smith is drafted. Buzz on him is not good. He's the only SoCon player at the Combine whom scouts are telling me should not get drafted.

We had heard the same intially about Pat. That he had a terrible day, that he showed up late, that scouts left early. Then as the day went on it was mainly from bloggers that he didn't do well. His recievers had exams so it started late. There are some teams that are very, very high on him. He actually had a very good day throwing the deep routes which is what he needed. He's a project, and not NFL starter ready, but teams likle the Jets and Bengals have been all over him and were conducting part of his work out. He's got 3 private work outs next week. I'm hearing between 3rd-5th rounds. This is what Mayock had to say. Unlike most of the bloggers, I trust him and since the scouts can't say anything to tip their hands, I go by Mayock.

"Every once in a while you can see the ball come out kind of funny," said Mike Mayock, the NFL Network's draft chief who attended the workout. "To me, it's usually an indication of a spread quarterback whose footwork hasn't caught up with his arm work yet."

But, Mayock added, Devlin's workout Tuesday showed his improvement since the end of Delaware's season.

"[Tuesday] was kind of an important day for him," Mayock said, "and I thought as the workout went on and he got more and more of a comfort level -- both with his throws and his receivers -- I thought what he showed was more than enough arm strength to compete at the next level. And I thought the big thing was that his accuracy improved as the day went on also."

You have to love how the misinformation from one blogger can go viral in a matter of hours. The whole "Devlin was late to his pro day" mistake from that one guy has shown up everywhere. Doesn't matter what you know, just matters how fast you can share it with the world. :ohno:

At Montana's pro day, rb Reynolds, safety Stoll and safety Wilson looked good, according to a newspaper article and quotes from a Griz coach who was formerly a long-time NFL scout. Reynolds, who is still recovering from a shoulder injury, ran 4.58. Wilson ran 4.51 and had 18 reps. He showed terrific hands in the drills that involved passing. He weighed 193. The weather and wind conditions, and field conditions, were not good. It's my understanding that some time adjustments will be made for those conditions. Wilson had been running under 4.5 in training runs. About a dozen scouts from 9 or 10 teams were there.

Wilson was the kid accussed of murder right? I read an article a few months back that said a bunch of teams, including the Jets were interested in him as a special Teamer.

I was told by someone there he wasn't late to the workout but late throwing the ball. That a couple teams left because they were behind in getting him throwing routes. So I wrote it wrong for sure. I definitely meant to say that he was late throwing passes not late as in getting to the field late.

I don't see anyone drafting Wilson because of the jail time and the fact he is older but someone might give him a tryout or contract. I don't think many teams will look to bring him in but someone could because of his workout.

I assume Wilson wouldn't be drafted, but I do think it's conceivable based on what I've heard and on his pro day workout. Why would the jail time, for something he was completely acquitted for, be a significant factor? Just curious. Wilson is 24. Won't be 25 until July 30. Why would being 24 be held against him? Scouts from certain teams showed alot of interest in him during the season, and they were certainly talking to him during and after the pro day activities. He's a good cover guy and good hitter. While he may not quite have corner speed, he has safety speed. He was a corner for UM, but started playing both corner and safety this past season, and then played only safety after an injury to a safety later in the season. I think he had 18 tackles in his first start at safety. He has very good hands and you would not want to be hit by him.

You know alot more about this than I do, but I seem to recall that you and I disagreed on Mariani last year (and he turned out okay).

We disagreed on his 40 not that he would be good. I liked him and he knew that but I said he would not run low 4.4s and he didn't. I said he would be a late round or PFA and he was a late rounder.

I admit I was surprised he was so good as a rookie but I never said he couldn't be good. I had a 5th round grade on Mariani but had him as a projected 7th-PFA as far as where he would go.

Hopefully he continues his rookie success because as we all know it's what you do over the long haul not just one year but he is certainly on track to do better than myself and all the teams thought he would. If they thought he would be a Pro Bowler as a rookie he would have been a 2nd round pick not a 6th round pick.

All I'm saying is that he is a year older than most seniors and does have that baggage. Remember that rules are different for small school guys compared to SEC guys. If he played at Florida he would be given the benefit of the doubt more than he will from Montana. I think he's a good player but would be shocked if he got drafted.

You just don't see many small schoolers drafted who have been arrested unless they are considered to have top 100 talent. With that said, I don't think he gets drafted but he could make a roster.

And to expand on Devlin comments I heard a lot of the same things from scouts at the pro day that Devlin did not have a great day and is more of a late rounder. I put more stock into what scouts say than what a beat writer says, not knocking the folks at Delaware Online, I just know that scouts are better evaluators because it's what they do. Remember that Matt Millen was a radio guy and Marty Hurney was a beat writer before they were GMs. Millen got fired because he led his team to the #1 pick and Hurney has the #1 pick this year and could be on his final leg if they don't win.

They have a full list of players at nfl.com. You would have to search by school on there and it shouldn't take but 20 or 30 minutes to do. There are a good bit. I know Montana has Mariani, Schillinger, Biermann off the top of my head.

As of last season, Montana had:

Titans - Mariani
Dolphins - Carpenter, Hilliard and Proctor
Falcons - Biermann and Schillinger
Eagles - Anderson
Stealers - Harris (injured reserve)
Bears - Horn (practice squad)

All but Proctor and Horn grew up in Montana. The total population of the towns that Mariani, Biermann, Schillinger and Harris grew up in is under 25,000. Those 4 are from southeastern (3) and northcentral (1) Montana. Mariani and Anderson were walk-ons. Harris and Horn are Native American. Another guy plays in the CFL (Bergquist).

Nice, although for a BROKEN record of 13 straight BSC titles, u guys should have more guys in the League.

In an article entitled "Wilson leads Montana with strong pro day", Gil Brandt said the following on nfl.com:

"Montana held its pro day Monday outdoors on FieldTurf with 10 teams present to watch the seven players who worked out.

No doubt, DB James Wilson has the athletic talent to be an NFL player. Wilson (5-foot-11, 193 pounds) ran 4.52 and 4.49 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 4.28 in the short shuttle and 6.83 in the 3-cone drill. He also had a 9-11 broad jump and a 35-inch vertical to go along with 19 bench-press repetitions at 225 pounds.

Now, he had a very good workout. But Wilson was jailed for two years until he was acquitted of murder in a 2007 shooting, which will probably keep him from being drafted. So if he gets a chance as an undrafted free agent, his success will depend on his ability to stay out of trouble."

SmallCollege, why do teams fly some players to their city at this time of the year? I'm sure they want to work them out and talk to them in person, but what level of interest are they showing (or not showing)?

Small college FB I wonder if my guy WR Ricardo Lockette(Fort Valley St)Division II has made any type of progress at playing WR it was said he had poor hands and didn't run proper routes for someone with his size (6'3" 210) and speed (4.35).I hope he's working on these areas of need obviously and hopefully that TE I think you told me about will get some looks from the NFL as you said he led the team in receptions and yards.Hope to see both of these guys on sunday playing. As stated before Lockette reminds me of a young Jimmy Smith ex-Jacksonville WR only much faster from Jackson State University.

Here's why I don't think Lockette is a NFL guy. That TE you hope gets NFL looks is 6'1 1/4, 212 pounds and ran a 4.94 and 5.02 for NFL scouts this spring. He won't get any looks and if he was their best receiver then that tells you Lockette doesn't use his athletic ability well. Lockette is a track star but not a football player IMO. He also failed a drug test at the NCAA Championships which leads me to believe he is only that good in track because of the performance enhancers he was busted for.

SmallCollegeFBFan, I just wanted to bring attention to Deron Mayo from ODU. He's getting a lot of looks lately from NFL scouts. Mayo is putting up some great numbers...38'' vertical leap, 4.35 40-yard dash, and 28 reps (225 lbs) at UVA's pro-day. His only downside is his height at 5' 10.5''. He'll be part of Hampton's pro-day this week as well.

Anyways, he's someone flying under the radar to keep an eye out on.
