FBS transfers to FCS

Post by bandl »

Why do FBS transfers to FCS carry such a stigma to some posters here?

Don't you want the best possible players playing for your school?

Why is a school like, say Delaware, considered tainted because their last 34 QBs have been transfers?

Honest question...personally I think it's great when transfers leave FCS for FBS, as it usually improves the quality of play down here...

I think alot of people think that FBS kids transfer becuase they're either (a) trouble or (b) overrated.

Both are true to some extent, but there are also a huge % of FBS-FCS transfers that just want to start over and don't want to sit a year (e.g. Devlin, Mitchell, etc....).

If (a)....so what (to an extent)? Everyone deserves a second chance. Albeit maybe not after a murder  but if they just got caught drinking :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o , then so what.

If (b)...I think that usually means they were overrated as it relates to the FCS program....but the kid would probably end up being a steal for most FBS programs.

What about (c)...kid transferred because he was playing behind a stellar QB and wanted some actual playing time?

What about (d)...kid transferred because he simply didn't like the FCS school?

There are quite a few reasons a kid transfers: academics, behind a newly named starter, coach wasn't the same guy who recruited him, homesick.... heck UD even had one that said he was just sick of losing, had graduated and just wanted to play for a winner with his final year of eligiblity (Shawn Johnson from Duke).

Until the rule changes, any program that shuns transfers is hurting themselves on the football field.

Dammit Hen! You're not the kinda poster I'm going after... 8-)

What say ye, people? Why are transfers, and the programs that accept them, so evil?

Is it envy? The fact that some schools get more transfers than others?

I don't have a problem with it.

It just gets annoying when FCS fans brag about and get overly excited some unproven guy... just because rivals gave him a few stars or because an FBS school deemed him worthy of a scholarship.

Not evil, but if a kid gets recruited your school and the program develops the talent throughout the entire process both in the weight room and on the field, it seems like a much more rewarding process for all involved. Something like 80% of this year's team were kids recruited from within the state of Washington which is also something to hang your hat on.

Don't get me wrong, we've had our share of stars that were transfers. It's not a bad thing, just not as good.

Whether they transfer in to our school from a high school or another university, it doesn't matter to me. Once they put on our blue and gold, they're Hens. :thumb:

So 80% of the kids on your team weren't good enough for Washington and Washington State?
Are you ashamed of the 20% that are out-of-staters?

That is a cool stat, but as I said to Mrs89 on Friday night, when she noticed that most of your players were from Washington... some of your players from Washington were probably 2x as far from Cheney as all the kids UD gets from Maryland, PA and NJ. ;)

It's like taking the left overs and turning them into something delicious the next day.

So what's the difference between leftovers and the original dish? Original pizza hot out of the oven is great, but so is cold leftover pizza right out of the fridge!!!

Fuck I'm hungry now.

I agree with you on this one, so no one will be getting fucked as far as this part of the conversation is concerned.
But I'm not talking about diarhea casserole (aka Chicago-style pizza)...I'm talkin' 'bout regular pizza!

Regardless, cheese is always better melted, so I disagree with your original point about cold leftover pizza right out of the fridge as being great. But everyone also knows that North Dakota farm boys of scandihoovian descent make for more physical lineman...unless they're transfers.

For the Ivies, they ban transfers because they hamper the playing ability of the other players, who were recruited as freshmen. But in the 2000's, transfers such as Clifton Dawson shined not just in the Ivies, but in the FCS world as well.
All the Ivy League needs to become relevant again is to diversify its OOC schedule.

I don't think they ban transfers in the Ivy league. Didn't Harvard have a kid who transferred from Harvard to LSU and back again playing QB this year?

It really depends on who the drop-down is. Some turn out great (i.e. Flacco). Others turn out to be a bust (just ask Montana). Sorta like #1 draft picks. (Are you gonna get Peyton Manning or Sam Bowie?)

Everyone will likely get some of each. But if you're picking up a preponderance of drop-down busts, you've gotta start looking at your evaluation process. FBS drop-downs are NOT a panacea by any stretch.

For boom & bust you need look no further than UD. Sandwiched in between Flacco amd Devlin was Ohio State phenom Robby Schoenhoft.

Have to agree. In the years I've followed TXST we had 1 FBS QB, and that was Nealy. I'd say that was great. Not a habit, so far, for TXST to have an FBS tranny start at QB. The guy that came over in 2010 from UTEP, never played a down....he quit. Most of the ones that have come to the SLC got starter jobs but it didn't help their teams.
I have no problem with FBSers coming our way (FCS). I think most of ours have been other skilled guys or D, though, and have been decent to good. Our best one in 6 yrs (F. Evans) is with the Vikings.
The guy in my newest avatar came in from Iowa St. He's from Beaumont and just wanted closer to home.
The slot guy we have from Navy is from Carrollton (near Dallas). He got caught smokin'
I'd rather take position guys than QBs because I've seen the busts most of them have been in the SLC. (meaning, even if they put up numbers, it did nothing for the teams' w/l)
