Southern Conference Prognostications--Halfway Point

Post by youngterrier »

With the current standings being:

App 4-0 6-0
Wofford 3-0 5-1
Chatty 3-1 4-2
Furman 2-1 4-2
GSU 1-2 3-3
Elon 1-2 2-4
Samford 1-3 3-4
WCU 1-3 2-5
Citadel 0-4 2-5

I believe that:

App and Wofford are in the driver's seat. If Chatty, Furman, Georgia Southern lose again they will probably not be in the playoffs. Elon is already out of it, I think, but if they lose to Wofford this week that should put the final nail in the coffin. They will still give teams trouble. Samford is a officially a bottom 3 team. Western and the Citadel will probably not win another game this year. Furman will be lucky to win 7 games, they just haven't beaten anybody good. Chatty is a solid #3 now and the last game of the season could very well be a play-in game for the playoffs for them. I believe Wofford will beat Elon next week and cruise against The Citadel and Samford; the last 2 weeks will determine the conference championship.

Wofford @ App will be for the SoCon Championship. If it ends up like Halloween night 08 App is in good shape for home field throughout the playoffs.

We have to beat Elon first, then The Citadel, then Samford...not to mention beat Chatty afterward.

ASU vs Wofford in Boone on November 13 will be the defacto conference title game.
This week's UTC vs Furman game is essentially for 3rd place and a step towards the playoffs.
GSU will win a few more, Samford is up and down, Elon will be toast and reduced to spoiler role after Wofford beats them.
The Citadel will somehow pick up 2 conference wins leaving WCU as the lone cellar dweller again. You know yesterday's loss didn't even faze me. I listened to maybe a grand total of 10 minutes of the ball game and then turned it off. the constant losing is now something CAT nation expects on a weekly basis. I don't understand how El Cid lost to WCU. Almost wish they would the program down and call it quits. Listened to the ASU win over El Cid last night. ASU is so far ahead of everybody in the SoCon even down to the radio broadcast it isn't even funny. Gonna be fun when they go FBS.

Good luck to everybody next week. I will be in the comfort of my man cave with brats and beer watching WCU lose another game to ASU.

App vs Woffie for the conference and the winner will host at least one game...

FU vs Chatty for the other playoff spot... gotta say Chatty has come a long way in a short time as they are two plays from 6-0 and top 5 ranking.

Everybody else playing for whatever is left over...

GSU is a lock if they win out.

That requires beating Samford & Appalachian, and winning on the road at The Vermin.

I'm glad we play Wofford after El Cid and GSU and we have that game at home.

my post on terriefans:

If Wofford and Appalachian win this weekend, Elon, WCU, El Cid, and Samford will be mathematically eliminated from winning the SoCon and all of them will likely not make the playoffs. If Furman beats Chattanooga, Chattanooga will likely have to win the SoCon to make the playoffs which would require App losing 3 times (probably not going to happen). If Georgia Southern wins out they likely make the playoffs, as I believe every 8-3 GSU team has made the playoffs and they still have an outside chance at winning the conference. If they lose to App (or probably anybody) they will not have a chance at the conference championship and will probably not make the playoffs. Furman has a chance at making the playoffs but all their easy games are behind them with the exception of Western Carolina. If they lose to Chattanooga this week their chances get slimmer.

To win conference:
Wofford: wins out, we win conference. Same deal for App. Chatty: needs to win out and have us and someone else beat App. GSU: needs to win out, Wofford to lose 3 times, App to lose another game, and Chatty to lose 2 games. Furman: needs to win out, and Wofford to lose to someone. Elon: needs to win out, Georgia southern to lose one more game, and App to lose 3 games. Samford: needs to win out, Furman to lose 3 more, App to lose 3 more, Chatty to lose 3 more, and Elon lose 2 more (so chances are slim and none). Western: needs to win out, Wofford to lose out, Chattanooga to lose 3, App to lose 3, and Samford to lose one. Citadel: eliminated

I don't count on App losing 3 games this year, so that takes out Western, Samford, and Elon. I don't think Furman will lose less games than Wofford. I think Coach Monken is a great coach that has done a good job, but I think he will lose to App and Furman may give them trouble.

My money is on App, Wofford, or Chattanooga to win conference in that order. Chattanooga may make the playoffs if they lose to Wofford because they will lose to Auburn and that would put them at 7-4, losing to 3 top 10 teams close and a good FBS team

I really don't think that will help. It's like saying playing Navy will prepare you for Nevada or Oregon. Not to mention we may have a defense this year

Richard, don't you think Catamount fans get enought of this type crap posted from ASU fans without you just saying the same things they blabber? Does it make you feel like you are "one of them"?

It's a free country, you can feel and post anything you want to post, but I'd certainly be ashamed to post this type of garbage and still list myself as a "Fan of Western Carolina" I'm as dissapointed in the football fortunes of WCU as anyone, If you're that embarrassed by the Catamounts, just pick another team, we'll all understand. just saying......
