WAC Visit to TXST Could be 3 Weeks away

Senior Commissioner Jeff Hurd said WAC officials could make a visit to Texas State as early as the weekend of the Bobcats’ homecoming game Oct. 23 against Northwestern State.

“A (campus visit) schedule will be established roughly in the next 30-day period,” Hurd said. “It depends on our board of directors’ schedules, but the homecoming weekend at Texas State is possible.”

LOL Cat, I sympathize. After going to a couple of them super circus affairs called "bowl" football, I shudder to think how PSU could be sucked into throwing away money on this high risk venture. Might have better luck making money at the casino. But I do wish TXST well.

So you caught my overwhelming enthusiasm for the FBS system, eh? It's not just the Bowl games, I suppose. This year I am looking at making 8 of the 11 games...and if I can get someone to go with me, I may just make 9. I just can't get to Hammond and Lake Charles. How many games will I have to sit out year after year because I can't even come close to managing Utah, CA, HI, NM or wherever the hell else the team will have to travel to?
And it's not just Football either; right now I get to a large percentage of the Baseball games.

It's all very depressing.

Sorry CatMom. I haven't felt it in FCS football yet, but in other sports, there's no feeling like knowing that the games count towards something. What's the incentive when you're in a non-BCS conference? Finishing 6-6 and playing in the The Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg or Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (two real bowls BTW)? Give me playoffs ANY day.

And after all these years, I still don't know what teams are in the WAC other than Boise, Utah St, Nevada, Hawaii, and Fresno (three of which are leaving). The sad thing is that I'm not even sure I should be embarrassed about that.

Who cares that no one outside Virginia knows we play football? Our alumni like it, our fans like it, and the community likes it. As long as we enjoy what we have (the people actually involved with the school), I don't see what the issue is if no one outside the state knows about us.

Then why is it an issue that you don't know who's in the WAC? That was my only point.

I have a question for Catmom, other Texas State fans and any board member that wants to chime in.

Do you truly believe that moving up in football is a good move for Texas State?

The only reason I ask is because I recently had a conversation or tried to with a Texas State student who thinks this is a great move for Texas State. His reasoning was that by moving up it will guarantee a sell out for every home game, better athletes will come to play, better competition and more money. I tried to explain some things to him but he said I was just jealous because SFA wasn't moving up (on a side note he didn't even know Texas State qualified for the tournaments in all other sports and thought they were 1-AA in all sports).

Here is my opinion on there possible move up.

I personally think its a bad move. While the move up will bring better competition and money I just don't see Texas State being able to compete with other big time schools especially in Texas for the athletes. I see them becoming another FIU or ULL or a team along those lines. I don't think that Texas State has the consistent fan base to support a FBS football team. Just like SFA and other SLC teams there are a bunch of fair weather fans. If the team is winning yeah there will be a great crowd but if the team is losing its usually the die hards and the alumni. I just don't see Texas State having that fan base right now to carry over to the FBS level (this is from my experience. I grew up in Austin and knew about the SLC even before I went to SFA). Things may have changed since the last time I was down there 2006.

***sorry if this post comes off sounding like I'm a dick or bashing Texas State. That's not my intention. It's just my opinion.

Fans? Pull them apart and you get alumni who like football and go to most games win or lose, then you've got alumni who go to games if they win, then you've got everyone else who maybe loves the game regardless of who's playing. Heck, you could parse it a million different ways. Fact is, though, fans are only one small part of the financial equation of FBS play. And I keep running into the apparent fact that no more than 12 schools in the country make profit for their university. The rest lose money. Why are they losing it? Because apparently they think it makes them look more important. It' a bragging point. It helps them recruit more students. They get more media coverage. Is this going to give TXST more media? Probably. Will they recruit more students? Maybe. Will they be automatically a better university, academically speaking? Not likely; that comes from putting more money into academic programs. They're probably already as good academically as some of the WAC schools. So why join the WAC?

On this I would say we're already ahead of most, if not all of the WAC. TXST is behind only UT and Tech, for admission standards in TX, out of 35 Univeristies and Colleges in the state. And we have a better graduation rate, amongst student-athletes, than UT. Also to answer part of this, I would say that TXST was sitting on whoever came with an invite first. And given the current state of things I doubt any other conference would have thought twice about TXST. There's too many other FBS options for them to look at before us...as ready as TXST is, those other conferences were hunting for bigger game, or none at all.

Hey Hen...if you read any of this you would take note that I'm not on board with this but I have no choice. And you won't get rid of me that easily after it all happens. I'm going to keep my eye on the FCS cause I love the playoffs.

I didn't know where to put this, and I didn't wanna start a new thread, but is anyone watching the OSU/LA-Lafayette game on ESPN2? The attendance is pathetic. The middle of the stands is filled up and that's about it (still pretty loud though). It's just sad that they have an undefeated, nationally ranked opponent come into their stadium...the game is on national television in a nice prime time spot on ESPN2, and you can't fill the stands. Why is the Sunbelt an FBS conference again?

PS. Rajin' Cajuns? BEST NAME EVER!
