Initial thoughts on Hillsboro Stadium

Post by JALMOND »

I did attend the Idaho State/Portland State football game last night, held in virtually my backyard as the new home for the Vikings, Hillsboro Stadium, is only about 10-15 minutes from my house. I was really impressed with how the City of Hillsboro transformed the stadium into a suitable venue for FCS football. Myself and 5000 other fans watched PSU dismantle ISU from one side of the stadium. Some other interesting thoughts...

1. PSU gave the ISU team the side of the field with the crowd (and shade) at their backs. Seemed unusual as the home team is most of the time afforded this luxury. PSU has a VIP tent on their side that can house the VIP and distinguished alumni, but it still seemed odd.

2. Ample parking. Those who have attended PSU games in the past at PGE Park know that parking can be pretty limited and expensive (I usually ride on the MAX train). At Hillsboro Stadium, there is big lots both at the stadium and nearby where one can sit and tailgate before and after. Cost is $8 per carload (RV's are $60). However, alcohol is only allowed in the Viking Tailgate section at the center of the lot.

3. The PSU students were bussed in from campus. I don't know if there were any fees associated with this, but they did have the opportunity to ride to the game via Portland and Hillsboro school buses and enjoy the game from a special student section that looked pretty full and boisterous.

4. The view was open. Those used to PGE Park know that there, you are sitting in a deep hole with one end opened showcasing downtown Portland, the Oregonian building and the MAX train. At Hillsboro Stadium, you are greeted with an open air, level surface and the view shows the Sunset Highway with traffic buzzing along and a great view of the Portland West Hills.

5. Quite a bit of streamers and bunting advertising Portland State football, PSU athletics and the City of Hillsboro as you make your way to the stadium and even in the stands itself. In years past, as you walked even on the concourse at PGE Park, you wouldn't know if you were attending PSU football or a baseball/soccer game. Driving to the stadium, the casual fan knew there was something big going on at the stadium involving PSU.

Attendance was announced at 5025 for the game. Even with it being the first game this season, I'd give all those associated with the setup a definite :thumb: .
