All day long Tuesday, as the first few moments of a new football season unfolded, Southern football players trickled into the A.W. Mumford Fieldhouse.

Wednesday afternoon, Southern University formally kicked off its first preseason practice under new football coach Stump Mitchell.

Yes, for the first time since spring practice, the players all wore helmets and shorts. And yes, for the first time since spring practice, they worked as a loud, fiery coaching staff watched along.
