How many FBS transfers.....

Post by UCABEAR »

I have noticed that many threads have the subject line..FBS kid Transfers to "whatever" FCS school. My questions for FCS fans is "how many FBS transfers are on your team's roster right now?" and how many is typical for an FCS school? Living in Arkansas I see transfers from the SEC and various confrences go to local schools and recently quite a few, at least to me, to UCA.

Zane Allcorn LB 5-11 210 Jr. McKinney, Texas Ole Miss
Case Cooper P 5-10 182 Jr. Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Ole Miss
Stuart Gaddy DB 5-10 175 Jr. Fayetteville, Ark. Mississippi State
Jim Youngblood QB 6-2 225 So. Camden, Ark. Arkansas
Nathan Dick QB 6-4 230 Jr. Allen, Texas Arkansas
Anthony Summers LB 6-2 212 Sr. Olive Branch, Miss. Mississippi State
Jeremy Jester TE 6-3 252 So. Gatlinburg, Tenn. Tennessee
Rogeric Govan OL 6-4 285 So. Little Rock, Ark. Middle Tennessee State
Brad Jakel OL 6-3 280 Jr. Weston, Wis. Utah State
Jackie Hinton RB 5-10 195 So. Houston, Texas Houston

The reason I ask those questions is because coming from division II, it was a rarity to see that many transfers on the team. That's about 10% of the team roster! It doesn't mean that those kids were not good enough to stay in their conferences, some left for personal reasons or whatever, and it doesn't mean that their presence on the team will mean the team will be champions either. But it is fascinating to me to see so many from those conferences on one team. So what is the average number of transfers usually on a team? :geek:

Only two FBSers on App's roster:

16 Devin Radford RB 5-9 190 Sr. Fayetteville, N.C./E.E. Smith (Virginia Tech)
26 Dominick Magazu DB 6-0 190 Jr. Matthews, N.C./Providence (Boston College)

Another seven have transfered up from smaller schools (Greensboro College, Blinn College), military academies (Georgia Military College, Fork Union Military Academy) and a community college (Pearl River Community College).

PSU has ten on the roster who have transfered in over the last 2-3 years. Some have because they wanted to be closer to home. Others because they thought they'd have a better chance playing. A few because of disagreements with coaches. Only a very few are likely to turn out to be game-changers, whatever the hype.

I'm proud to say that Southeastern Louisiana has only one FBS transfer currently on the roster, and that's projected starting QB, Tyler Beatty, from Baylor...and he had three years of eligibility when he transferred prior to the '08 season.

Looks like we've also picked up R.J. Brown, 6-3, 310, OL, from Southern Miss, but he's a young man we recruited heavily out of JC a couple of years ago, and should come in and start right away at left guard...we may also pick up one or two more, but the bottom line is we've been able to build the last several years with primarily high school recruits. It took several recruiting cycles to wean ourselves off of transfers and hopefully we won't fall back into the trap of trying to find quick fixes. I don't mind taking a guy or two here and there to fill an immediate need, but loading up on other people's problems is not the way to build a program.

That was kind of a dig statement, slu. Wright doesn't take anyone that is another person's problem. All of our transfers chose to do so and chose TXST.
Williams, Hannan, Jackson and Alexander were immediate impact players and I am sure Curry will be also. Alexander and Williams both had medical redshirts so we're glad to have them for another year. The jury is still out on Curry, though. There are minor issues but we'll have to see how coach handles him. He won't put up with crap. He dismissed numerous players when he took over and he has sent several packing since.

There's nothing wrong with a kid that chose an FBS school (over an FCS) and finds he doesn't quite fit or made a wrong choice (isn't happy there) to transfer to an FCS.

Now how in the world did you take that as a "dig statement" at Texas State????? If my general comment hit too close to home, well...I'm sorry.

But, good for Brad Wright and the Bobcats!! I'm delighted to know he only accepts the good little angels, looking for better fits...I can assure you that is not the case at a lot of other places.

Furthermore, I never said there was anything wrong with taking FBS transfers, but loading up on them isn't a good way to build to a program IMHO. Filling a need here or there or taking a kid you recruited previously is one thing, but taking them in droves like we used to when we were starting out, and like some others have done, is a recipe for potential disaster.

Youngstown State
-Jake Johnson | LB | Virginia Tech - 13 tackles vs. Alabama last year
-Grant Mayes | CB | Syracuse - #1 CB in New Jersey out of HS
-Julian Harrell | WR | Miami (OH)

A few others that I am not sure of yet. I am told there are a few potential transfers in Youngstown as I speak. We may pick up a real big offensive transfer here soon that you guys will all be familiar with!

Delaware

-Ed Wagner | P/K | Michigan State
-Pat Devlin | QB | Penn State
-Josh Ulrich | DB | Navy
-Gino Gradkowski | OL | West Virginia
-Jordan Ottinger | P/K | Temple

So, I guess this means we at least don't have to hear any shit from UCA, TxSt, and Cal Poly fans?

Just because they transfer doesn't mean they are problems at their old school. Often times those are the players you hear about, but I would be less than 25% of the transfers are "problems".

I don't think UNI has any FBS, but I'll have to double check later today. I know we usually get quite a few JUCO guys from a couple of the Iowa JUCO's.

You won't hear any from me. That was the point of this whole thread. I wanted to know how many is usually acceptable for an FCS team. Plus I think as time wear on there will be less transfers to the Bears because it seems like the average on the board so far is about 4 or 5. :thumb:

Albany has Safety Rob Cervini, who scored a TD for Rutgers at the 2008 Papajohns Bowl.

Also a couple of FCS transfers from defunct programs.

I cant think of an FBS transfer on the NDSU roster. I might be wrong. We have a couple from the Jr. College ranks though. We do have a lot of guys that were being recruited by FBS schools. I imagine most FCS programs can say that?

Adding to the 17 or so players (transfers and CC kids)

From Clint Conque's Twitter:
We've added a pk/p from jc and 4 year qb transfer. Still recruiting several other players hs and transfers. Need 1more wr!
12:24pm, May 26 from txt
Wow! Ok.....I need some input on this from my fellow FCS fans..THAT seems like a TON of transfers  .....Can a program be built with that many? I know the optimal is to get high school kids and some transfers..but WOW!  This fan is really confused. :geek:
(In case you've forgotten the transfers, look at the very first post and add 9 Community college kids to it plus this post with 2 more!)

  I guess for this year at least recruit is spelled T-R-A-N-S-F-E-R.

We also signed 26 recruits. I think the last year's class had 25 seniors or something like that so there was a HUGE list to fill. But still......

*Point of clarity- Not all were transfers THIS year, some last year..but the overall number is big to this fan anyway.

Old Dominion has two FBS transfers and one FBS to JuCo. All seem to be very solid. We also have 16 JuCos to help spread out the classes. Hopefully we'll add one more FBS transfer this fall.

Portland State does usually pick up a good share of transfers from Oregon and Oregon State. Kids who, for whatever reason, believe that they would not get the playing time there. We've always had a good relationship with the coaching staffs from both schools that a lot of kids are "recommended" to us (told maybe to consider us in transferring). Riley and the coaching staff at OSU have done a great job in assisting those who want to move elsewhere, to look at us first before some other programs.
