QB age.
No 2 QBs are the same. Hypothetically, though:
You have 2 QBs competing for the starting role in the upcoming season. In terms of everything that matters to you as the coach, they are a dead heat. Neither has college game experience. Only difference---one is a rising senior, the other a redshirt freshman. Do you go with the senior, thinking that in case of major injury your program with be ok at the position the following season etc, or does the upside of a potential 4 year starter lead you to go with the younger player? Any thoughts?

The freshman, 4 year starter. If the rising senior didn't have what it takes during his first few years there to start, why would I think he has what it takes now? I'd rather put in the youngin' and let him learn from experience.green&gold75 wrote:No 2 QBs are the same. Hypothetically, though:

All other things being equal, I would absolutely go with the Freshman first.
Re: QB age.
Yep, go with the Freshman - worked out pretty good for Jerry Moore.
Re: QB age.
It depends on the team. If it’s a relatively young team, then the freshman. If it’s a team that’s prepared to make a playoff run then the senior.

I'll go with the freshman, you set a better foundation for the future and you won't have to worry about a new QB for the next season. All the best QB's at Southern (for what that's worth) have been guys that started early in their careers and developed to be a cornerstone of the team.

Re: QB age.
So what if you have a true Soph with game experience (even against a tough FBS team) and a RS freshman that ran your scout team last year? They have diff skill sets and you have a new OC that wants to run wildcats. The soph is great at wildcats and is a dual threat, the RS is untested but showed great stuff in spring drills?jcmanson wrote:If it’s a team that’s prepared to make a playoff run then the senior.
sorry for the late edit

True soph. A 1 year difference in eligibility isn't enough to make a difference to me.CatMom wrote:So what if you have a true Soph with game experience (even against a tough FBS team) and a RS freshman that ran your scout team last year? Re: QB age.
OOPs, my bad, the soph is a RS soph, not a true soph (was thinking of one of our RBs)

Either way, he's still got only 1 less year of eligibility than a RS freshman.CatMom wrote:OOPs, my bad, the soph is a RS soph, not a true soph (was thinking of one of our RBs)

I go with the senior. I generally don't trust youngsters to have the maturity to handle the job. Occasionally, a kid will prove me wrong. But until proven otherwise, I go with age.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

75 - Was Archer competing against a RS freshman this past year? The Tribe obviously started Archer this year and they did well with him only starting as QB this past year. Just don't remember if he was competing against a RS Frosh for that spot.

I was about to post the same thing as SH did, but saw who posted it and decided to just not post and avoid the whole awkwardness of agreeing with they.

Where was his maturity the last 3 years? Like I said before, if he didn't have what it takes before (such as maturity), what makes you think he has it now?SuperHornet wrote:I go with the senior. What if he was stuck behind another 3-4 year starter?bandl wrote:Where was his maturity the last 3 years? In that case I would start the senior because he put his time in for the team.

Apparently that doesn't matter to G&G75.andy7171 wrote:What if he was stuck behind another 3-4 year starter?bandl wrote:

If he has no game experience, then he had to be stuck behind QBs on the depth chart.bandl wrote:Apparently that doesn't matter to G&G75.andy7171 wrote: What if he was stuck behind another 3-4 year starter?

Re: QB age.
It was only a matter of time before you went there.
The senior has a thicker skin from years of backing up and running the scout team. Start him, if he fails accepting the bench again won't hurt. Whereas if you start the freshamn and he fails, benching him might ruin him his next three years
If both fail, you'll be out of a job because of incometant recruiting.
