Untimed down at end of quarter?

Post by JayJ79 »

I know that the game/half can't end on a defensive penalty,
and I've seen untimed downs under those circumstances.

But last night at the UNI/WIU game, the refs called for an untimed down at the end of the 3rd quarter, after an OFFENSIVE holding call.

That just doesn't seem right to me. (it obviously didn't have any effect on the outcome of the game, but still)

Nevermind. I guess it is covered in the NCAA football rules. I just don't remember ever seeing that circumstance occuring before.
Extension of Periods
ARTICLE 3. a. A period shall be extended for an untimed down (other than
a try) if during a down in which time expires one or more of the following
occurs (A.R. 3-2-3-I-VIII):
1. A penalty is accepted for a live-ball foul(s) not treated as a dead-ball
foul (Exception: Rule 10-2-5-a). The period is not extended if the
statement of the penalty includes loss of down (A.R. 3-2-3-IX).

just think of it if it were outside with a 40MPH wind, that 1 untimed down in the same directipon could be huge, so yes it COULD be significant, just not in a dome against a team that lost to Indy Blue!
