First this / Next the world
- Big 10 Football - So boring Wisconsin is our most exciting team...
- Big 10 Football - Where 117th ranked Purdue is dominant...
- Big 10 Football - Where team speed and passing offense are not required...

Just wanted to say that ODU now owns the record for the best start for a first year FCS team. We beat Georgetown tonight 31-10 and are now 7-2 (still eligible for the playoffs :-p)!!!

Good deal. Any time CCU's name can be wiped out of a history book, the history book is better off because of it. (Although the flare-ups can be painful)...

Central Arkansas and Bryant are all tied for Best first season of DI at 7-4, it looks like ODU is going to blow that out of the water.

If we made the playoffs I can guarantee we will not be hungry, because any team we play in the playoffs will hand us our lunch on every play.

That'll never happen. There's only 5 or so ODU posters on here, there were about 500 Bison posters that invaded while still in transition. ODU's gonna really have to step it up in terms of annoyance if you want of the snide. :coffee:

ODU posters, while showing potential, have a long way to go to even top the San Diego dorks of a few years ago...

Cannot wait to hopefully start a football rivalry with you guys. You dismantled Presby, and we struggled with them for 3 quarters (arguably our worst showing of the year.....)

Also am travelling to Lynchburg (funny how I always have "business" in areas where ODU is playing...) for the return game of Bracketbusters. Your fans showed up very well in Norfolk last year, and helped create a great atmosphere - we played very well that afternoon. Not sure what to expect this year, with Curry and your coach gone, but have always respected the way your fans support your programs.

Old Dominion fans are active on two boards. If you want, we can herd them here. But trust me, you don't want that. While the record (7-2) looks good, the strength of schedule is extremely weak, thus making it difficult to determine how good we actually are. So there is no point in arguing it.

Be assured that we are another program that will get into the Top 25 mix. We will be fully scholarshipped, have the number 4 attendance in the world of FCS football, and now have control of a recruiting hotbed. We will annoy you in due time.

Your losses will tell you exactly how good you are, IMO.

Loses to middle-of-the-road teams, in middle to low conferences.

I don't think you have control of any hotbeds. You are simply located near one and have a lot of scholarships to give. Don't get penisy on us.

True. But like the fact that wins and losses don't always indicate how good a team REALLY is, our first three games against DI opponents were all very close (we managed to win one of them), and came down to the last possession. But these were also earlier in the season where we still did not have all of our offense and defense in. We were also trying to figure out who our "go to" players are. We now have a better idea and more options on offense and defense.

That said, I could also accept the argument that there was not much game film available then also. With so many players seeing the field in those early games, it was difficult to pick up on tendencies.

If we lose the VMI game on Nov 21, I believe that will give us a good indication. If we win, we will be in the same position we're in now, wondering just how good we really are. But we are talking about a very wide range of something like #50 to #150. The Nolan Power Index has been given us the highest ranking the last few weeks and we are currently #35. But that is ridiculous.

Yeah, LU/ODU should be good stuff. I just hope all the LU kids from that area don't defect. They do it for Tech, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did for ODU...

And the basketball team will be a lot different. We'll actually play defense, and we'll have a more balanced offense. Losing Curry may have been a blessing in disguise in terms of the program actually growing. We're bringing in really good recruits, and should have a good program going for the next few years. This year might have some growing pains, tho.

Beating VMI, will if anything, solidify your spot as being in the middle of a mid-to-low level conference. Which would put you in the top 100, but not in the top 50. You've got losess to two teams that aren't in the top 50 of FCS. VMI falls way below both Fordham and Monmouth.

Massey's comparison ratings have you at 88. http://www.masseyratings.com/cf/compare1aa.htm

I don't like computers, but this gives you a pretty decent idea of your national spot.

Right now I don't care where we are in the world of FCS. The only thing that matters to me is we are IN the world of FCS, which is different from where we were a year ago - on the outside looking in.

Our football experience is not 10 games old, and our FCS experience is not yet 8 games old. There will be plenty of time for posturing for position later. Right now, all we want is to get our guys ready to play higher level FCS football.

But I will admit that 7-2 looks nice. 8-)

ODU does not have a lock on football recruiting in SE Va... VT has a lock on SE Va, UVA lives on the scraps and JMU/ODU/W&M fight over the left overs...ODU will get their share of those that are very good but looked over by VT as will JMU and W&M...JMU needs to hire an assistant coach well connected in SE VA...we had one that moved on to VT recently.

D1A start-ups at JMU/ODU would make recruiting VA interesting...

Its real funny how posters on this board and the CAAzone are "calling out" ODU fans for their excitement over the success of this first season. I can somewhat understand how that could get old, but to say ODU fans are asserting some sort of playoff right or FCS dominance is just plain untrue.

Most of us are very realistic about our current team and the steps up required to compete in the CAA in 2011. I really like the way we scheduled....good for the fans, (and more importantly) good for the kids in the program. We have no delusion about of schedule, other than the wish that we would have caught MU and FU later in the year (I think the outcomes may have been different).

The fact that some of you on here and the zone are attributing some false assertions of football dominance to ODU fans is pretty sad. However, such deceitful behavior would make a great resume for such high quality organizations as moveon.org or ACORN.

And for the record, ODU will struggle in 2011 with a full CAA slate, but will pick up a win or two.

You are absolutely correct about VT. I was talking about recruiting the IA leftovers. I really believe JMU will have trouble in the 757 going forward. W&M will continue to recruit in the area and we will likely lose out to those specific targets because of academics unless a certain major is sought that W&M does not have (i.e. engineering, etc.). But that is typically a very small number. I think that if you look at the full scholarship FCS programs going forward, ODU will have a large percentage of the recruits from SE Va.

I have no doubt that JMU will lose some HR recruits to ODU (I think we've lost a HR recruit to just about everybody in the CAA...); but what advantage, other than proximity, does ODU have over JMU? We're showing a tradition of winning (this year notwithstanding), have a national championship and will soon have equal to or better facilities than ODU.

You should also be aware that VA schools aren't the only ones who recruit down there. I'm pretty sure I heard at least one UD player from Hampton Roads last weekend. People aren't going to stop recruiting the area because ODU's down there. It's just another name in the pot.

And I wouldn't necessarily agree that a large percentage of SE VA recruits is what you want. There's only so much to go around of leftovers. If you look at JMU's roster you can see that a little hit in our recruiting down there won't be a significant blow to the team. I think we'll still win a lot of No. Va battles and MM has done a good job of cherry picking in the northeast too (NJ and Penn.).
