How can you kick out a team that according to SuperHornet is not only going to win the Big Sky this year but also the National Championship.ajwildcat wrote:I would love to see SUU in the Big Sky, there is honestly no reason they shouldn't already be in. Agree and as far as I know or have heard the facilities at Sac are much more acclimated to the upgrade of a conference than SUU's are. SUU has pretty good facilities... Their basketball stadium, the Centrum, would be the second or third best stadium in the Sky (after the Dee and Dahlberg ). Their football field isn't great, but its a hell of a lot better than Eastern Washingtons. That is the worst field in the Sky. It's like playing at a high school.
I still have no idea how Sac State got into the BSC...

I am wondering about the SUU facilities because my buddy was down there working for about a year and he said that everything about that town is bad as far as football goes. He said he couldn't go to a bar to find a single freaking game being shown and there was no interest by people to even try and put a Griz game on for him even when he gave the coordinates for the satellite. He said that the interest in the local program is absolutely pathetic even on game days and that the field is horrible and the stadium was worse than most high school stadiums. From his point of view the place is miles away from being a good place to go and see a football game even if you leave the stadium out of it.
Basketball may be a different story...

Re: Big Sky Expansion
Eccles Coliseum is OK AT BEST.
+It holds about 5k in reality.
+The endzone/visitor seating is a joke.
+Southern is a historically bad team
+I will say to SUU's credit, the surrounding area of the stadium DOES give you a Coliseum feel. But they need a major upgrade to compete in the Conference.
+Sac St. believe it or not (just like Idaho state) has awesome talent, simply coached poorly.
+Sac St's stadium is 17k, and Its a great place to play.
+Sac St just did some improvments to locker rooms, parking garage ect

Its a little early to say about Sac State's coach. He's only been there a year if I'm not mistaken. They've been steadiy improving. Didn't Sac State come in about the time PSU did, or a little earlier? Big Sky wanted to reach out to the Northwest coast, where Sac State arguably sits on the edge.

Re: Big Sky Expansion
Sac State came in at the same time as Cal-St Northridge came into the conference, I believe shortly after Eastern Washington (before Portland State). Both Sac State and Northridge were added to establish the conference in California (primarily the Sacramento area in NoCal and Northridge in SoCal/Los Angeles). Northridge was getting no support in the saturated Los Angeles area so they dropped football to concentrate on basketball (they left the conference for the Big West), but Sacramento is still supportive of the conference.frinq wrote:Its a little early to say about Sac State's coach. Re: Big Sky Expansion
CS Northridge, CS Sac and PSU all joined in 1996, replacing BSU and Idaho which left in '96 and Nevada, which left in '92. What a trade that was....
SUU's attendance for the Youngstown St. game was 1714, a team that has only won 4 NCs. Half were probably from YSU. SUU even won and no one in town noticed. Just what most conferences are looking for. The BSC has enough of those programs already.

Re: Big Sky Expansion
If I am not mistaken, when SUU played Youngstown it was in a downpour of rain. Granted the people of Cedar, St. George, and the rest of southern Utah need to do a better job of getting out and supporting football, but it's about to change. SUU is the only D1 program between UNLV and BYU on I-15. St. George, Cedar City, and the surrounding areas have been estimated to be at nearly 1 million people in the future. The area is growing immensely even w/ the economy the way it is. When the economy picks up, the area will boom. SUU, with the potential of growth, the excellent coaching that is in place, and the administration that has taken over, is about to be one of the premier FCS programs in the country. May sound funny to some, but I truly do think there is a real possibility of comparing it to a program like Texas St., who they seem to play every year now. SUU would be a great asset to any conference. I myself, would love to see it stay where it is for the time being, and when it finally does grow into a force, ignore the BSC, and potentially jump to a newly formed, restored FBS Southwestern Conference, which a lot of people on the net have dicsussed.

Drove through Cedar City a couple weeks ago. Nice little 'burg. Reminded me a little of Missoula. I can NOT, however, in any way, shape or form, see the "surrounding area" with a MILLION people in my lifetime. If by "future" you mean "50 years", then maybe so. But not in the next 25. Or, if by "surrounding area" you're including the area from SLC to Vegas, then sure.TBirdz wrote:If I am not mistaken, when SUU played Youngstown it was in a downpour of rain. Sounds crazy to me as well, but there are publications on the web that estimate in the next 25 years there will be 750K people in Iron (Cedar City) and Washington (St. George) counties. I was probably being a bit too liberal in my figures in my first post. Last time I was down there it seems that the two cities are building and growing in the direction of one another.

Oh, they definitely are, and both are becoming burgeoning retirement villas, but I can't see drawing a million folks down there.

By no means at all do I think SUU is a national champ. contender right now. I am just suggesting that there is a ton of potential in the program. With the things I mentioned prior, I truly do think that SUU has the POTENTIAL to achieve that ELITE level. We will definitely see how far the program has come this year. We get to show off to S. Utah when we play Dixie the first game. We need to be competitive at San Diego St and Utah St, maybe even pulling off an upset. Take care of our nonconference games at home, maybe even getting a road win there, and winning the Great West.

SUU has averaged 1 win for what, 2004-2007? Last year they were almost .500 with a first year coach. Last time they went into the state of Montana they played the beloved Griz to a tight game and were within one play of winning at the "other" school in Montana. Key word: POTENTIAL!!!

Re: Big Sky Expansion
You gotta be shittin' me Pyle! You call a 46-10 game tight? We more than tripled your rushing yds., more than double the passing yds., and total yds. for the game. You didn't get your first points of the game until twom minutes were gone in the 4th qtr. and the score at that point was 39-0. You just made it over 200 yds. and we just barely missed 500. I am starting to see where you are coming from if you consider that a tight game. I'm glad to have you here Tbirdz but come on man lets deal with the facts and not go off into fantasy land here.TBirdz wrote:SUU has averaged 1 win for what, 2004-2007?
