Great post! I agree. I love some good banter. It makes the season fun. And I do agree, CSU's facilities are really bad. On paper, we should never be able to compete with Coastal or Citadel. But...we do. Mostly because of the area we recruit to. Charleston is a very fun city, with an overflow of gorgeous women, beaches, bars, just the perfect college town. Its an easy place to recruit to. So, CSU's 90 man roster...has 40-50 players that could play at Coastal or Citadel. That's why they can compete with those programs. That other 30-40 players on the roster...well, that's why CSU has overall losing records to Citadel and Coastal. They just don't have as much depth, so health has always been the Achilles heal there.Ibanez wrote:This thread has been epic. Listen, I love giving The Citadel, CSU, WCU, etc... any team really, some ****. Heck, Coastal is supposedly getting a TEAL TURF!? ARE YOU SERIOUS!? NOT ONLY DO WE HAVE A RIDICULOUS MASCOT, YOU'RE INSTALLING TEAL TURF!?! Oy vey!
But, I digress. The Citadel (one of my favorite schools) is hit or miss. I think they can have a solid team in the next few years. CSU has done surprisingly well but their facilities are joke and that is a huge factor in recruiting. What player wants to go to college and say, " My high school was way better than this."? VMI...VMI has always been a dreadful team to play. VMI hasn't had a winning season since 1981.
Coastal has gotten lucky with the allure of the beach, wealthy donors (Bob Brooks, TD Bank), some famous alum and a great start to a new program. We don't play FBS teams for money, b/c we don't need to. We've built an amazing following and program and it's caused schools like G-dubbs and Liberty to expand and improve. Coastal has been great for the Big South, but there's no talk of them leaving, not even for the SoCon.
I hope its true Coastal never leaves the Big South. Even though I hope CSU beats them 70-0, I have always had great respect for that team, its a GREAT natural rival for CSU being an hour/half away and on the coast. I do wish the Big South would expand to 8 teams though.
