Re: 9/1 Score Thread
UMass wins 24-16. It was actually a pretty good game, very competitive until about the 6-7 minute mark in the 4th quarter when UMass went up 24-9 on a Julian Tally TD reception. Don't know how good or bad Holy Cross is but I was impressed with UMass defense but not so much with their offense with the exception of Jonathan Hernandez who had about 150 yards rushing.

UC Davis is getting worked by Montana native Brock Osweiler. 13/18 for 191 and a TD.

I'm betting Nova drops off big this year. A good FCS team just doesn't get curb-stomped by a MAC, no matter what some MAC apologists might say.

Outside of WIU, I don't see who you finish a head of.MSUBear42 wrote:We won't finish last... I don't see us winning more than 5 games max, but we won't finish last.clenz wrote:WIU's offense looks TERRIBLE so far.

You have no QB with any experience, outside of a guy who moved from WR to QB this year. He has the most QB experience out of the bunch as he is 1-2 in his career. He is/was battle a rFr and a true Fr for the starting job.
That WR was one of your better WR that was returning. You may have 6 WR back, but with no QB to get them the ball they won't be able to do much. I
The best part of your offense is your runningback, who is pretty good I'll give you that. However I'm not sure your RB will be able to do much, nor will your QB have time, as you lost 4 offensive lineman that started all 11 games last year - including an AA.
That means you lost an NFL lineman, 3 other starting lineman, and a 4 year starting QB (who may have been the best in program history). You won't be better on offense this year than you were last.
On defense, last season you brought back 15 of the top 19 players on defense, and got WORSE on defense. This year you only bring back 4 of your top 13. That isn't good.
So, enlighten me. What am I missing about MSU? Amy I misled by the 9 returning starters from a 5 win team? Is replacing 4 offensive lineman and the best QB in program history easier to do than I think?
Re: 9/1 Score Thread
Some other thoughts of mine from the first day of games.
UNH...wow, they look to be very very bad this year. I had them at 11 in my poll, and I hate to hold FBS losses against teams when it comes to rankings, but that one was so bad they are going to be lucky to hang in there, if not dropping completely out of my poll.
WIU will be fighting to stay out of last place in the MVFC with that offense. There was zero time for the QB to make any type of play, and we he did have time he didn't look good. I figured there would be a drop with losing the conferences offensive player of the year, in QB Barr, and Defensive player of the year, but I didn't think it would be this dramatic. WIU only won 2 or 3 conference games each year from 04 to 07, and this year looks to be returning back to where they have been much of the last decade.
Villanova, much like UNH in my poll, will see some major drops. Again, I hate holding FBS losses against FCS teams, but to lose like that to a MAC team....wow. I didn't see the kind of drop that is apparently going to happen with them. They will be out of my poll this week.
Illinois State...like many I had/have high expectations for them this year. I thought/think they could challenge for a playoff spot due to their offense and if they could have found any sort of defense. I didn't think EIU was going to be good this year (I have them bottom half of the OVC) and with just watching that full game and not yet looking at the stats I have no confidence in that ISUr defense. EIU had to be close to, if not over, 300 yards passing and their WR were wide open on every single pass play that the QB had time to throw. EIU's offensive line looked pretty bad so the ISU pass rush got there at times but....wow. On the flip side ISU's offense looked about what I expected. Run game didn't blow me away...in fact outside of three big plays that run game was very unimpressive. The passing game looked good, as expected with Brown at QB. However, with that said EIU's defense shouldn't be that good this year. Oh....and EIU came away with the win.
Jacksonville State is a team, that despite the win, will fall in my poll. UTM absolutely controlled that entire game, and JSU didn't take the lead until 38 seconds left in the game - due mostly to UTM going into a prevent defense. Gee, an offense picking apart a defense that they had struggled with once the prevent starts....I've never watched that happen before. I had JSU at 9, and had very high expectations of them coming from the OVC, but I am second guessing that right now. Oh, and there is the fact that JSU's All Conference caliber QB went down something fierce in the game. I don't know exactly what happend as I had just switched back to this game from another game but he was on the sideline being held up by the trainer in a hug position in more pain than I remember seeing a football player in in a very long time. Murray State, and maybe UTM, might have jumped JSU for the conference race this year in my mind. UTM won't make the top 25, and neither will Murray State, but they both jumped to the top 5 out.

Nova lost a ton of talent to graduation. Anyone that voted them in their Top 15 was not doing their homework.
Off the top of my head: Whitney, Skeezer, the big black o-lineman with the weird name that got drafted early by the NFL, Jstclmt's kid at middle LB who was picked up by the Eagles... there are four marquee players gone and probably more I'm not recalling right away.

Re: 9/1 Score Thread
The Temple/VU and Toledo/UNH games, while disappointing, should not be a surprise. We could have had a bit better showing but Toledo and Temple look to be at the top of the MAC heap this year. Toledo has some really skilled guys but their schedules is a killer this year.
Good to see JSU comeback against UTM. They didn't look so hot, otherwise.
In spite of the score I thought Western looked good in spots. Tech is loaded on offense and should be fun to watch this year.
SFA had no business scheduling that game (unless there were some other 'relationships' between the two ...). They threw the ball 29 times in the 3rd qtr ...

Oh, PLEASE. I'm no fan of SoCon apologists, but that Ohio/Wofford game is NO comparison. That game was 17-10 midway through the 3rd quarter, whereas Nova was down 42-0 before a mercy-score late in the game.Go Lehigh TU Owl wrote:Last year, Ohio 33 #8 Wofford 10Pwns wrote:I'm betting Nova drops off big this year.
