Well then...Villanova it is...mostly due to their basketball prowess...as far as name recognition goes, nobody else in FCS is close! Try taking your blinders off for a second...it's pretty out here in the real world.

Thanks Hen. I've done that same analysis several times over the past 5 years.

who cares about comparing programs :ohno:. App certainly has made their mark as has GSU and Montana. The FCS needs more teams stepping up to promote this division, not continue mediocrity. I think it was appropriate to point out that Montana has been trying to find FBS games for the 2011 schedule. How many time has it been thrown out the Montana never plays up etc.etc.etc...? A sh!tload so when someone presents something concrete that the new coach wants to do exactly that but says they have been turned down several times lends credence to what posters here have said. Easier said than done out west.
‎"Born in other countries, yet believing you could be happy in this, our laws acknowledge, as they should do, your right to join us in society, conforming, as I doubt not you will do, to our established rules. That these rules shall be as equal as prudential considerations will admit, will certainly be the aim of our legislatures, general and particular." --Thomas Jefferson, letter to Hugh White, 1801

It's not the distance. $750,000 is about the minimum Montana could accept and break even by replacing a home game.

And when the athletic department is in constant financial trouble, every dollar counts.

Those are the stats I put together.. Montana is the team of this decade, without question.
You're certainly entitled to your opinion. :)

Were the Buffalo Bills the team of the early 90's?

Is Montana's fanbase egotistical? Yes. Is Appalachian's? Yes. Is any successful program's? Yes. Was Plufgrad, as a new head coach, speaking to his fanbases egotism in this article... yes, imo.

Is Plufgrad egotistical? I dont know... and I never said he was...

What I took away from this article is "Montana won't be playing any FBS teams anytime soon......." Next question.

From a financial stand-point, they don't need to. There can be some benefits to playing an FBS school in terms of media exposure and recruiting depending on how well your team competes, but on the flip side of that being blown-out won't help in that regard either. Schedule two of them in a year, and you are potentially scheduling yourself out of the play-offs unless you have a near-perfect season the rest of the way. EWU did this in 2008 by scheduling Colorado and Texas Tech in the same season. The pay-days were nice and we had a really solid showing in both games, but they were still 2 games in the "L" column.

Bottom line is that I think in the case of Montana the "cons" definitely outweigh the "pros". I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I truly don't believe that Florida is afraid to play Montana. That was a jab at the multitudes of posters that come out every year saying the Montana is afraid to play FBS schools. As stated by another poster, this article proves that Montana is trying to play FBS, but isn't getting any takers.

I do believe that there are some BCS programs out there that could pony up the cash, but don't want to play Montana. Two that come to mind are Washington State and University of Washington. Although UW should be much better this year than they have been, I still think they would be concerned about the possibilty of what could happen. I really doubt that MWC or WAC schools could offer us enough to make it worth while and I think most of them would prefer to not take the risk of scheduling us.

If the WAC or MWC schools were to do a home and home or a 2 for 1 deal I think the administration would go for it. I really doubt either of those conferences would go for it.

UW has also never played an FCS team (that changes this year), so scheduling a game with them was probably not possible up until now

EWU will play Washington in 2011, and Washington State in 2012. There is a push by the state to keep the money made from these sort of games in-state. Makes sense, I suppose.

 Virginia and South Carolina have both taken that approach. UVA is rotating through Richmond and W&M and USC is rotating through SCSt, Wofford, Furman and El Cid.
