It will probably be difficult for MAQA yahoos to overcome the Qult programming but they should give being rational & reasonable a try.

Kalmie is right on target with the last point - why go when you can watch it for free or a small fee online? It's the society we live in.

I like watching football in person. My problem was that I was was almost 5 hours from Cedar Falls and that made it difficult to go for a day trip. I still tried to make 1 game per year. If I was in Cedar Falls or Des Moines I would go to more games. In Portland I'm looking at Weber State and trying to figure out if I can make it there (approximately 10 hours away) for a game.

The real reason attendance is down? Cell reception in most stadiums sucks, which interferes with people's ability to snapchat and instragram and all that bullshit

edit: I guess they covered that. Reading before posting is hard.

This topic was actually addressed on Portland sports talk during the season, primarily regarding the Ducks and Beavers. The reasons came out as by not attending you 1) don't have to deal with traffic, 2) don't have to deal with parking, 3) don't have to deal with loud, obnoxious, rude (drunk) fans, and 4) can watch from the comfort of your living room or sports bar. Of course, not all FCS games are available on TV or streaming, but it is a situation that is coming. I think by 2050, the most preferred way to watch college football will be at a sports bar instead of live and that only a select few will actually attend the game.

I still feel there is something special about being at a game live... Maybe not for a lot of the FCS schools, but there is something electric about going to a MSU game, or a UM game... At MSU being in the stands as the flame throwers and fireworks go off, and the rodeo team rides the horses out onto the field while the team runs behind them, is pretty special... Video below isn't from a game the horses ran them out, but gets you a little idea. Sure you can watch from home, or a bar, but it just isn't the same...and never will be.

It's a lot easier, cheaper and more convenient to listen to your favorite musician/band's album at home on the stereo than to go to a concert.

(album, stereo - how's that for dating myself?)

Googles says Portland to Weber St roundtrip over 22 hrs/1470 miles. Instead of spending all that time on the road, maybe a couple hundred in gas (depending on what you drive and gas prices out west obviously) why not just fly Portland to Salt Lake for under $300 roundtrip, grab a rental, and make the 35 mile drive to Weber? You'd spend about 1/3 of the time airport/flying/short drive as you would the the long drive, would probably necessitate 1 less night in a hotel, so probably wouldn't spend that much more $$ overall.

Haven't seen a poll for college football fans as far as their preferences for watching games between live, home, sports bar. IMHOP home trumps a sports bar because at home you're paying a lot less $$ for food & drink, you don't have to worry about drinking and driving, with a DVR you can pause/rewind/fast forward through commercials, halftime, all the standing around BS, and watch your own replays. At home, I can watch a lot more football than I could at a sports bar. I rarely spend more than an hr+ watching a football game. To me, outside of being at the stadium, spending 3 to 3 1/2 hrs watching a game is silly.

My preferred ranking in order:
1. Live
2. At home
3. Sports bar

I could see the future being among the masses:
1. At home
2. Sports bar
3. Live

Nearly 40,000 expected for the next Bison game. 3.5 hours away from home, and on a MLB field. One of the few reasons I would venture into construction laden, traffic conjested, Minneapolis at this point. Normally it's me driving 3.5 hours to a Bison home game, and 3.5 hours home.

I’d flip 2 & 3. In a sports bar the cell service issue goes away. Plus You can watch multiple games simultaneously. You get a bit of the “crowd” feel without fighting 25k-60k people for parking, concessions, etc. Griz game days at Dukes in Scottsdale were a “must attend” event. Didn’t miss but a couple in 20+ years living in Scottsdale unless i was actually AT the game.
