He is the 4-star back we signed. I mean I am a realist and do not expect him to be astonishing his freshmen year, but by year 2-3-4, this kid will be a name everyone should know at this level. Now only if YSU can find a QB to get us over the hump.JBB wrote:Yea, he's good!

Re: Missouri Valley Football 2010 Thread
NDSU has their spring game today. Right now we have a bunch of very good running backs and good O line. The most exciting news on offense is the QB situation. We have a freshman Brock Jensen making some waves and might be in a position to start. We are also looking very good a WR. Im looking forward to watching the offense.
There are still questions on defense. There are a lot of returning players and some new faces. losing a starting D lineman to off field criminal behavior is a hurt. I wont bother with his name but he was among the MVC leaders in several categories. Our D line should be good though. We had bad luck at LB last year with injuries. If we stay healthy we should see improvement at that position.

end of 1st half. Lots and lots of passing. Its an explosive attack. Some dropped balls but overall good receivers and good QB play. Howard, one of the outstanding receivers so far, is only a soph transfer from D2 mankato but he is D1 talent.
Derrick Lang is looking good at running back. He is a strong runner with some moves. First I have heard of him. He looks good.
The defensive play is going to be adequate. Better on pass defense and the linebacking looks great.
Lots of MVC promotion.
Im liking what Im seeing out of the new BISON team. 2010 could be another NDSU football team for the record books.

Re: Missouri Valley Football 2010 Thread
It ended up 28-21 with all TDS coming on the pass play except 1. Derrick Land was the big surprise at running back. Justing Howard was outstanding at wide receiver. He is a soph transfer from D2. He has speed, can get speration and run routes. Best of all if it hits his hands he catches it.
Linebackers look very strong. young bunch too.
We may have seen RFR Brock Jensen move up to #2 on the QB depth chart. Jose Mohler probably kept his #1 spot.

Hopefully not in the same way the 2009 team was. If the MVC is going to improve it's depth, the Bison need to start pulling their weight, like SDSU is.JBB wrote:end of 1st half. Re: Missouri Valley Football 2010 Thread
2010 should be plenty improved, but I think that 2011 is where they will get back into the top of the conference. I think they have a lot of young talent, so another year of experience and they should be set. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me if they put up 8-3 this year, although 6-5 or 7-4 may be more realistic. Sounds like Jensen is a pretty good QB - will be interesting to see if Mohler or he will end up starting. RB's sound like they're pretty stacked as well. The defense is where the question mark is - if they can do even an adequate job, the Bison should have a decent year.JBB wrote:end of 1st half. Lots and lots of passing. Its an explosive attack. YSU quarterback recruit, Patrick Angle, went 7 of 12 for 115 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions in the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association North vs. South Game at Ohio Stadium on Friday Night.
Although his numbers were some of the best of all players in the game, the MVP of the game went to Ohio State QB recruit Verlon Reed, Angle's teammate on the South team, who went just 1 of 7 for 10 yards passing and had 45 yards on the ground on 5 carries. Talk about being snubbed!
Greg Frey, former Ohio State quarterback said the following of Angle, "the best quarterback in high school in the State of Ohio.... period. Watch this stud in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHHZ-txn ... re=related

Re: Missouri Valley Football 2010 Thread
Wasn't at the spring game myself, but from what I read at sdsufans here is what I gathered.
Offense- QB Tommy O'Brien has developed well mentally from last year, but had some accuracy issues due to crappy windy wet weather (not an excuse IMO, playing at Caughlin you better damn well be able to throw in shitty weather). We have a new QB coach which may have also contributed, but I hear he is a good coach, so hopefully this helps O'Brien play up to the talent he has. The O-line was dinged up, and full of inexprience, so I don't think that anyone has a good idea of where they are at besides the coaches. The WR's had a hard time getting open. Minnet was Minnet, being his usual self. Our TE Cochart looked really good.
Defense- The D-line looked very good. I would contribute this to the O-line situation, but also a lot of talent being there. Apparently the D is going to be one hard hitting unit, with some people on sdsufans saying they were almost hitting too hard for a spring game (which I disagree with and agree with, they should play all out but you don't want any serious injuries) Looking forward to seeing how they smack people in a game. One person went so far as to say that they could be better than last year. :O
Overall-The first string is very good, but after that apparently we are a very raw team. Good talent, but untested. Should be interesting to see how fast they mature, and if the injury bug bites too hard. Defense should be the strength again this year, even with losing some very very good players. Maybe even better than last year. The offense worked on some no huddle, which is new. Next season will depend on two things IMO. How well O'Brien develops, and how well the O-line comes together. We have a fantastic O-line coach, so I'm not too worried about them. Of course, like most every fan of their team, I think the Jacks are going to be deadly this year.

Ever year we hear from MSU fans that "This year is the year", and every year the finish middle of the pack or lower.dbackjon wrote:Missouri State ahead of UNI and Normal? Interesting
It looks like the media is buying the hype that the fans are selling this year. That's about it.

I hope neither. However, the "year" that the two are talking about, MSU's. I posted these on LetsGoGuins.com... Enjoy the comments
:
1. Southern Illinois- lost Karim, but brought in Shariff Harris from Pitt at RB.
2. South Dakota State- well coached and solid across the board.
3. Missouri State- I am thinking this is the year they break thru in this league.
4. Youngstown State- will improve on that 6-5 record from last year; running game leads Penguins.
5. Northern Iowa- lost a lot of starters from a 7-4 team, but they usually do reload.
6. Illinois State- they stunk at YSU and I do not know what the hype is all about.
7. North Dakota State- their fans think they are going to be amazing, I beg to differ.
8. Indiana State- get three wins over Quincy, St. Joes, and Western Illinois.
9. Western Illinois- lost to Indiana State last year and they stunk.

Re: Missouri Valley Football 2010 Thread
Please point out MSU fans saying every year is the year? I've seen you say that a few times now, but it couldn't be farther from the truth. MSU fans know our spot, which for the last 20 years have been middle of the pack or lower, just like you say. That said, the last three seasons now we have added a win each year. Coach Allen is building this program the right way, by recruiting almost all HS players and redshirting almost entire classes of them. He's getting to the point that it is either 'put up or shut up.' MSU fans will be calling for his firing if this is another 6-5 season.clenz wrote:Ever year we hear from MSU fans that "This year is the year", and every year the finish middle of the pack or lower.dbackjon wrote:Missouri State ahead of UNI and Normal? We have the personnel to be special this season (7+ wins), but the biggest question is whether our preschool OC will grow some cajones and actually call some big plays this season.
I know it's old, but here is the official story from our Spring game (it stormed almost the entire day)
The low-scoring scrimmage was threatened by mid-day rain, but after starting just a few minutes later than scheduled, proved to be an exciting affair. Junior running back Chris Douglas carried 17 times for a game-high 63 yards to set the pace in the backfield. Meanwhile, redshirt freshman quarterback Trevor Wooden led the second offensive unit but also pulled in four receptions for 84 yards as a wideout.
On the defensive side, sophomores Anthony Lee and Ryan Callender shared game-high honors with six stops apiece. Lee also came up with a big interception to kill a drive by the offense at the two-yard line. Colby Broadnax, Byron Hightower and Rodney Kelly also contributed five tackles.
A 50-yard pass from Cody Kirby to Wooden in the first half was the longest play of the day as Wooden fought through a near deflection to come down with a juggling catch on the near sideline. Wooden's athleticism was evident throughout the contest as he also carried six times for 41 yards with a team-long 19 yard carry. For the afternoon, the High Springs, Fla., native accumulated 125 all-purpose yards and was 3-for-6 for 17 yards at quarterback.
Kirby finished 13-for-18 for 183 yards and a touchdown -- a six-yard completion to Stephen Johnston to end the first half -- as the only touchdown of the game.
The offense also scored on a 27-yard field goal by Jordan Chiles in the first quarter.
Also helping the receiving corps were Jermaine Saffold with four catches for 48 yards, Adrian Williams (3-37), and Johnston (3-20).
The defensive squad scored a safety late in the second quarter and finished with a pair of sacks, five pass break-ups, seven tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and Lee's interception.
''Overall, we had a good spring, and this was a good way to end it. We saw some good things out there today,'' said MSU head coach Terry Allen. ''This game is really for our fans and the parents, and I am glad the weather held out long enough for them to have fun.''

Young, FAST, athletic, skilled, well coached, and now with more personnel in place, run a system that will be tough to stop. The "secret" to beating us will be to out score us, because it will be tough if not impossible to stop the O. Due to lack of experience, we are likely still a year away, but this is going to be a very good year.

FWIW, I think Illinois State could win the league this year.

Well I will believe it when I see it with the Redbirds. They did not impress me at all when they came to Youngstown last year, scoring 18 points on us. I was extremely impressed with Missouri State, their QB Kirby, and their defense as a whole. They, in my eyes, are the real deal.
I look at it like this, MSU, ILSU, and YSU all finished 6-5 last year. All should finish with 6-7-8 wins this year. As of now, I have MSU with 8, YSU with 7, and ILSU with 6.

Good Point. And we get back our #1 QB, Drew Kiel, nephew of former NFL QB Blair Kiel. The guy that beat UNI will likely be a RS. Drew broke his arm/wrist while taking a sack right before the half in out season opener at EIU. We have 3 quality QB's, 2 Juniors and a Sophomore.clenz wrote:Illinois State returns something like 85% of their offense.guinzone wrote:Well I will believe it when I see it with the Redbirds. We've also added BCS transfers at WR and tailback.
We'll be able to score, the question is if the D will have the ability to stop anybody. We'll win our share of 44-38 games.
