Why play the starters if you know who they are and what they bring. Our spring game is usually seeing who is fighting for the back up/special teams/ next guy in role.
Oh, I don't know. Maybe to see who is still in shape, or better at their position than last year, or who will challenge the returning starters, or who is hungry enough to lead the team to a conference playoff run? This is in a semi-game setting that I am referencing.

Plus, it's a good time to start to get the fans a little excited, in some way, or form, in the upcoming season. I, personally, want to see the guys that are coming back and see how the redshirts are fitting into the scheme of things.

I know it's spring drills but they can also be very telling

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

What the hell are you talking about? This has nothing to do with fans not showing up, but rather that we do not have a stadium--well, half a stadium. Bridgeforth is currently being expanded and the field is covered to protect it from construction debris. It has nothing to do with fans not showing up.

I think that's what Libertine is saying....JMU fans literally can't attend a game at their own stadium because of the reason you just stated... :twocents:

You know, you're right. My mistake on that one. Just ignore my comment.

I disagree. It give the players motivation and something to work towards. It was a fun way to end Spring practices. And it gives the coaches a chance to see what players can put it all together in a game situation. I hated doing one on one pass pro because the defensive play KNOW its pass and they tee off on you. I can't tell you how many times I got whipped in pass pro, but in a scrimmage, I dominated the same players because they didn't know if I was going to pass block or fire them up run on a run.

the three weeks of practice will tell the coaches a hell of a lot more than a completely controlled spring game will on terms of who has progressed and who is in shape. If your fans need a spring game to get excited about your team you need new fans.

Missing the point of fans missing football (after 4 months) and getting excited about the new season, months earlier than normal. I would think this would have not needed explaining. Maybe it's 'old hat' for some teams but it's not around here. And seeing what the new guys (redshirts) are going to bring to the team is up there too.
We have a battle for some key positions brewing, especially at QB.
I, for one, want to see what those guys are bringing.

Oh, and I forgot to mention.... it's fun, with tailgating and all
It's Bobcat Football in the spring. What more do you need to know?

Just kidding. Two team captains, one is usually the Mayor and the other is a member of ASG or Staff. They do a draft earlier in the day. They run some plays the first half. Second half the same teams but now the coaches call the shots. Coach Wright is just observing the entire game and rubbing some elbows. Since they are no longer divided by 1st and second squad it makes for a pretty close match up.

No need to further explain yourself Catmom. Clenzy is against spring games because he didn't like holding the 1st down marker with the placekicker. :kisswink:

Having the new stadium come online by 2011, with all the hype and progress updates, will more than make up for losing the spring game in juicing up the alumni base.
If the stadium came on line in 2010 it would be less important. But 1 year+ out a opportunity lost is just lost.

You must be a very happy man as I'm sure this happens to you quite frequently.

However, as Libertine and Tabitha pointed out... no stadium to watch the game in. They can still have spring practices/games... but Candy (actual toonson football player) brings up a great point about that also.

not sure if it was mentioned above, but someone said that we must practice on Field Turf .... if thats the case the fields behind UREC are field turf. The ones where the IM softball games are held.

Right, but then we have the issue of seating. Two bleachers, hold about 40-50 people total. Some of our soccer games had that many people there, and unless they can bring in goalposts and people are happy standing, seating's still an issue.
