Nah, it's handy to have a little proof that the vote is split as I had thought it probably was. Just didn't know it was so dead even.

Glad you started it. :thumb:

How about a pre-season playoff proginstation poll?

Select the 20 teams you think will be in the playoffs.

Like the other pre-season polls (and what Colonel has stated) it diminishes the validity of one started after the season starts and it isn't necessary. The only necessity I am reading in this is that it is "something to do" before a real, more accurate, poll is done. Not a good reason IMHO.

I mean really, are we going to stoop to the opinions of the AGS people in that they "felt" our poll was not worth the page it was printed on just because we actually waited until things shook out a little....as it should be?

We could format the poll as a "bracketology" poll

Pick each auto-bid champion.

From the remaining teams, pick at-larges.

(I know that it what you said, just expanding and thinking about how it would work)

The team with the most votes for the auto-bid spots will be given those positions. Voters rank the at-larges in order of "security of bid", for instance, if Cal-Poly is 11-0 and you know they're a lock, you put them at #1. If Liberty and JMU are battling for the last at-large, and LU beat JMU, so you think they're slightly ahead, you put Liberty at #10. If someone else thinks Cal Poly is a beast, but isn't as secure as Richmond at 10-1, then they put CP 2nd, and that gives them one less point than the other voter, obviously.

This is something I am more than willing to run, if cs.com doesn't want to officially adopt it, if anyone is interested.

Yeah, that is the problem I struggle with on this issue cuz I don't know how to get rid of that.

Just spit balling here...what if we did a preseason ballot that is completely separate from our poll and is actually more like a contest to see who can come closest to the ACTUAL final rankings? The top 3 "guessers" can win something cool and that way it is a contest and not part of our actaul poll that starts in the 3rd week.

That keeps it separate and may actually take some homerism out of it to start the year because you are gonna be picking it base on the fact that you could win something and have the loftiness as being one of the guys that knew how the year was gonna end up before it even started.

It would still give us all the ballots to discuss and we could combine the ballot entries to post what the CS contest group thinks will be the final result.

I'd be willing to do it as an entry fee ($5) or something small like that with 100% payout or if that doesn't fly then maybe a few of us could just get some FCS prizes donated.
I like it!

Oh and most people who will vote in the CS poll will be using the other polls as reference anyway so the bias of the preseason poll will already be there.

I dislike the bias a preseason poll creates but it almost seems like a necessary evil. I remember the top 10 last year being a CAA clusterfuck based on the early FBS games.

While your concerns about preseason polls is shared...your CAA hate does not help the argument...

Voters come from all conferences...they vote based on perceptions, which is the problem...not the conference... :ohno:

Not only that but our poll had the smae CAA teams up at the top and in ours the "homer" vote is taken out of it so it WAS what everybody around the country thought were the top teams.

CAA pre-season bias? Three of the final 8 playoffs teams were CAA, 2 of the final 4 and the FCS Champion was CAA for the 4th time in 7 years. Sounds like the pre-season polls were pretty accurate.

I dislike preseason polls. In fact, I dislike any poll until after at least 3 weeks into the season when you can actually start measuring a team's merit. Prior to then, it's all based on somebody else's PR, hype, prior season's results, and 'cache'.

An "accurate" poll depends on when you do the research. Whether after spring ball, fall ball or 3-4 weeks into the season, you still need to research the teams and make an educated guess. Even 3-4 weeks in, it is still a crapshoot as most teams have not played any conference games at that point. Myself, I think after spring ball is too soon, yet most publications and polls, including AGS, will come out with a poll after May. I've seen too many things happen during the summer and fall ball to think these polls are truly an accurate account of where the teams might be when the season starts.

It still all comes out in the wash, though. After the season, I had all eight at large teams in the top 14 of my poll. Most publications and individuals had them at least in the top 15.

Thats why there shouldn't be any polls till at least the mid way point of the season (after week 6 of 12). I'd rather see the cs poll do that, but the cs poll after week 4 is better than those retarded pre season polls when you have nothing to go on.

I ignore all the meaningless pre season polls. If I end up voting in the cs poll, I will base it soley on the 1st 4 weeks. What happened the year before or the pre season polls will have zero to do with it.

I could have voted last year, but didn't. I didn't feel qualified enough to do so. This year I feel more prepared to do so.

Pre-season polls are always about prestige, history, last year. That's why I hate them. You have to give things time to shake out. Take into consideration coaching changes, players leaving, transferring, graduating. If a team lost 20 players you have to look at who is coming back. Did they lose their all everything QB, WR, RB, the stalwarts of the D line? Who's replacing them? How do you figure this in May...on the recruiting class? I don't think so.

Do you put SFA ahead of McNeese or TXST because they have their QB back and the other 2 have untested starters? How many players did SFA lose otherwise, versus the other 2? How can you place them in a poll without anything being played out on a field? (I use the SLC as examples because it's what I know best) All 3 of these teams were in the hunt for the SLC until week 10. With a round-robin of who beat who in conference play. All 3 ended up in the final poll.

Anyway, that's a bit of the issues I have with pre-season polls.

Besides all that everybody else has said...you realize your argument wasn't about preseason polls, but a poll after the first week, which was presumably based on results, which did happen (CAA teams beat or perfomed well against FBS teams). I'm not sure if that poll looks any different without a preseason poll. Teams that perform well against tougher competition are going to be at the top of any poll.

I didn't vote in this because it doesn't matter to me either way. If we don't do a preseason poll, then we should wait AT LEAST four weeks out to do one, maybe more to let conference play kick in.

I only have time to vote in one poll and this will be the one I vote in this year, so let me know when I can sign up.
