the only rulebook I have handy is from 2009, so maybe it has changed since then, but here's what that rulebook said:

rule 9, section 3, article 2
The ball carrier shall not grasp a teammate; and no other player of his
team shall grasp, pull, push, lift or charge into him to assist him in
forward progress.

obviously they don't always enforce that rule.
