Then all of Helena will want a shot at the Griz next year.

There is a buyout clause in the agreement, if needed. Most of our OOC games have them, in case the Ducks or Beavers have problems filling out their schedules. A couple years back, the Ducks had an opponent back out at the last minute, they took care of our buyout with Southern Oregon, and then we took a check to play them.
Hear a lot of that talk even down here, UM scared of Carroll, Wyoming afraid to schedule Carroll, Carroll is the best college team in Montana, Carroll is always the national champions, etc, etc.

I hear that stuff, too. Q: Is Carroll sandbagging? Should they be moving up to FCS or somewhere else?

They should play in DII. Although DII is even more sparse out west than FCS

They are a bunch of really good athletes coached by a great coach. Nobody else is recruiting many of these athletes except other Frontier Conference teams of course. Moving up looks to be a great Idea, but even with MVD and company intact we know the recruiting parameters would be quite different there if competing with the FCSs in the region.

Grand Valley State, NWMS, Mt Union, Carroll- get a life, move into the right sized pond and try and compete with the real world, I thought our nation was taking a stand against bullying, what kind of examples do you programs set for the little kids, huh??

My exposure to NAIA football recently has been limited to the annual football tangle with Eastern Oregon and Rocky Mountain College when they would play in La Grande (last year EOU beat Carroll in La Grande). My impression has always been afterwards regarding the level of both of those teams, that there may be some positions where the skill and speed would be on par with Portland State, but overall they are two different levels. Similar to the difference with FCS and FBS.

Most of that stuff from Carroll fans is to get under the skin of Griz and Cat fans who give them no credit. Same as Griz and Cat fans saying that they would kick the crap out of Wyoming any day of the week and twice on Sundays  Carroll is getting $45k to play that game and, I believe, the buyout is $15k or $20k so either way it is a good payday for an NAIA school. Don't really know why PSU is playing an NAIA team but, like you said, fill the date and then see if someone better comes along.

Yeah, this is a win/win for Carroll, and a lose/lose for PSU unless they fill the stands, and win like they are supposed to. Don't really know how loaded up MVD will be next year, but the possibility of a loss to Carroll as you know is real. They may be quite a bit smaller, not as fast, but they will not beat themselves either. Great small college program to say the least.

I don't know if its necessarily a win/win for Carroll. That's a program that isn't used to losing, especially in what could be a blowout. Maybe it will strengthen them down the stretch, or maybe it will get the wheels on the bus wobbling...

It's a money game for them, so they win. If they get blown out, so what, you can say everybody expected it. One would hope that they would not be so inferior that they got physically beat up and suffered some key season ending injuries then I see your point.

PSU would be wise to see about getting a different game.

But do they expect to lose? It's a program with a lot of pride that is probably 2nd only to Mount Union in losses over the last decade. Defeat is something they're not used to

We are not scared of playing Carroll and, if the game goes down, welcome them to Jeld-Wen. Truth of the matter is that Carroll will not see the pistol offense played any better than how we play it, even that early in the season and even without McCaffrey and Kavanaugh. Carroll will not have the benefit of the whole summer to work on stopping it as they are playing MSU-Northern (conference foe) the week before. We don't have Montana on the schedule and play Montana State on the road, so hopefully Carroll fans will travel well. We understand that Carroll is a formidable foe with their success at the NAIA level, but last year Eastern Oregon beat them the second game of the year. Obviously, the best time to get them is early on. The possibility of a loss to Carroll is there, but probably not as real as one may think. I'd say don't bet against us.

We were on the edge of a "traditional" FCS OOC schedule, having inked Washington (FBS) and North Dakota (FCS) before. All we needed was a lower tier opponent to play at home and we'd be set. Neither Montana school was coming to Portland this year so why not take a Frontier opponent. We were all familiar with Parker as he was a finalist for the PSU AD job awhile back, so Carroll is not a total unknown to us. We know who they are and know about their success.

I think it is similar when an FCS schools plays a top FBS school like Oregon or Washington. The Carroll team is excited to play a FCS opponent. Some kids on the Carroll team were recruited by UM and MSU and want to see how they stack up to that kind of competition. They certainly will show up and play hard, irregardless of the chance to win.
