McNeese tied with Nebraska
Game on ESPNU. McNeese just tied the game 24-24, just under 5 mins left. Cowboys to kickoff.

McNeese went conservative. Nebraska ball 1:15 left, MCNeese 40 yard line.

McNeese didn't bother to wrap up, in specific, #21 tried to lay a hit with two other tacklers on the Nebraska TD.

Re: McNeese tied with Nebraska
That sure sucked. Get in a game like that and you have to hope the big time team makes some mistakes and you play near perfect. Nebraska did make some mistakes and McNeese played well. But the Cowboys made too many mistakes of their own. Like lining up improperly to get a TD called back. And BOY did they miss some big play opportunities because of not being able to connect on that little swing pass to the speed burner Arkansas transfer.
Oh well. Disappointing because they had a chance to win and didn't quite get it done.
I wish they could play like that in the playoffs.

Re: McNeese tied with Nebraska
I caught the second half and was very impressed with McNeese's effort. I thought they went a big conservative, like playing for OT instead of trying to win it. The mis-direction before the tying FG, looked like the QB could have ran it and got close to a TD instead of handing it off. And the three straight plays late. I mean you are deep in your own end, but you are playing a nationally ranked FBS team. What do you have to lose?JohnStOnge wrote:That sure sucked. Still, I am nitpicking. Great game and overall great performance McNeese.

Re: McNeese tied with Nebraska
The biggest nit pick I have is that once they got the first and goal when Nebraska got called for a face mask penalty they didn't go ahead and put Daniel Sams in at quarterback. To me it looked like he would be awfully tough to stop in that situation. Just put him in with run/pass option. He pretty much showed when he was in there that Nebraska was not going to stop him with reasonably short yardage to go if he decided to take off.I caught the second half and was very impressed with McNeese's effort. All kinds of stuff in that game. Like on that same possession the fullback being wide open for the TD and the ball getting tipped. It was really an "Oh SOOOOOOO close" type of game. Even the thing where they blitzed on Nebraska's last possession, hit the QB, and caused a fumble. Just let that ball bounce a different way so that McNeese recovers instead of having it go right to a Nebraska offensive lineman and they're in long field goal range with the ball, about a minute left, and Nebraska with one time out left.
VERY "what if" type of game.

Re: McNeese tied with Nebraska
Well, that one was disappointing but not as much as some other things. That back is a great player and he made a great play. They otherwise contained him very well all day. And they were probably gassed at that point. Heck, #21 (Aaron Sam) was gassed after he ran that interception back.SeattleGriz wrote:McNeese didn't bother to wrap up, in specific, #21 tried to lay a hit with two other tacklers on the Nebraska TD.
If I want to be disappointed I can be more disappointed in the offense missing multiple opportunities for plays that were there and stuff like having the two wideouts on the left side both line up set back from the line of scrimmage on a play that otherwise would've been a TD. That and, again, repeatedly missing on that swing pass thing when it was there; particularly when #1 was involved. That guy came out of high school with the reputation as being as fast a football player as there was in Texas and there were several plays where he had a lot of space but either the QB missed him or he dropped the ball. There was one in particular where Nebraska blitzed on third down and he had nothing but green in front of him but the QB missed him. I personally think that was going to be around a 60 yard TD play if the quarterback hit him in stride and he catches it. Nebraska had real problems defending that play all day but McNeese kept screwing it up.
I thought the defense played great. It's just that when the game was on the line Nebraska's best player made a play.

Re: McNeese tied with Nebraska
Well here's a good one: There was an obvious block in the back on Nebraska's game winning TD that the officials missed and it was also important to the play. If you watch the replay you will see that after the back breaks the tackle by three guys there is one more McNeese guy, #20, with a legitimate shot to make the tackle. As he's squaring up to try to make the tackle #11 for Nebraska whacks him from behind and takes him down.
Whether he would've made the tackle or not we'll never know. But it was definitely a block in the back. Good luck for Nebraska and bad luck for McNeese that the officials didn't see it. Really too bad.

That wasn't a block in the back. You've got to hit a guy square in the back, not the side.JohnStOnge wrote:Well here's a good one: There was an obvious block in the back on Nebraska's game winning TD that the officials missed and it was also important to the play. Good GRIEF dude. That was not in the side unless you think somebody's shoulder blade is part of their side.hat wasn't a block in the back. You've got to hit a guy square in the back, not the side.

If an official sees that that's going to be called a block in the back.

From my understanding, the block has to be between the numbers to be a block in the back. That one wasn't.JohnStOnge wrote:Good GRIEF dude. If an official sees that that's going to be called a block in the back.
Also notice that the Nebraska blocker's leg is in front of the McNeese defender.

BSC refs would call it against the opponent in Missoula.Mvemjsunpx wrote:From my understanding, the block has to be between the numbers to be a block in the back. That one wasn't.JohnStOnge wrote:

Depends on where the blocker's head is. If the head is on the side of the blockee's jersey bearing his name, it's a block in the back....Mvemjsunpx wrote:That wasn't a block in the back. Re: McNeese tied with Nebraska
I went ahead and looked up the rule in the NCAA rulebook at http://www.dfoa.com/attachments/article ... e_Book.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Here it is:

The point of contact is the McNeese player's right shoulder blade. To me that's clearly a case where the force of the initial contact is from behind and above the waist. If you get hit in the shoulder blade you're hit from behind.
Besides, I've seen plays like that countless times as we all have. Blockers on kick returns and such try to get a hit on the defenders side and don't make it and hit them kind of one side from the back. I've seen that kind of thing called a lot as...again...I think anybody that's watched football for many years has.
I did start/stop/start/stop/start/stop to get the image of the initial contact on the play. Here it is:a. A block in the back is contact against an opponent occurring when the force of the initial contact is from behind and above the waist. When in question, the contact is below the waist (Rule 9-3-3-c) (A.R. 9-3-3-I, -VII and A.R. 10-2-2-XII).
b. The position of the blocker’s head or feet does not necessarily indicate the point of initial contact.
