As a NAU fan, there are pros and cons to Fullerton football.

Pro: Would love to have another FCS team in the area - scheduling is a nightmare.
More exposure for NAU in SoCal

Con: Competition for FCS level athletes in recruiting.

Similar movement at LB and Northridge could form a nice tight FCS conference.

Cal St. Fullerton
Cal St. Long Beach
Cal St. Northridge
UC San Diego
CPSLO
UC Davis
Cal St. Sacramento
No. AZ
So. Utah

a Big West football conf. would be great.

I think you'd see
Fullerton
Riverside
Bakersfield (there's a 20,000 seat stadium in town... not on their campus though)
Poly
Davis
St. Mary's (if efforts to restore the program are a success)
Sacto State
Portland State
San Francisco (there's no movement I'm aware of, but Kezar stadium is just about perfect for FCS)
North Dakota State University Bison 2011 and 2012 National Champions

Yeah too bad the state is on the verge of bankruptcy. :?
Northridge gave up on football in 2001 because it couldn't afford to keep it. Same will happen to Long Beach State and Fullerton if they try to bring their programs back.

UCSD doesn't have football. I am assuming you are referring to USD. Assuming the Big West (or some of the previously mentioned Big West schools) were to take on football, USD would not be let is as their basketball conference is in the West Coast Conference and I am sure that the Big West would require participation in both basketball and football.

USD moving to the Big West Conference in all sports wouldn't be a bad transition for both parties. As we have researched, it might be cheaper for USD to add scholarships and join the BW or BS than to continue traveling in the Pioneer conference.

CSUN gave up on football b/c some genius in their admin thought that cancelling football would allow their other sports programs to receive a boost from the money and support that was circulating in football. Nothing has been improved at CSUN in regard to their facilities and competition in the Big West.. And to top things off, they dropped a program that brings in more fans onto their campus other than graduation ceremonies.
Excuse my texas pun, but football isn't like striking oil. It's not going to make us rich and profitable. It is to build school spirit, add to the 'college life' and reconnect alumni with the school. That's why we are planning on making football run completely on student fees and alumni donations while satisfyin Cal-Now and Title IX. California will not have any financial investment in the program.

I would have to assume that the money that USD brings in via the WCC basketball affiliation and exposure is a lot more than it could with all of its sports with a Big West affiliations and exposure combined so I highly doubt USD will ever move out of the WCC. And as much as it sucks and costs for USD football team to travel all over playing their Pioneer Conference, USD is a private catholic ($$$$$$$) university with a 250 million dollar endowment so I don't see money being a compelling reason for them to make a complete move to the Big West. If anything, the USD football can move to independent and play west coast FCS schools, although I am not sure of any west coast FCS schools that would be up for playing them.

That's the theory, and it would probably work if the football team is able to win games. I got to see first hand (SDSU and Sac State) the "student turnout" (or lack thereof) for FREE athletic events at commuter schools...and most if not all Cal State's are commuter schools. The only Cal State that I can think of that this theory might hold true for is Fresno State. I haven't been to a game first hand, but it's Fresno, so there isn't really anything else going on and I imagine that they would get a good turnout. So as much as having a football team will add to "college life" and build school spirit remains to be seen in a non-college town setting that most of the Cal State's are in.

I will add that if the Cal State schools were able to win on a consistent basis, people would probably go (see Fresno State). That is the other piece of the puzzle when considering supporting a football program.

Oh and by the way, welcome. :D

That article there kind of gives you an understanding of USD's traveling expenses and concerns. They may have a nice endowment, but they are watching their pennies just like everybody else. It is very feasible for USD to add scholarships (partial or full) and join the Big West if it offered football. The Big West might be a couple of ranks lower than WCC in basketball, but they are strong in the other sports that WCC members pride themsevles in (ie baseball, soccer). Obviously, we are not Athletic Directors or Conference Presidents, so we cant assume that a 'football only' membership would be off the table. If anything, I can see the WCC and BW having a relationship similar to the A10 and CAA (several football only members). Especially, with members such as Santa Clara looking to bring back football as well. www.letthemplay.com

As far as the commuter school label that most Cal State schools have, Fullerton is a school that is trying to shed the label. We have added many dorms/apartment complexs to the University and in the process of adding many more. We are currently on Phase III of building dorms to have students live on campus. We didn't have any when we dropped football in 1992. We have 2 fairly new student groups that are promoting student life; The Orange Curtain (www.csuforangecurtain.com) and the titan tusk force. With their efforts, our basketball attendance grew nearly 45%, making the school had to block out 2 extra sections of our gym for our student section. We have more plans in the works, but its too early to announce them.

Good to see active student support - and that Fullerton is trying to turn from a commuter to a residental school - both keys, IMHO to getting football back.

The commuter school label at Sac State was gone two years ago, it is no longer considered a commuter school, it's like calling FCS football I-AA.

And it's Sacramento State, Sac State, or California State University, Sacramento, NO OTHER NAME OR ABBREVIATION IS APPROPRIATE (i.e. Cal State Sacramento)!

http://www.csus.edu/pa/identity/docs/Sa ... F05Fv1.pdf

Unfortunately, Sacramento, like most of CA, is full of a bunch of yuppie bandwagon fans that dont understand what loyalty means.

I think it's great that Cal State Fullerton is trying to bring back football, good luck and welcome.

Well according to wikipedia, Sac State will only have 1,706 beds in their dorms. This includes the new dorm that will open in September. That's 1,706 students living on campus out of 27,972 students (undergrad and post grad) enrolled for a whopping 6.10% of the student population that can live on campus. I wouldn't say that Sac State has shed the "commuter school" label quite just yet. Now this isn't taking into consideration apartments and condos within say a 2 mile radius of the campus that students will most likely live in so I'd like to know why you say that Sac State is no longer a commuter school.

The profs I talked to at Fullerton said the same thing... one prof, who was at NDSU remarked that Fullerton had WAY more students... but WAY LESS atmosphere... I found he was right when I was there... the campus cleared out by 8 pm

You need to push that effort to the students (bringback titan football) you need to get a helmet and set up a bench and talk to the students once a week man. Get them to sign a petition that states they will support 90%-100% of football's costs. Its a tall order to bring football back to fullerton, but you need to start printing out some flyers that say "TITAN FOOTBALL STARTING 2010 SEASON" or something like that. go hard or go home

What wikipedia doesnt mention, is that Sac State has subsidized housing all around the campus, within a block or two. They arent dorms but it is student housing, any housing that is subsidized by the university and allows students only, is student housing.

And it's not me saying that, it's the university!
