The way I see it is this kid wants to stay a kid and not grow up. Playing football in college is a priviliege. He obviously didn't get to college on his intelligence. He has a great chance to make something of himself and he'd rather dick off. DUDE, IT'S ONLY 4 YEARS OF YOUR LIFE. YOU HAVE 4 YEARS AT A MINIMUM TO SET YOURSELF UP FOR A PRODUCTIVE, LIFE. He obviously doesn't care nor should I.
When he's doing blow off a hooters tit in 2 years and suckin cock for coke, he'll maybe look back at his time in college and wish he had taken advantage at the oppurtunity handed to him. Fuck him. I have no sympathy.

I agree that it is definitely not free, they do work for it.
I do have to say I wish more coaches actually took this sort of attitude with student athletes who do not put the effort into the classroom. To often Athletic departments and coaches fight for students who just don't care. Mike Leach is just saying he is done with that. If you put in the effort we will help and make sure you have every opportunity, but if you slack off, you are not more important than the team. It takes eleven and it is not long before the team mates putting in the effort quickly learn they do not have to try either.
That being said, these days, at most universities, you almost have to try to flunk out. If you know what majors to stay in and what profs and classes to avoid you can generally make it through 2-3 years (post JC) and maintain your eligibility. You may not graduate but you will be eligible.
Also for those universities that have a really high graduation rate. When everybody graduates it usually means anybody graduates, devaluing the degrees of all students and athletes at the school. No coach or program is that good at figuring out who will commit and who will not, you will always have a few bad apples get through the cracks.
