So Charleston Southern loses to Gardner Webb
Amazing. All that build up to Coastal Carolina then laid an egg the next week.
And you know Liberty is not going to be a cakewalk for them. They could very well lose that game. And if they do that's it. Win and they're in the playoffs. Lose and they're out.

CSU didn't lay an egg today. They got their ass handed to them.

No, GW just passed on to CSU the egg they laid last week against VMIelcid83 wrote:CSU didn't lay an egg today. They got their ass handed to them.

Re: So Charleston Southern loses to Gardner Webb
There's variation in performance. I think most would agree they played a substantially better team the previous week and won. Part of it is how teams match up but I think part of it is that it's just impossible for teams to play their best every time.elcid83 wrote:CSU didn't lay an egg today. I'm not shocked Garner Webb beat them. As I said after they beat Coastal Carolina THAT surprised me because of stuff like struggling with very bad D-II Shorter.
Anyway, they'd better get back to playing their best next week because that's essentially a playoff game for them now and if you look at Liberty's schedule as well as the results I don't think they're too far behind Coastal Carolina in caliber. Four losses but they were a 7 point loss to Kent State, 9 and 4 point losses to a couple of CAA teams, and a three point overtime loss to Coastal Carolina.
You know come to think of it I don't know if it wouldn't have been essentially a playoff game for Charleston Southern anyway because if they'd won then lost to Liberty next week there would probably be a three way tie for the conference championship and I don't know who would get the automatic bid.

GWU beat Wofford [our alma mater has not done so in 16 years], Furman, and Charleston Southern. Our alma mater lost to all 3 of these guys. GWU is 3-1 against ranked opponents this year. I'm not sure why you felt compelled to contribute to this discussion and highlight The Citadel's ineptness against a really soft Southern Conference this year. On another note, it will be interesting to see how Gardner-Webb fares in Charleston in 2014.

Did GW not lose to VMI last week? Did CSU not lose to GW this week? Seems like they both laid an egg for sure.
El Cid has laid a bunch of eggs this season, but this thread isn't about The Citadel, is it?

Regardless of what happened yesterday - if CSU loses to LU next Saturday, CCU will receive the Big South autobid. CCU & LU would then be Big South Conference Co-Champions, and CSU probably would be out of the playoffs.JohnStOnge wrote:You know come to think of it I don't know if it wouldn't have been essentially a playoff game for Charleston Southern anyway because if they'd won then lost to Liberty next week there would probably be a three way tie for the conference championship and I don't know who would get the automatic bid.
If CSU wins, they receive the autobid and share the conference championship with us. At that point, you'd likely see two Big South teams in the playoffs as I don't see us being left out.
So, I suppose the majority of the FCS world will be rooting for LU next weekend - a one-bid Big South is usually what everyone seems to want, anyway.
Re: So Charleston Southern loses to Gardner Webb
Classic trap game. On the road, sandwiched between HUGE home games vs Coastal and Liberty?
GWU is a very good team. CSU knew that this game really didn't matter. Win or lose, they had to beat Liberty to win the BSC and make the playoffs, as Coastal probably would've won a 3 way tie.
By losing, the Big South can only be won by CCU with a CSU loss, or CSU with a CSU win. Liberty, if they win, would force a 2 way tie with Coastal which they lose due to head to head. If CSU wins, 2 way with CCU which CSU wins.
CSU vs Liberty for the Big South. That's how it would've been win or lose vs GWU.
But GWU is a great team, CSU kinda overlooked 'em, and got their asses kicked. Lesson learned. Now beat Liberty!

Not sensitive 90. I just don't understand how someone that did not watch a football game can come on a message board and say someone laid an egg. The truth of the matter is that GWU played an outstanding game and beat CSU. CSU didn't just play poorly or "lay an egg." They played their tails off and got beat. It happens and the winning team's effort should not be diminished by offhand comments such as the favored team "laid an egg." Credit should be given when it is due.CID1990 wrote:I'm not sure why you're so damn sensitive about it.elcid83 wrote:

Re: So Charleston Southern loses to Gardner Webb
You're 100% right. GWU beat us. That's all we can say, and all anyone else should say. GWU beat Wofford. Beat Richmond. And now beat the 1st or 2nd place team in the Big South depending on how the season plays out I guess.elcid83 wrote:Not sensitive 90. Good job Gardner Webb. Beat us straight up, better team on the field that day won.
But now...CSU must regroup. Beat Liberty and we win the Big South and go to the playoffs.

Re: So Charleston Southern loses to Gardner Webb
Guys, Gardner Webb went into this game having lost four of its last five including losing by 42-7 to Coastal Carolina and 24-0 to Liberty. They lost Charlotte.
Fortunately for Charleston Southern it doesn't change anything for them UNLESS they were in position to lose to Liberty and get in on a three way tiebreaker.

Re: So Charleston Southern loses to Gardner Webb
A 3 way tie between CSU/LU/CCU would've gone against CSU. CCU's schedule includes Eastern Kentucky, SC State, Elon and other solid 1-AA teams. CSU's D2 games against Shorter and NGU would have hurt their strength of schedule, and the 3 way tie uses a formula that factors Sagarin/Massey ratings, so CCU would've won it.
The CSU vs GWU game meant only 2 things for CSU:
- A chance to win/lose a game, which is always important of course.
- IF they win the Big South, the GWU loss may have cost them seeding and a home playoff game, or tougher opponent draw.
Other than that, it was always gonna be having to beat Liberty to win the playoff berth. Still is, GO BUCS!
