Historic Expansion Plans for YSU Stambaugh Stadium
Check out these historic photos of Stambaugh Stadium over on GuinZone.com. Included in this collection are renderings of an expanded Stambaugh Stadium that looked sweet.

very cool pictures. I am not a huge fan of the unbalanced look, or the expansion with the unbalanced look, but it is still very cool to see those renderings.

I do agree with the stark difference between the one side and the other, but I'd still take it. I'd really actually prefer the whole setup with just a larger east stands.
Currently the foundation is set for an expansion of the east stands as they currently stand. Note the concrete area concourse for the east stands.

Wow - the stadium is really shoe-horned into a small space!

Sure is.. Freeway to the north. Road to the west. Basketball Arena to the south. Only room for expansion is really to the east.dbackjon wrote:Wow - the stadium is really shoe-horned into a small space!
But as the drawings show, they could do a bowled time of thing in a very small way.

Reminds me of Augsburg College in Minneapolis. We played there my freshman year and this past season. Their football field is parallel to I-94. If I were to shank a punt, it'd cause car pileups on the free way

What I like most about our campus is that its in an urban setting. You got the dorms across the freeway. Arena right next door. And in the seats in the upper rows, you got a great view of downtown Youngstown.
Here is a great birds eye view of all the vantage-points of Stambaugh Stadium. Just hit the direction letters in the top left corner to see the view from the different directions...

It is quite tiny up there. I went up there my freshman year when I was at Wartburg.Willie wrote:Reminds me of Augsburg College in Minneapolis. We played there my freshman year and this past season. worse still is baseball season... when a deep homer to right ends up on the freeway... yikesclenz wrote:It is quite tiny up there. as for YSU - I've always thought that being confined in a spot like that tends to make for interesting quirks, if you expand right.

What I didn't like about the stadium was the freezing rain we sat through in the '94 semifinal game with the Dave Dickenson-less Griz taking a thumping.

Haha, they call it the Ice Castle for a reason. That year it certainly was an Ice Castle... We took it to McNair and Alcorn State on ESPN, then proceeded to take down E. Kentucky and Montana at home before beating Boise State for the Title!kemajic wrote:What I didn't like about the stadium was the freezing rain we sat through in the '94 semifinal game with the Dave Dickenson-less Griz taking a thumping.
