Nickname transition now appearing

Post by Darell1976 »

UND's athletic website Fightingsioux.com has now transitioned away. When typed you will be redirected to undsports.com. Also there is talk that the Alerus Center, while getting new turf for next season, will have just North Dakota in the endzones instead of Sioux as is now. The only question is how many of the logos will come down from the privately owned Ralph Engelstad Arena. The NCAA is going to take a personal trip to Grand Forks in January (not during a hockey game due to scheduling conflicts) to view the arena and possibly review what logos were to come down in the 2007 settlement and maybe save more logos as "historical value". It was noted in the settlement that not all the logos were going due to financial problems and historical value (like banners, statues, etc). The REA did say they were NOT going to pay for any logos to come off the building.

That is such a shame with the R.E.A. I attended a hockey game there in November, my first ever visit, and that place is in a league of its own. Remarkable architecture, planning, layout and those logos are magnificent and are so respectfully placed. What the NCAA is doing here borders on unconscionable.

If the REA was owned by UND they would have been changed as of now..but its not. The REA wants to respect Ralph's wishes and keep the arena as is, but logos on things like doors, seats, ice, and some others will have to be replaced. The statues in and outside the arena, the championship banners, the jerseys, and the logos embedded in the granite floor will stay. I hope the NCAA can just leave the arena and mark the whole things as historical value. UND does take over the arena in 2030 (maybe the NCAA will leave the arena alone until then).

I can understand changing the logo on the ice as that is all you see when watching on television. The remainder is part of a total venue art form. I certainly hope the NCAA takes the entire embodiment into consideration. Good luck to you.

Darrell: Hypothetical question from my colleagues as we did not realize the REA will be gifted to UND in 2030. What if it was gifted to the Spirit Lake Nation and the name changed to, oh say, The Ralph Engelstad/Spirit Lake Nation History and Cultural Events Center. Spirit Lake in turns gifts to UND the rights to host events in “their” facility. Since it now would be tribally owned, UND is a guest, would anything have to be changed? It’s an interesting philosophy and I said I would run it by those in the know.

It's a beautiful hockey facility - but it's also a monument to one man's megalomania... and his obsession with keeping the nickname around... the obsessive use of the logo in the architecture is... kinda creepy IMO... Kupchella knew what he was getting in to when he made the deals with that guy...

As it is - I'm glad it's been resolved... the biggest thing will be to get rid of the logo at center ice... and to remove it from where practical from the arena... but there's only so much you can do given how it was built

Question: Does the NCAA have authority over the fans? For at least the next couple of years, diehard fans will continue to call the team the Sioux. There IS precedent for that. When the CFL was in Baltimore, the team was officially known as the Baltimore Stallions, but the fans screamed "COLTS!!!!!" every time they were announced, loud enough to drown out the PA's announcement of the "official" name. I fully expect the same situation at UND games. I just hope the NCAA doesn't think they can penalize the school for what the fans do.

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Yeah, how did that work out for 'em? How did it work out for Hofstra Flying Dutchmen fans who refused to call their team the Pride?

Life goes on, so people may as well embrace the change. It's going to happen whether they want it to or not.

There are fans at Dartmouth that still have shirts that say Indians. I am sure Marquette has fans that yell out Warriors, or the Miami (OH) Redskins. UND will have fans (including me) that will wear our Sioux gear and will belt out Sioux (although it will be more out of habit than in protest). President Kelley said UND fans can wear Sioux logo gear but he hopes when a new nickname is found that fans will transition themselves over to the new nickname.

That is a good question. But I think its already written that UND will be given control of the REA, but then stranger things has happened.

I actually think Ralph hated und and forced the logo on them to ruin their programs. As a university they have allowed themselves to be subjugated by the outside money. The NCAA is absolutely correct in their actions, they are consistent with their policy affecting all schools. The UND predicament is completly self-inflicted they simply want everything for themselves including the royalties associated with using the name.
The law suit brought by the Tribes and currently underway demands UND continue to use the nickname and all revenues produced from its use will go to the Tribes.
Dear Lord, We come before you and humbly ask you to grant our prayer for a veil of protection to be placed over Donald Trump. May your will be done. In Jesus name we pray. Amen

They still wear Indians shirts at Dartmouth and Warriors to Marquette. It will take a while before you see zero Sioux gear at a UND game especially when you have a name attached to a school for 80 years.
