If I'm reading the guideline properly, if their is a 4 way tie between the teams (UNH, Maine, Towson and ODU) the tiebreaker will be the Jeff Sagarin “ELO_CHESS” computation.
The first tie breaker would have been head to head if all 4 teams had all played each other, but they havent. The next step would be record vs highest ranked opponent. The only two teams all 4 have played are Richmond and Villanova, and the 4 teams all went 2-0 vs them.
Going into this week the teams were ranked as:
Maine 67.20
UNH 65.28
Towson 60.70
ODU 60.65
Maine is obviously going to drop, the question is will Towson gain enough with its win over Maine to overtake UNH who will also gain with a win over #13 James Madison. My guess is UNH will hold the advantage in the next rating release.
Yup. And the auto qualifier isn't that big of a deal since the committee doesn't have to seed the autoqualifier higher than the conference at large teams. But, I still don't like Sagarin ratings deciding the conference champion. There has to be a better tie breaker. Yeah Razor, Towson is definitely for real this year. The CS poll is probably a better option than Sagarin. I'd rather see some sort of on field criteria used. So, while I can't stand the B(C)$, maybe we can take a lesson from that. How about breaking the tie through the CS.com poll? From everything I've seen, we have enough votes here to ensure that this is the most sound poll out there.
