Listen, FCS is great. It's a good level of football, and the playoffs are really fun. However, what most diehard FCS fans fail to understand is that if a school is looking to continually grow their program, then in most cases, FBS is the ultimate goal. It's a natural progression.
If you're not moving forward, then you're standing still or falling behind. This is the exact reason why Ga Southern had fallen so far over the past decade. Our A.D. has been satisfied with us resting on the laurels of our 6 titles, and he really failed to do anything to move the program forward since Paul Johnson left. The results are obvious. App State passed us by with facilities and the on-field product, because they have an administration that "gets it". They understand the importance of setting lofty goals and taking risks, and the benefits that come with that type of leadership. Only now is Ga Southern starting to wake up from the slumber that Sam Baker put us under with his incomptence and lack of ambtion.

If you read the article I posted closely, the single most important line is the one where the writer specifically says that this project is being spearheaded by Jeff Monken and President Keel. The glaring omission there is the absence of any mention of A.D. Sam Baker. Think about that for a second. This is possibly the biggest athletic project in GSU history, and our A.D. isn't on the forefront of it?
Our A.D. is being marginalized for a reason. For one, he has proven to be the probably most divisive man to ever set foot on campus, and he may in fact actually be a hinderance at this point for raising money believe it or not. There is no middle ground among GSU fans with Sam Baker, and I would say that most think he has worn out his welcome in Statesboro. Secondly, Baker is clearly in over his head at this level, and I think Dr. Keel got that message loud and clear last year when Baker screwed up the playoff bidding and embarassed the entire University.

We now have an administration that understand the vital importance of continued growth. Based on Monken's comments, it's clear that he understands that FBS is simply the natural progression for Ga Southern as we continue to grow. Quite frankly that progression to FBS is what Coach Erk Russell originally dreamed about. We got off track over the past 10-15 years thanks to Sammy and a general complacency among our fanbase, but now we seem to have the right people in place. Look out.

Jack V. Doland was the head coach at McNeese in the early and mid 70's....he went on to be the Athletic Director, then the University President....he retired and went into Politics. Was a State Senator right before his death...

I don't see how that 50,000 square foot facility will be the best in the FCS when ASU's is only a couple of years old and 120,000 square feet, or 2.5 times larger.

He'll get to see it on Black Saturday this season, take a look (hopefully the result is better than last year's result at Paulson).

The difference is your 120,000 square foot facility is the home for all 20 of your sport programs. This 50,000 square ft.+ facility will be for football only. For example, according to ASU, your athletics training facility is 9,000 square ft. and again, it houses all 20 of your programs. The one in our new building is 12,000 sq.ft. and will be for football only.

As of now, on paper, it looks as if GSU will have the premier football operations facility in all FCS. We'll see what the actual results are when our new building is completed and opens to the public.

I've seen the artist's renderings and it's VERY impressive, but the plans haven't been finalized and won't be released until then. In May, the plans were 70% completed so it shouldn't be too much longer.

I realize the 'multi-purpose' nature of their facilities (and I hate to give an Ankle-Biter any credit) but for flat-out classy digs it's hard to top Wofford and the Richardson/Taylor buildings.

Half the Big Sky has been rumored for move-up for the last several years (i.e. BEFORE anyone was desperate enough to talk about GA Southern, which has sucked pretty much since Paul Johnson bailed for Annapolis) and turned it down as the illusion that it truly is. Out West, the only place to go is the WAC, which is the Titanic waiting to happen. The only legitimate option in the Southeast is the Sun Belt, which is one of the most spread-out leagues known to man.

We have 6 National Championship flags in Statesboro, and made it to the semifinals last year in the first year of a new staff. You have a big fat goose egg of in your entire history as a football program.
Re: the Sunbelt. The Sunbelt is less spead out than C-USA, so you may want to check your facts there, rube.
Has Sack State even ever made the playoffs? GSU would hang no less than 60 points on Sack state this year. So get a grip.

FWIW the "lull" in GSU football from 2002-2010 still produced 2 semifinal appearances and a Payton Award winner, as well as consistent annual top 10 attendance figures. There are a WHOLE lot of programs that wish that were their good times- let alone "lulls."

As for Monken's comments, if everybody reads what he said closely he stated that he wants to have the best facilities and resources in FCS and be prepared- if the situation presented itself- to move to FBS.

Baker is a moron for sure and has more or less shat on everything he has touched but he was a puppet of Bruce Grube, who was the worst thing to ever happen to athletics at GSU, and a Berkley liberal in rural SE GA which was a horrible fit for the community and the university. A lot of us feel like the university has turned a corner with Dr. Keel at the helm and that he is the right guy at the right time just as we do with Coach Monken. Good times lie ahead for GSU with Dr. Keel at the helm.
