University of Texas-San Antonio finally getting football

Post by CaseyOrourke »

Looks like University of Texas-San Antonio will soon be getting a D-1 football team

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/loca ... tball.html

Personally I find this section wishful thinking, but then this is football (Damn near a religion) in Texas.
Initially, UTSA would play in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-AA.

A school official said the Roadrunners likely would play football as an independent the first two years and then make a decision — either to remain independent, join the FCS Southland Conference or possibly declare for the Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly Division I-A.

The timing of UTSA’s first year of FBS conference participation could be as early as the 2015-16 academic year, but it would depend on the timing of an invitation. Possible FBS conference destinations would be Conference USA, the Sun Belt or the Western Athletic Conference.

Would be a stretch to get to FBS so quickly, with no conference lined up.

Hey that's good news tor the UTSA school. Hope it works out for them and they go into the Southland. They should have a great recruiting area there.

On another note...it's even better news to see you posting over here CO.

If they are trying to go to FBS, why would the Southland let them play conference FB?

And agreed, great to see CO here.

I doubt they would but if a feasibility study shows it's not after a couple of years as an indy then it would be a good fit but if that's their intent then that will always be on the table for them.

Interesting situation. UTSA as well as the surrounding community has invested heavily in long term expansion...it's a great traveler's destination, and as such, the normal petition process may receive some expedition...just shooting from the hip, not studying the projections, I would have to believe they could put together the numbers to go FBS within 6 years.

...and I'll bet Baylor, Rice, UH, UNT, TCU, and SMU are overjoyed with this...

It'll be interesting to see the SLCs reaction. As TT pointed out a million times on another board the SLC does not want to be used as a stepping stone for the FBS. He thinks Texas St can get kicked out of the conference for stating they wish to move. Maybe UTSA won't get to play in the SLC. My guess is they will though.

The latest info... http://www.utsa.edu/today/2008/12/football.cfm
I think the SLC will insist that UTSA signs an agreement that they will commit to being part of the conference for at least ten years before any moves can even be made. Even if they did make the move to the FBS, what conference would even accept them. The Big 12 wouldn't accept them, maybe C-USA, MWC or the Sun-Belt might take them in. Like I said before A Texas college needs to be good enough to win all their games and still be a sacrificial lamb to UT so they can pad their schedule in their quest for the "FICTIONAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP."
