So between losing a first-rate FCS defensive lineman like Fletcher, losing a linebacker and safety who are likely to be NFL starters at least at some point in their careers, and switching to a *snicker* 3-4 defense, how do App. fans feel about this year's defense? :)

Why does the 3-4 defense warrant a snicker?

It's wait-and-see for me on the defense. We have a lot of beef and a lot of talent without experience. They can be good... and, we definitely have the size. Our D-line will be the biggest it's been since I've been following Appalachian. 4 guys 300+. And, I feel good about our safeties and linebackers. If our big, inexperienced guys up front play well... we could be a damn good defense.

Also, very cool that we had more players drafted than 38 of the 66 schools in BCS conferences. More than Oregon who played in the FBS national title game this year and Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UCLA and Virginia Tech, etc.

We'll have to wait and see how the defense performs. I though the D would be "hell on wheels" each of the last 2 seasons, yet with a lot of individual talent it was rather average overall. As has been stated, this year we probably have the biggest, fastest players we have ever had but lots of inexperence and a new 3-4. Would love to see a return to the toughness and agression of the 2005 unit and one that can really get after the QB. :coffee:

Here's wishing the best to Legree, Kilgore, Smith and all the FCS guys that got drafted.

DJ Smith won't start in the NFL. LeGree might and there is a chance Kilgore becomes one in a couple years but I just don't see DJ starting. He misses too many tackles. If he ever does, he will be replaced quickly. He doesn't have the skills of Coakley to last a long time in this league. I hate to say it but it's the truth. DJ is good though and could play special teams for a while and maybe become a situational ILB brought in to stop the run because that is a strength.

It confirms to me that ASU's coaching is not as good as your fans think. It's interesting to me that ASU has more NFL talent than the SEC East Champs but we know would not play within 20 or 30 points of them. I also think ASU could do some damage with 22 more scholarships and we will get to see that in a couple years I believe.

Even more than the draft picks I don't see how a potential top 50 pick in Brian Quick only had 47 catches last year but that is an argument for another day and time.

I hope their coaches took the wake up call against Villanova seriously and come out here in 2011 and get this team running on all cylinders. ASU could be very good and has no reason not to be a top 3-5 team, again.

Our coaching staff was great... we've had a ton of turnover though. We've lost defensive coordinator, offensive line coach, QB coach... de facto offensive coordinator, wide receiver coach, secondary coach. Only consistent coaches from our national championship run are our running back coach, linebacker coach and defensive end coach. Offensive coordinator was in his second year. Defensive coordinator in first year. Just inexperience. They're good coaches.

And we've had good coaches considering they're at places like West Virginia, South Carolina, East Carolina now. At our level... you have good coaches if they're leaving, unfortunately. If Brad Glenn continues to have success, he'll get plucked up by a bigger school. It's just the way it is.

Also, how bummed were you that DJ Smith got drafted? You were always really down on him. Ready to post your evidence of his Wonderlic score you claimed he got?

And, Florida wasn't the SEC East champs, fyi.

You're right. I should have separated those out and said "as many as." My deepest and sincerest apologies.

How about this:
App State had more players drafted than the entire Colonial Athletic Association. :thumb:

ASU's coaching staff was good but as you said turnover killed them. You weren't well coached the last two years though. I think ASU played to their talent or just under it but did not overachieve like GSU, Wofford, etc. ASU really played down to their talent when you look at them on paper and consider they should have won the league outright and gone much farther in the playoffs.

Mark my words on this one. McClain is a better OL coach than Elliott. He is a better technician and will get more out of his players. He has two on his roster now that have a shot to play in the NFL one day and I believe will possibly be able to say he put 3 in the NFL whereas Elliott never put one in the NFL. The only one he put in was Brown and Brown got hurt and never made it. And to be honest Brown was a stud when he first showed up. Believe it or not but the lack of coaching kept him from becoming as good as he could have been, and he was good.

Why would I be bummed? I love when an FCS player is drafted, it looks good for the division. As I said LeGree would be drafted first and then Kilgore. Both will make their rosters I think. DJ did indeed score low on his wonderlic and I don't think he will make the roster in GB. He should have been taken in the 7th round but I'm happy when these guys get drawn up the board. I don't think he is a NFL player and I believe you will see him cut but I hope I'm wrong.

I can see how you would assume I said they are the champs but I did not say that. Was just pointing out that you couldn't beat the champs because we know you wouldn't have beat South Carolina. I do think ASU can one day when they move up and I believe they will.

You said he scored a 9 on his wonderlic. That's not just low... that's functionally retarded. A Wonderlic score of 9 is appoximately equivalent to an IQ of 78. Forrest Gump's IQ was 76.

Profootballweekly.com has his wonderlic score at 20. Which is certainly nothing to brag about... but, it's about average for an NFL player and slightly above average for an NFL linebacker.

You claimed he scored less than half as high. Always been curious where you got that number and whether you would ever post evidence for it.

He scored a 9 on is at his junior pro day for Carolina and Jacksonville. He did indeed score a 20 at the NFL Scouting Combine. Most players scored better at the NFL Scouting Combine. For example, LeGree scored a 20 at his junior pro day but scored a 24 at the NFL Scouting Combine. I'm glad DJ scored better but to be honest a 20 is not great for a MLB. It's okay but not ideal for someone calling the defense.

Regardless, he could make their practice squad but I just don't see him as a stud or long term starter in the NFL. He was ASU's third best prospect this year, shown on draft day, despite their SID hyping him as #1 before and during the season. The coaches also hyped Smith the most as well but did change their minds and hyped Kilgore as their best guy during the fall.

You really need to pat McClain on the back for the improvements he made with Kilgore in such a short amount of time.

Why the disparity? Going from 9 to 20 is going from functionally retarded to average.

I called bullshit on you when you first posted he scored a 9. Turns out he did over twice as well. So, you should provide some evidence to backup your 9 claim... or I'm just going to have to assume you either misread a 19 score... or you just made it up. No reason not to post some evidence since his score is public now.

It's really not a big disparity. There is nothing on the internet to prove it. I have access to the scores from last spring and he went from a 9 to a 20. LeGree from a 20 to 24. The information from the spring is not allowed to be posted on the internet so I can't post it. Why would I make that up?

And for the record 9 is not retarded. Retarded would be a 2 or 3.

9 is the equivalent of a 78 IQ. That's a functional retard IQ level. Like Forrest Gump. I don't think DJ Smith would graduate on the Dean's List (GPA 3.45+) with a degree in a fairly difficult major as a functional retard. Though, if true, it would certainly make for an excellent biopic.

I am saying I can't post the file with all of them on there. I just pointed out that he scored that. And good luck to him with that lawsuit because I didn't do anything to try and push him down draft boards. NFL teams had the results because I got them from him. They pointed his score out to me. And you should call up Peterson from LSU, Green from Georgia, and others and show them PFW so they can sue too lol. They aren't suppose to hit the internet but they do. I'm just saying I won't post a full list of them because I have no reason to. I only point them out when there is a great score or really bad score.

And look at the GPA of a lot of SEC football players who score below a 10 on the wonderlic. I'm sure A.J. Green and Patrick Peterson have a 2.5 or 3.0 GPA but yet scored low. Just because you have a 9 doesnt mean you will have a 78 IQ. Those are just translation charts but yet they don't always match up.
