Stetson, who provided considerable funding to what started out as DeLand Academy and then DeLand University, made his fortune selling hats. The university was affiliated with the Florida Baptist Convention until the 1990s (and thus hardly likely to fit the stereotypical slander of one poster here).

So the two main benefactors of the university were DeLand, who made his fortune selling baking soda and then lost it trying to raise oranges in Florida, and Stetson--son of a hatter--who took up his father's craft and invented the cowboy hat.
