(Grand Forks Hearld). UND sophomore forward Danny Kristo says he’s feeling a lot better in the early stages of recovery from frostbite suffered Sunday evening.
“I’m doing fine, I’m planning on recovering as safely and as quickly as possible,” Kristo said. “I’m just enjoying the unlimted popsicles you get here! And, I get to pee right here in my bed."
“I definitely feel dumb. I want to say thanks to the fans and friends and family members who have covered this up for me.”
Kristo’s father, Mark, added: “Our family wants to express our sincere gratitude for all of the thoughts and prayers from his friends, supporters and the Sioux family during these past few days. If not for the cover-up, Danny would likely be suspended from the team, and possibly face more legal charges related to the deferred sentence imposed just 3 short months ago.”
Kristo is expected to remain at his parents’ home in Eden Prairie, Minn., after being discharged from Regions Hospital for continued treatment before returning to Grand Forks.
There is still no timetable set for his possible return to playing hockey; however, a welcome home party is planned at Judy's on Super Bowl Sunday, with an open bar from 4:00 p.m. - 2:30 a.m.
UND said that Kristo sustained frostbite on the toes of his right foot while walking near campus trying to save puppies and kitties from the severe cold on Sunday evening, as part of his Kristo Kares Program. On that night, temperatures dipped to -11 and -33 wind chill. Frostbite can occur in just over 10 minutes at those temperatures.
